Note | 13 Jun 1912 | Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois; Deposition of Sarah J. Martin made on 13 June 1912 at Chicago, Illinois: I am 71 years of age. My post-office address is 4213 W Harrison St, Chicago, Ill. I am the widow of Silas L. Martin, who was a pensioner and who died in Spokane, Washington January last. I was paid 1/2 of his pension for a number of years to his death. My maiden name was Sarah J. Bingham. My first and only marriage was to Silas L. Martin, Nov 27 - 1863. He was serving in the Army at this time in Co H, 17 Ind Vols Infy., and he came home on furlough a we were married in the country, 5 or 6 miles from Princeton, Ind. where my mother lived. After his discharge from service he [?] to me at Princeton & we lived together 3 or 4 years, when he deserted me. He left home one morning & said he was going off to work & he never showed up after that. I most forgot the year he left me, but I know it was before the Chicago fire, I did not see him again until about 26 years ago he came to Princeton Ind where I was living to attend a Soldiers [Excursion?], a he came to our house to see me a was there a couple of hours. He made no explanation as to why he left me, but said he was living in Kansas. He did not at any time inform me that he had secured a divorce from me. After he left me I first heard of him at Fairfield, Ill. He had been there a number of years a just accidentally heard he was there. I did not write to him but about over 5 years I would write to the pension office to find if he was still living & where he was at but never attempted to follow him up. I did not know of his death until informed of the fact by the pension agent. Once while he was living at Mena Ark. I worte to him asking if he could not send me a part of his pension & he replied saying he did not want me to write him, that he had a wife & I might make him trouble, but if I did write to address him as Bill Smith. I had four children. The oldest chld was born out of wedlock. I had it when I married him a he knew all about its [?]. She died after he left me, aged 14. Her name was Martha & she was known as Marthy Martin. The 2nd child was named Geo H. & he died in 1899 and I am now living with his widow. The 3rd child was James L. who now lives in Hammond Ind. No 8 151 St. He is a Bill [?]. My 4th child was Carrie. She died about 17 year ago here in Chicago. After my husband left me, I kept my children together, made a home for them at Princeton, [?] and lived there with them up to 20 years ago. When I moved to Chicago and have been here ever since. I never applied for or secured a divorce from my husband, a I never at any time lived with any other man. I never learned from any source that he secured a divorce from me.4 |

Note* | 26 Mar 1895 | Deposition of Mrs. R.J. Martin on 26 March 1895: I am 53 years old my next birthday. I reside in Marceline Mo. and am the wife of Silas L. Martin. I was married to Silas L. Martin in Feby 1869. I have no record of my marriage, no certificate or any evidence of the date. I was married in Sullivan, Moultire Co., Illinois. I have never separated from Mr. Martin and have lived with him continuously since my marriage. I knew he had been married before I married him but I did not know his wife's name, and did not know where he lived with her. I did not know whether he ever got a divorce from her, but supposed he had. For two years or so after my marriage I lived near the place I was married, and I lived also in Fairfield Ills. I do not know the year but my daughter now in her twelfth year was a very small girl then. I do not think I lived in Fairfield three years, but while I lived there I did not know any woman named Sarah or Samantha Halterman, or Bonner or Martin. I never heard of his having been married to her, and there was nothing about his conduct while we lived at Fairfield to make me suspicious. I had not known my husband more than a year before I married him and I did not know him in 1864. I never lived in Clay County, Illinois as far as I can remember. I have no interest in the claim. Questions understood and answers correctly recorded. R.J. Martin. |
