Washington CORNELL died in this city Saturday afternoon, after an illness of perhaps two weeks, although he had been in failing health for a year or more past. Mr. CORNELL was a native of Warren county, O. (sic. Ohio), and was born January 17, 1826. He grew to manhood there and was married to Sarah WILSON, January 6th, 1848. The family came to this county in 1850, and in 1851 settled on a farm near REED's mill, remaining there until 1884. Mrs. CORNELL died in this city January 3rd, 1903. Eleven children were born to them, seven of whom are now living - George W. and Mrs. Laura WIREMAN in Liberty township, Seneca at Ottumwa, Oscar at Larned, Kan., Sylvanus, Alvah and Mrs. Chloe MILLER in this county. All of them were present at the funeral. Mr. CORNELL was a man of excellent habits and character, and in earlier years had many acquaintances throughout the county where he had lived so long. The body was buried in this city Monday afternoon, Rev. Thos. Osborn conducting the funeral services.3 |

She was born in Warren county, O., in October, 1831 (sic. October 25, 1831, Warren county, Ohio). She was married in the fall of 1849 (sic. January 6, 1848 according to obituary for Washington CORNELL), and in 1850 came to this county with her husband. From that time until seventeen years ago, whe the family removed to this city, she had lived on a farm near REED's mill. Mrs. CORNELL was the mother of eleven children, seven of whom are now living. G. W. and Mrs. Joseph WIREMAN reside in Liberty township; Seneca at Ottumwa; Oscar at Larned, Kansas; Sylvenus, Alva and Mrs. William MILLER, in or near this city. All her children were with her in her last illness. Mrs. CORNELL was an excellent woman and was held in high regard by all who knew her. She was ill about two weeks, with pneumonia. The remains will be interred tomorrow afternoon, funeral services being held by Rev. C. Springer at the family home. SARAH CORNELL DIES Mother of Seneca Cornell Passes Away at Her Home in Fairfield After two weeks of suffering from a severe attack of pneumonia Mrs. Sarah M. Cornell, mother of Seneca Cornell, of this city, passed away at her home in Fairfield at 11:10 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Cornell was about 74 years of age and is survived by her husband and seven children. Funeral services will be from the residence in Fairfield at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Pioneer of Jefferson County. Mrs. Cornell was one of the early pioneers of Jefferson county, having come with her husband from Ohio in 1852. During the years since they came to Iowa Mr. and Mrs. Cornell have rsdided in Jefferson county. Had Mrs. Cornell lived until January 17, she would have witnessed the fifty-fith anniversary to Washington Cornell. Her husband, who survives her, is reported to be in very poor health, and considerable apprehension is felt for his recovery. Sick Two Weeks. About two weeks ago Mrs. Cornell was taken ill with an attack of pneumonia and since that time has lingered between life and death. Her children, with the exception of Seneca Cornell of this city, were at her bedside this morning when the end came.
