  2. [S29] Katherine G. In his will, William Henderson stated that he wanted his son James and his brother, Samuel Henderson, to be his executors. This shows that William Henderson Sr. was married twice. William Henderson was a son by a first marriage, with John, James and Samuel, sons by his marriage to Margaret Bruce. The signature of the Samuel Henderson on both documents are the same man.

Biography* The evidence that Susanna (Anna)'s surname at birth was "Logan" is hardly abundant. Apparently it is reported in the "Virginia Historical Magazine" (vol/yr unk, p93, probably xxxvi (31 Dec 1928) which says that William Henderson (1699-1770) married Susannah Logan.

Reference is also made obliquely by a later researcher named Grace Bell Gaw who mentions that Anna Logan was the grandmother of Susanna Henderson and her brother William.

In the 1900 census, the ages and birthdates given for all of the members in this family are quite different than corresponding ages given in other census year. I have reported them here as given, but they are clearly not accurate (sometimes off by as much as 10 years). All names and birth places do, however, match with precision.5

Biography* David H. Jones, great-grandson of Lucy Henderson Eckess through her daughter Mollie, related the following story:

Lucy and her husband (Jacob C. Eckess) did indeed move to Florida, where she died January 16, 1913. How did they end up in Florida you might ask... well, that is a story in itself.

Jacob had served in the 10th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was quite upset when the U.S. Supreme court decided about 1907 that West Virginia owed the State of Virginia a debt over three million dollars, with interest, totalling more than fifteen million dollars (a huge sum in those days). Great Grandfather Eckess was indignant as he had fought the rebels and won. Rather than be taxed to pay this debt to his late adversaries, he sold all of their property (including two farms) and moved to Florida which was, at that time, a rugged new frontier. Jacob and Lucy were both over 65 and it was a formidable undertaking. They settled at Dinsmore, about ten miles above Jacksonville.

Obituary (clipping, source not legible)

PAIGE FRANKLIN HENDERSON

The subject of this sketch was born at French Creek, W. Va., Febraury 7, 1849 and departed this life at Volga, July 13, 1918.

Between these dates was lived the life of a man whose history it would take columns to relat. In fact it is impossible towrite the real life of any human being. There are subtle qualities which enter into personality and character that defy language. And yet it is these elusive elements which endear to us our loved ones, and live longest in memory.

His grand father, Andrew H. Henderson [someone wrote in "David" here] came from Scotland to Virginia when a young man. There he was united in marriage to Miss Paige, a number of one of the prominent families of the Old Dominion.

His father and mother, William and Elizabeth, came from Augusta County to the place of his birth in their early life. Her he began the jouney of the years, and near this place he at last found rest, and sleeps not [illegible] in an honored grave.

He was married to Luella Virginia Adams, December 13, 1874. Of the five children born to them, three are living. Justin, who is with the army of the United States, Miss Katerine, and Louis, a prosperous business man of Doddridge County.

Converted at the age of 24, he united with the M.E. church, South, of which he remained a consistent member to the end of his life. At the time of his death he was a member of the Clarksburg church.

Beginning life as a farmer, he later entered the merchantile business and a wholesaler and retailer accumulaterd a considerable competency, which no dubt have become much larger but for the failure of his health which copelled him to retire at the early age of 39, from the active conduct of his business.

During the remaining years he fought a valliant warfare against disease, traveling and living in Kansas, California, and Canada in search of health. His suffering was long and severe. His face was marked with the ravages of pain. Yet he bravely bore his affliction and perhaps added years to his life by his fortitude and ambitious effort.

In his religious life Brother Henderson was unassuming and quiet. He made little demonstation. But his faith was deep founded , his investigation was far reaching and at the end his testimony was clear. Among the last words heard from his lips were lines of the hymn "The Lilly of the Valley."

As a citizzen (sic) Mr. Henderson was respected and trusted. His superior ability enabled him to be of grat assistance to others, and many a man will have cause to remember him for the help given in establishing himself.

As a husband and father he was faithful and sincere. The testimony of his children is a rich heritage. Back of the seeming irratibility resulting from years of suffering was the heart of a man who lived his own, and that heart was reconginzed by those who loved him most.

Without seeming to digress I feel like adding a line to preserve the record of the unceasing and tireless devotion of his daughter, who gave every moment of her time, and every atom of her strength to ministration of tenderness and love, and considered no sacrifice to grat if it could bring help or comfort to the weary suffering father. The memory of such devotion will be her full reward through life. His sons also were always solicitious and helpful. In fact he was blessed in the many relations [illegible] know Brother Henderson was to have come in contact with no ordinary man. There was a dignity and force of character which made a deep impression on those who had the fortune to know him well. In his neighborhood he was a leader. In his thinking he was a pathfinder. In his conversation he was a teacher. In his meditations on Divine things he roamed the immeasurable reaches of the olden time believers. And in his death he proved the power of God to save, as in his life he knew Him as the comforter of the suffering.

Much might be written. But nothing could add to this record. Those who knew him will not forget him. And for having known him they will be richer in every profitable experience.

Peace to his ashes. Blessings on his children, and the sister, who is Mrs. G.W. Smith of Buckhannon. A multitude of friends gathered to honor him when he passed away. May we not believe that legions of angles (sic) smoothed the final patway for his weary feet as he traveled the last lonely road.

This note is written with affectionate recollections by his pastor.
