Biography Email from jbatchelder@operamail.com:
Henry Smith was born around 1802 in France. He came over to America and married Mary (Polly) Kimmel who resided in Stony Creek, PA. She was wed previously to Peter Pyle who died a few years before she married Henry. Henry and Mary had three boys: George (b.1840), Samuel (b. 1842) and James (b.1845). Only a few months after the birth of James, Mary died. Unable to raise a baby and 2 little boys, Henry sent James and Samuel to good friends Mr. & Mrs. Michael Putman to live till they were 18 years of age. At that point they got a homemade suit of clothes, a few carpenter tools and a little money and sent on his way. In March 1864, Samuel came to Waterloo and settled in with brother George (raised by father) for next 2 years in Orange Township. -Decided to stay a while and purchased 160 acres of land June 1868. -1868 Returned to Pennsylvania -February 1869 married Lydia Casebeer -Spring of 1869 they came back to Waterloo and made home with Daniel Miller family on Ridgeway Avenue (across from Schoitz Hospital). -1901 Built brick home for their new family. -Built many large barns and houses. Built 10 school houses in Orange Township and Byrnes Park Club House. -Buried July 1920 at Orange Cemetery with wife Lydia.1
