PIONEER MILLER DROPS DEAD IN HOME
RICHARD COCHRAN, 83, EXPIRES SUDDENLY IN HIS DAUGHTER'S HOUSE

RAN EARLY DAY MILL

Richard Cochran, 83, pioneer and for sixty years a resident of this city, died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M.E. Dixon, 250 West Washington avenue, shortly after 12:30 o'clock Monday afternoon.

Death was pronouced due to old age and general decline. Coroner Cutler was called to take charge of his body.

The deceased at one time was a miller in the J.C. Hubffmayer mills which were destroyed some years ago and the Auditorium built on the site. He was engaged in this occupation for fourty-four years working first as a sack filler and later came to own the business.

Travelling on foot practically all the way from his birthplace in Connersville, Ind., behind the prarie schooner which his pioneer parents had purchased for the trip to the west, Richard Cochran arrived in Council Bluffs in the year 1862.

Four years later he married Sarah Watson, daughter of a well known Council Bluffs family. The wife died fifteen years ago.

Retired When Mill Sold.

The miller, retired from active business life when his mill wa sold and the Auditorium built. As he grew older his daily exercies would take him to the home house of headquarters company of the fire department where he would sit and rest, spinning yarns of the early pioneer days and Indian uprisings to interested friends.

Death came suddenly after a week of sickness. The aged man had just gotten up from his bed and requested his daughter, who was nursing him, to allow him to have his clothes. He immediately weakened and was carried back to bed where he died after a few minutes.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Scott C. Johnson, two sons, J.N. and W.T. Cochran, one brother, C.O. Cochran all of this city and one sister, Mrs. Mary S. Howley of Seattle, Wash.

Funeral announcement will be made later.

I first met him [Harrison Elliott] him while he was visiting his brother, Wm Elliott, now dead. I met Harrison Elliott then in the week several times. I next saw him at his brother's funeral. From April 1891 till July 1891, my mother, Jane Wise, Lincoln, Nebr. Elliott was also living the same same house during that time.; housemate=Florence E. Halterman
(housemate) ResidenceJul 1891 Quincy, Illinois; Deposition of Florence E. Elliott on 7 April 1899:

In July 1891, Thomas Elliott, now dead, Harrison Elliott and his son Harry, and my mother and sister and myself all went to Quincy, Ill. Rebecca r. Elliott was at Fremont Nebraska. Harrison Elliott had started west somewhere, but I do not know where and when the rest of the party got to Council Bluffs, Iowas, Thomas Elliott got a telegram from Harrison Elliott that he would go to Quincy with us. At Quincy, Harrison went into the barter business. He boardd with my mother, my sister, and he. He boarded with us all the time going on two years. His wife was supposed to be at Fremont, Nebr. during that time. I did not know where she was. When he left Quincy, he want to Keoukuk, Iowa. The said persons went to Keokuk except his sone Harry was not along but his dauthter, Luella Marcells , was with us.; Principal=Florence E. Halterman10
(housemate) Residenceb Aug 1891 Keokuk, Iowa; Deposition of Florence E. Elliott on 7 April 1899:

When we left quincy he [Harrison Elliott] went to Keokuk, Iowa. the same persons went to Keokuk except his son Harry was not along, but his daughter, Luella Marcells, was with us. We were at Keokuk about a year I guess. Maybe longer.; Principal=Florence E. Halterman10
ResidenceAug 1895 Perry, Dallas Co., Iowa; Florence Elliott says that her sister Lida was living in Perry, Iowa at the time that Harrison Elliott was in jail.11
(Witness) Divorce15 Oct 1895 Lancaster Co., Nebraska; This divorce was not recognized by the pension bureau because they ruled that it was fraudulently granted because Rebecca Elliott did not receive notice of the divorce, although both spouses appeared to know where the other resided.

Report of J.H. Hines relating to the widow's pension applications for the pension of Harrison Elliott: The sole witness to this divorce [the divorce of Harrison and Rebecca Elliott] was Latta Cochran, evidently meant for Lida Cochran, the sister of Florence. Lida Cochran is now dead.

From Florence [Halterman] Elliott testimony: Well, he [Harrison] said they [Harrison and Rebecca] couldn't get along, that she was always cruel to him or something like that. When he got his divorce in Lincoln, my sister, Lida L. Cochran, was a witness for him. My sister knew him the same length of time I did. I believe that she was the only witness he had. I don't know that she knew at that time where Rebecca was. She knew about his being in jail at Omaha and that Rebecca visited him there. She knew only what I had written to her. She was at Perry, Iowa while he was in jail. She came here the last of Aug. or the first of Sept 1895, and she was here till the latter part of Oct. 1894. She was here on a visit, and never lived here. No, she was not brought here as a witness on this case. It just happened that she came on a visit at that time.; Principal=Harrison Elliott, Principal=Rebecca R. Riblett12
