(Cyrus Wade Roberts)

This article was published in the Noblesville Daily Ledger, Thursday, July 2, 1925 and transcribed from a microfilm copy by Lezli Davis on June 11, 2014. Cyrus Wade Roberts passed away on November 24, 1926. His wife, Katherine, died in 1841 and both are buried in the Roberts Settlement Cemetery.

For a long time I have had it in my heart to write a little history of my life and work if thereby I might interest and stimulate some one in their efforts and desires for a successful life career, as well as a reference for others after I am gone.

I was born of humble parentage in Jackson Township, Hamilton county; State of Indiana on the first day of September in the year of our Lord, 1848.

My father’s name was Wade Roberts, son of Hansel and Priscilla Roberts, and my mother’s name was Mary Jane Roberts, daughter of Elijah and Kiziah Roberts. My parents moved to this state (Indiana) from North Carolina, with their parents in 1835, being then children of 12 years of age. First settling in Rush county for a year, then moving to Hamilton county, with others, where a large community of colored people grew up to be known in after years as the Roberts Settlement. I was taught to work on the farm, to help clear the ground when I was but a small boy for the country was then new and everybody had to work. My parents could read and write and they taught us from the Bible. There were eight children of us and we all had to kneel down around the family altar each morning for prayer, for my parents were very devout, and if we made any noise or acted rude in any way we were immediately spanked.

Aside from this my educational advantages, at that early date, were very limited.

We attended what was called in that day a “Subscription School” the tuition being usually from $1.00 to $1.50 per month, being taught in the little log cabin (the first built in the community for both church and school purposes), and the mode of punishment for disobedience was the big hickory switch well seasoned, for there were plenty of them in that day, and some times by plying the palm of the hand with a piece of scaly bark pulled from a hickory tree. Wasn’t that awful? But our teachers then, I presume, didn’t know any better. Our educational fire-arms consisted of Webster’s blue back speller and McGuffey’s Primer or First Reader. And we had to learn our “A B C’s” by rote, on which we were kept for weeks and months at a time or take a good flogging. Later on when the Free School System was inaugurated then our advantages were superior.

I was also trained up in the Sunday school and to attend church and I am still going. When I was 20 years of age, realizing the need of a good education, I attended Union High Seminary at Westfield. This was in 1868. Professor James Sanders was the superintendent. I don’t remember how long I attended this school but I know I made rapid advancement, had lots of friends and a good time in general. Later on in 1871 I went to Spiceland Academy, at Spiceland, Henry county, Indiana, being advised to do so by the late Rev. Jesse Hiatt, of the Wesleyan Methodist church.

From this institution I graduated in 1873. This was my educational climax, and some of the best and happiest days of my life. Here, also, I had plenty of friends, I made them, and had an all-round good time. Professor Clarkson Davis was the president of this school and he was a fine Christian gentleman as was also Professor James Sanders. Both of theses schools were under the jurisdiction of the Friend Quakers, as they were called, and we were given the privilege to hold prayer meetings and to attend religious services once each week on the campus. I professed a hope in Christ in the winter of 1868 at a meeting held in the Roberts Settlement by the late Rev. William Allen, a Quaker preacher. We had at that time a frame building, now Roberts Chapel.

As I felt an early call to the ministry much of my education was secured in preparation for this work.

My father was also a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist church and after his week’s work was done he would go on Saturday afternoons on horseback to his appointments. My father died in 1854. I noticed in a biographical clipping some years ago taken from the American Wesleyan and written by the late Jabez Neal, one of the early pioneers in this section of the country, a staunch anti-slavery advocate, and a gospel preacher of no mean ability; eagleeyed, with a gaze that was piercing; who, with clenched fists, grating teeth and a stamp of the foot sent truth home to the hearts of his hearers like “goads driven in a sure place by the master of assemblies.”

I was then about five years old. I remember that Rev. “Jabe Neal,” as he was familiarly called, preached my father’s funeral, as he did the funerals of nearly all of the colored people of Roberts Settlement who died in his day.

A funeral in that day might be preached in six months, or a year, or two years after demise. It was the custom in that day for the family to invite the near relatives and friends of the deceased with the officiating minister, home for dinner as the funeral was usually held on Sunday. I remember that about 45 ate dinner at our house on that occasion.

No such hospitality is extended in these days, not even to the preacher. But to go on, I was ordained an elder in the Wesleyan Methodist church at Fairmount, Ind., in 1874, during the annual conference of that church (as I was at that time a member of that church), and the late Rev. Aaron Worth laid his hands on my head, with others, in ordaining. I received my first appointment, at the suggestion of the late Rev. Jesse Hiatt, to Pomeroy, Meigs, county, Ohio, where they wanted a young minister. Here I spent one year.

My next appointment was at Ripley, Brown county, Ohio. Here I also spent one year. I then returned to Pomeroy and took to myself, of the best they had, a wife, in the person of Miss Katherine V. Harris. We were married on the third day of September, 1876. To our union has been given five children, one of whom, Mattie Inis, the oldest, died at the age of 16 years. Those surviving are Charles H., Oliver W., and Russell H. Roberts, and Mrs. Daisy R. Coker, all of whom are now married and living in South Bend, Indiana and with whom we are now sojourning for a season.

