Note*10 Apr 1933 From Wm. R. Mealey, Foster, Linn County, Oregon to a cousin Samuel A. Mealey, Gridley, Cal. April 10, 1933

A few days since I received your letter with a record of the Mealey family, both of which I was very glad to get I have copied the record and am returning it to you. I wish to thank you for kindly sending it to me. The fact is I have learned more from you and through you of our ancestors than from any other source.

I am expecting to write to our relations at Condon right soon and learn what I can from them, also expect to endeavor to locate some our tribe in the eastern states and find out what is to be learned from them. What ever I find I will transmit to you. One thing is certain, and that is our people have been identified with this nation ever since and even before it was founded, and they are people one may be proud of.

I recall Sam Mealey very well. When I was just a small boy, he with his family, several boys as I recall now, stopped at our place on his way to Prairie City. Blain was one of those boys. I remember father speaking often of Dr. Mealey, who came to the state and settled on the Muddy, at Oakville, not very far from Albany. He bore a very fine name and was a strict Presbyterian by faith and founded a church which was the first in the state. The Smith, McCoys and Farrars are in some way related to our tribe also, though I think the Farrars only indirectly. But I can learn all this easily and maybe find out something about the Doctor's descent-also about Washington.

A good many years ago I met a Junkin in Albany, but at the time I was in a great hurry and did not interview him the way I should. That must have been 25 years ago and he seemed to be a man of around fifty then. He came from northeastern Oregon, some place but I forget just where now.

You say you are a son of Thomas Scott. John Harris says your grandfather was John, son of the original Laurence,; therefore your father must have been a son of John, which establishes your descent pretty clearly.

K do not recall my grandfathers name, but expect to get a lot of this stuff from Budd, who is living at Dayville. MY father lived with him in the later part of his life, so no doubt but that Budd will know a lot more about father than I do. There was no trouble in our family and father was a good and honorable, but his health was poor on the western side of the state so he found it advisable to live in a higher climate. I am explaining this so you will understand why he was almost a stranger to me after I got to be a man grown.

My father named my oldest brother Thomas Starr. Harris says that Thomas, son of Lawrence married Elizabeth Starr. This gives me to believe that father named my brother Starr after his father and mother. Do you know anything about this? At least I shall find out about it. My father Charles Mealey was born in Green County, Ohio, Aug. 29, 1831. Died at Caleb, Grant county, Dec 17, 1895. Have just looked in the old family Bible and found my mother made the entry Charles Mealey, son of Thomas. So doubtless that settles how we descended from the original Lawrence. Your grandfather, John and my grandfather, Thomas, were brothers and Lawrence was our greatgrandfather.

But it does not explain about Washington, the pioneer who came to this state in 1840, nor about Dr. Mealey of Oakville. I am inclined to believe that Sam Mealey, who went to Condon, the father of Blain was the son of Washington. Do you know any thing about this?

I am going to find out more concerning our people. Several of father's brother were in the Civil war, officers I believe. I am not sure but one of them fell in battle. One of them lost a leg. One of them captured two confederate battle flags and another brother captured one flag. As for me, I was in Alaska when the Spanish-American was was commenced and ended and was too old to join the World War. So have no military experience. Just only a ranchman, miner, and lumberman now about worn out and living on what I have made. (over)

Back page begins:

I expect to have a family group photograph made of my family some time this summer and will send you one. The girls have a lot so snaps shots around the place and when I can get some of them together I will send them to you so that you will know what kind of people you have for relations. Personally I am proud to say, and I believe I have a right to be proud to say that I have been able to live up to our honorable name, the good name my father gave me. I know you will be glad to know when I say that none in this county, where we were born and raised have a more honorable name, and it has always been my ambition that my sons continue so to live that our name shall always be honored. I am telling you this, not in the way of boasting but rather that you may know that you people our race is one that no one needs to be ashamed of.

I would like to know more about you. What is your age and do you have a family? Doubtless you are or have been married and probably have a family. If so, of what do they consist, how many sons and daughters, their ages and names. The wife's name before you were married? Where and when you both were born, in fact all about you. I would like to know it all so I can compile it all for future generations of our people. This I expect to do with all the other Mealeys I can get in touch with. I suspicion that when I get lined out right I will learn a lot of interesting things about our family.

I hope financial conditions will improve before long and that you will be able to come through with your big orchard. While I, like most of our people, am and have been a republican, still, as a good American should, I am upholding the hand of our present president and hope he will be able to bring succor to our hard-pressed people.

I note you take The Oregonian, our state paper. Maybe you sometime see the name of Settlemeir. Well my mother was a Settlemeir and all of them are more or less related the same as the Mealeys. There are a lot of them too. My grandfather and great uncle George were brothers, the same as your grandfather Mealey and my grandfather Mealey were brothers, so I have a large relationship scattered all over the United States.

Hoping to hear from you soon and that you are standing the strain.
I am always, Your cousin (Singned) Wm. R. Mealey
