Biography* Mr. James Harper has sent with his MS the following sketch written by Sarah Harper Pollock daughter of Samuel Harper, Jr., and feeling that it will be uf interest to all the Harper and Leeper connection the editor prints it.

"I have often thought it would give me great pleasure to possess a sketch of my parents from their own hand, but as that is denied me, I think it would give my children some satisfaction to read something from my hand of their progenitors.

It is but little I know of my forefathers, as my parents died when I was a child, but I know that they were among the number that embraced the doctrines of the Reformation in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries; and were often persecuted for righteousness sake, being obliged to flee from one country to another for safety.

At length in the early part of the seventeenth century my grandparents emigrated to America -my father's family from Scotland and my mother's from N. Ireland. Both families settled in the E. part of Pa. My father's father died when father was nineteen. My honored grandsire had been a Ruling Elder in the Associate Presbyterian Church for many years and was eminent for his piety and brought up his children in the fear of the Lord. He had two sons and two daughters. My father's eldest sister married a Mr. Mealy and sometime in 1796 emigrated to Ohio and settled near Mariatta. Her husband died when her children were small, but by Divine assistance she brought her children up in that new and then unsettled part of the country, to be models in piety and usefulness, and their descendants to the third and fourth generation are numbered with the followers of Christ.

My father's second sister married a Mr. Moore, they had two children who subsequently removed to W. Pa. and married brothers by the name of Moore. One of them is living yet in the neighborhood of Jefferson College "(Cannonsburgh,Pa.)" and has a fine family; the other sister died many years ago. My father was one of a number of young men that formed a weekly prayer meeting while he was yet in his "teens," and at the death of his father was installed into the office of Ruling Elder in which office he served until the day of his death. After my grandfather's death, my father removed from York Co., Pa. to Beaver Co., Pa., and purchased a home in a beautiful spot called Travis Valley, romantic beyond description. There I spent the fleeting years of childhood, nurtured under the care of the best of parents. There were ten of us to surround our father's board, five boys and five girls. Both parents and six of their children are laid to rest until the Ressurection. God grant that we may all be in number of those that have part in the first ressurection. It was in the Spring of 1814 that my father bid adieu to all earthly things, and nine days later my dear mother was laid beside him. I was then thirteen years and six months old. I had one brother younger than myself who died when he was twenty-nine years of age, in the hope of a happy ressurection. Two sisters still live in Pa., and one in Ill. and myself in Ohio, where I hope to finish my days on earth."

The above was written in 1860.
