Death* | 19 Sep 2000 | Renton, King Co., Washington; cause of death: breast cancer Memorial listed in Find-A-Grave by "Barb W.": Debbie was born September 12, 1952 in Tacoma, Washington to Eunice Olson and Harold Maher, the third of four children. She attended Campbell Hill Elementary, Dimmitt Jr. High, and Renton High School. She was a Girl Scout, studied dance, was a gymnast, sang in school choirs, and was a member of her church's youth program. Always energetic and adventurous, she liked to master new skills and had an extraordinary sense of comedy and humor. During Debbie's junior year in high school, her mother passed away after years of battling breast cancer. Six months later, her father passed away. At the beginning of her senior year, Debbie married and moved to Bellingham, Washington where she and her husband continued their schooling. Debbie loved and had a great talent for sewing and creating, and wanted to be an interior designer. Sometime in the 1980s Debbie and her husband divorced. She moved back to the Seattle area and worked as a lay-up machinist at Boeing. She later was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like her mother, Debbie fought the cancer for several years before it claimed her in September 2000, one week after her 48th birthday. Obituary in the South County Journa (Kent, Wa) - Saturday, September 23, 2000: Lifelong Renton resident Deborah Rae Maher died of metastatic breast cancer Sept. 19, 2000, in Renton. She was 48. Joseph Bates1
M, b. 19 April 1905, d. 26 December 1996
Biography* | Marjorie K. "Dainard" McArthur writes: Joe Bates and my mom Margaret Katherine (Nitsche) Dainard were married in May 1959. They had know each other as smaller children but married others. Due to the matchmaking efforts of my Aunt Marie Tropple they were later reunited after both their spouses had passed on. They had about sixteen fun and loving years together before she died in 1974 after being taken care of by him thoughout her complete illness. We remained very close and between his banjo playing and his stories of early Seattle history we spent many evenings enjoying ourselves. Even until he was approximately 90 years of age he played as Ragtime Joe with the banjo players in Omak, Washington known as "The Buttercup Gang". His music will ring on with us for years. He was a supportive and lifelong member of the NRA, the Constitution of the United States, and was forever "young". He was really an artist. There was nothing he could not fix, he had been a shoe maker, a gunsmith, machinist, a boat builder, a boilermaker and in his younger years had been a trapper and retained his love for hunting and fishing. When he turned 91 we asked him what he wanted to do for his birthday. The answer was to go fishing so away we went. He was an independant person, living on his own until shortly before he passed on. He was laid to rest next to his beloved Margaret in the cemetery at Fall City, Washington . At the time of his death he had about 29 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.2
Biography | Richard Bates writes: Here’s a little of what I’ve heard about my father, Joseph Bates. He was a boxer who fought once for the championship of his weight division and lost. The fight was supposed to be in Ireland. During Prohibition, he ran alcohol down from Canada. He drove somebody else’s Chriscraft runabout. He supposedly also drove a big car for somebody. This might actually be true if he was indeed a boxer. Boxing at that time was terribly corrupted and he would have had to be on someone’s payroll. At some point he became a cobble and specialized in hobnail boots for loggers. This one is true, I’ve seen his work. He also learned how to make rifles, stocks and micro grooved barrels. His rifle stocks were beautiful! He made match weapons rather than hunting rifles. He was proud that both the women’s and men’s champion won using his rifle. I don’t know if this is true nor what time period this covered. I have seen several of the rifles and was amazed at the artistry, gorgeous. After WWII I guess he worked at a factory that made aluminum tube chairs. When he worked for himself he made rifles and boots. Joe married twice after divorcing. He had a daughter by the second marriage, but no children by the third. Later in life Joe came to my house just once. We went to his place only two or three times a year. He had a son, Buster, by his second wife. Buster is a successful plumbing contractor. I never did know him3
