Biography* From posting by Donna Kalbereron Find-A-Grave website:

Jacob Schirck was born in Switzerland. When he was a child his parents moved to the town of Muterscholtz, Alsace, France. Here he learned the trade of nail smith. When he was eighteen years of age he entered the Army, where he served under Napoleon Bonaparte. While in service, which lasted twenty years, he traveled through Spain, Italy and Austria. The Army crossed the Alps and during the march it was so extremely cold that many of the soldiers starved and froze to death. The provisions became so low they were compelled to kill their mules for food and they used gun powder for salt.

While in Poland he was wounded, having a saber run through his shoulder and was taken prisoner, robbed of all he possessed- all the money he had saved for ten years and a valuable gold watch which had been a gift from a noted general under whom he had served as chef for many years. The loss of the watch, he would greatly lament, for he prized it very highly and never could it be replaced.

While on their way to Moscow he was released as prisoner, then for some time he served as cook and nursed in hospitals along the march. His military service now came to a close, he returned to the town of Muterscholtz where he met and courted Margaret Giesselbrecht.2

Biography* From posting by Donna Kalbereron Find-A-Grave website:

Margaret, wife of Jacob Schirck was born in Muterscholtz, France. She met Jacob when he returned from the war. In her later years, when talking to her grandchildren of her younger years, she often said that she did not care so very much for the old bachelor when he first began to call and show her attention ( he was 16 years older and she was very shy). As was customary in those days the young maidens were taught the art of spinning, so when Jacob called to see her and spend the evenings, she always busied herself with the spinning and would spin faster and accomplish more. He continued to seek her company and was eventually united in marriage in December 1815.

Seven children blessed this union, five were born in Alsace, France, namely; Jacob Jr., Margaret, Michael, Magdalena and Casper. the last named having died in France at the age of five years--- Mary and Barbara were born in this country. Mary died at the age of twelve years and Barbara died in infancy.

The family came to America in the spring of 1834. After spending six weeks on the ocean in a sailing vessel , they landed in New York, then by way of the Hudson River and the Erie Canal, they arrived in Buffalo. They were met in Buffalo by an old friend, Mr. Fritch and with oxen team they traveled to Warren, Pa.

Jacob purchased a farm and built a log house and for three months they walked back and forth to clear and plant the land.

They prospered and lived happily all their years on Yankee Bush, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in a quiet way shortly before Jacob's death.1