After marrying we immediately removed to my home in Hamilton county to live with my mother who died on the 25th of July 1878. In the fall of 1880 we sold out our interest in the farm and returned to Ohio where I received a call in the spring of 1881 to take charge of the Wesleyan church in Zanesville.

In the winter or spring of 1882 we received an urgent call from the Missionary Board of the Wesleyan Methodist church at Syracuse, N.Y., to go to Tennessee, to preach to, and to teach the Freed men of the South. After much prayer and consultation with loved ones we accepted the call believing it was from the Lord. So, on the morning of April 2nd, 1882, we set sail for the “Sunny South,” arriving at our destination, Purdy, McNary county, Tennessee, after two days and nights on the way as train connections were not very good.

Here we remained for five and one-half years with varied success. While here we received a call from the Missionary Board to go as a missionary to Africa, but this we declined. We resigned the work in the south in the fall of 1887 and moved back to our birth place in Hamilton county, Indiana, as we were buying our home back again, and after a respite of two years, there being so few colored Wesleyans in the North to preach to, in the fall of 1887, I cast my lot with the African Methodist Episcopal church at their annual conference held at Marion, Indiana, in September of that year the Rt. Rev. Bishop John M. Brown D. D., of Washington, D. C., presiding. In this connection my first charge was St. Paul’s Temple, Indianapolis, and as follows, viz: Knightstown circuit, Danville, Clinton, Bloomington, South Bend, Ind., Ann Arbor, Mich., Chatham, Ontario, Canada; Minneapolis, Minn.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Danville, Mattoon and Paris, Ill., with a few intervening appointments of minor importance not mentioned. In this church I served under the following bishops, viz: Bishop John M. Brown, B. W. Arnett, C. T. Shaffer, A. W. Wayman, L. J. Coppin, B. F. Lee and Abraham Grant. I cleared four churches of mortgage indebtedness, Bloomington, South
Bend, Ind., Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mattoon, Illinois. Thus obtaining the sobriquet of “The Mortgage Debt Payer.” Also in beautifying the churches. In all my ministry extending over a period of forty-four years from October, 1874 to December, 1918, I had fair success in all lines of service, in winning souls to Christ and fighting the liquor traffic for 35 years until we won National Prohibition, Praise the Lord. I have traveled quite extensively over the country, visited most all of the large cities, sat in the congress of the U. S., on two different occasions, perambulated through the White House, ascended the Washington monument and have seen much of the beautiful scenery of our beloved homeland. I am now incapacitated for further service having had a nervous breakdown on the 10th of Jan, 1918. I have passed my 76th milestone and am now awaiting the summons from on high whenever the Master sees fit to call me from labor to reward, realizing that God has helped me and has sustained me, and delivered me from the evil One, and from dangers both seen and unseen, especially while living in the Southland, now over thirty years ago, one case of which I will mention.

It was in the fall of 1882 or 1883 I don’t just now remember which. A white minister by the name of Rev. H. T. Beese, from New York state, came south to visit our work and to see how the Freed Men were getting along, and he wanted to visit some of them at their homes. I was teaching school at the time and proposed to him that my wife accompany him and he accepted. In so doing they had occasion to pass through town, and to the white people of the south that was “social equality,” the very thing they didn’t want. This was Friday, I think, of the week he was there; he had preached two evenings before this, as he was stopping with us; so on the evening above mentioned, I think it was about the second week in October of that year, he received through the mail about sundown, a note addressed, “Beese at Roberts,” “You
are requested to leave here at once; the sooner you go the better; we have plenty of tar and feathers, ‘yours against Negro Equality.’ ” I went to work at once and got up an armed guard to protect him. So armed guards lay in our house all night. The white Wesleyans wanted him to stay and proposed to stand by him, but they became weak-kneed and sent him away. O! I could tell so much but I must refrain.

In conclusion, I believe that I have accomplished some good. I have overcome.

To my family, relatives and friends, as well as the general public, is this autobiographical sketch affectionately dedicated.

Very truly yours,
Rev. C. W. Roberts,

Interracial Wesleyan revivals and quarterly meetings were held at the Roberts church throughout the early and mid 1850s and the congregation joined their co-religionists in attachking the iniquities of slavery. When the neighborhood's resident minister, the Reverend Wade Roberts, died in 1855 he was praised on the front page of the sect's national newspaper as "a faithful and zealous advocate of human rights" who was "well respected at home, and abroad." No attention was drawn to the color of his skin.3,8

Note* From the book by J. Blaine Hudson "Encyclopedia of the Underground Railroad", page 183:

Afrrican Americans often lived along Underground Railroad lines that branches in several directions from Cincinnati. One route stretched north through Preble and Darke Counties - with a branch-line that crossed into Indiana through "a colored settlement in Israel Township, where Nathan Brown, Ebenezer Elliott and others had stations." Another western route passed through West Fork, "a damned abolition hole," then north to Dunlap "... a Negro settlement from which Hansel and Wade Roberts passed them to Hamilton."
