========
1910 census says that he has been married for 24 years and had 2 children, both living.
1930 census says that his age at first marriage was 26. Since he is 71 now, this fact confirms that he was married prior to his marriage to Tobine and suggests that that marriage was about 1884/85.
It appears he was actually married 3 times, first to Synove then to Bertha then to Tobine.
Employment* Shoemaker (repair). 1930 census says that he had his own shop.3

EMANUEL S. HUGLUND

Funeral services were held for Emanuel S. Helgund of Monticello at the Peterson Funeral Parlors on Saturday, May 26, R.L. Wiechmann officiating. Interment took place at the Union Cemetery at Cambridge.

E.S. Heglund was born at Wernland, Sweden on December 25, 1857. He learned the trade of shoemaker at the age of twelve, and carried on this work both in Norway and Sweden.

In October of 1881, at the age of 24, he came to this country, settling at Montevideo, Minn. Later he also lived at Granite Falls and at Cambridge. At Granite Falls he was active in the Lutheran Church under Rev. Lukensgord, and sang in the choir for many years.

In 1921, he was married to Reinhild Tobina. The Lord blessed this marriage with two children.

Five years ago he was stricken with a heart ailment, confining him to his home. In April of this year he broke a hip in a fall. He was taken to University Hospital and returned the 2nd day of May to enter the Rest Home of Monticello.

He passed to his eternal rest on the 23rd day of May. He reached the age of 87 years, four months, and twenty-eight days.

Mourning his death are his beloved wife Reinhold, two children, Eugene and Illena, one sister, Mrs. C. Anderson of Minneapolis, six nephews and nieces.5,12

Heglund Puts Cooking On Back Burner

After 49 years of cooking other people's meals or washing their dishes, Illene Heglund of Monticello may continue a bit of cooking, now that she's retired, she said Monday. But it will be on a small scale - mostly for potluck get-togethers with three special friends at Broadway Square apartments, where she lives.

Heglund, who has worked at Stella's Cafe since 1965, was honored Tuesday at a retirement open house. She's been very loyal and dependable," her employer, Stella Schneider said. "She's always been there when I've needed her."

Born in Minneapolis 68 years ago, Heglund moved to Monticello as a baby, with her parents, Tobine and E.S. Heglund. She lived with her mother and brother at the family home at Sixth and Maple until after their deaths, she said, and moved to Broadway Square apartments in 1990.

Heglund began her career in Monticello restaurants in 1945, at age 18. She worked as a dishwasher under five owners before the business was purchased by Stella Schneider. After three years, it outgrew the former site, where Carlson Travel network is now located, and was moved a few doors west to its current location, Schneider said.

Heglund's transition from dishwasher to cook came because "I was so shy, so (Stella) got me out front, to get me to open up more," she recalled with a laugh. "Now, I can't keep quiet."

Since 1968 she's usually worked afternoons-to-evening shifts, which she refers to as nights. "they always wanted someone older to work nights, with the kids." In some ways that shift is harder than the earlier one, Heglund said, because it means cleaning grills and fryers, peeling potatoes and shredding cabbage for coleslaw. But it also means not having to make soups and gravy.

During the past few years, she's worked half-time, partly because of troubles with arthritis and bad circulation in one leg. Her life won't change drastically now that she's retired, Heglund said.

I can go visit my friends and people in my old neighborhood." As for hobbies, she may have to find one. "I used to oil paint and put model cars together, years ago," but her hands can no longer manage that.

Said Stella: We've always classed her as one of our family. We took her on trips and to family reunions; and she and her brother spent holidays with us after her mother died. We've enjoyed her a lot.

Both her job and the community have changed dramatically over the years, Heglund said. "I used to know most everyone; now there's a lot of new people-I hardly know anyone."

Biography* May Wick (undated note) wrote: Ragnihild came to Stanley from Norway, married Olaf Olsen, had three (3) daughters, later they moved to N.D. and then to Seattle, Wash., they both died there also 2 daughters. The 3rd lives in Seattle, her name is Thora Dubois.
Biography Richard Bates writes:

Mom, Thora. I consider her extremely interesting. This was a young woman that hung out with and married a “boxer”. In the 1920’s this would be hanging out with the mob. At this time women wore bathing suits that came down to their knees. Mom had a butterfly tattooed on the inside of her thigh! Considering that a man would have put this on, this had to be the ultimate risqué adventure. It sounds like mom was a wild woman, at least for awhile. She was probably a lot of fun until she had children. Then reality settled in2
Birth*19 Jun 1907 Wisconsin; Thora's death certificate lists her father as:" Not Available" and her mother as: "Unavailable Olson". In 1945 her SS application lists her father as Olaf Gilman Olson and her mother as Ragnhild Steviang.

Her christening record indicates that she was an illegitmate child and lists her father as John Lund.

Based on the christening record, the 1910 census info and Thora's death certificate, I have concluded that Olaf Olson is not her father, but that he became her step-father (by marrying her mother) when Thora was 2.3,4,5

Biography* Lucille doesn't remember how Madt Fjelsted's name was spelled. His parents stayed in Norway. He was an only sibling. He had relatives in Eau Claire, WI that he inherited money from while married to Bertine. He blew the money not spending any on Bertine or the children. Madt was an alcoholic who when Malvin was 17 or 18 was at home when he threatened to shoot Bertine. Malvin took him out back by the outhouse and beat the living tar out of him and told him to leave and never come back to Stanley. Also remembers Bertine saying that she know Madt would come back and watch the place from across the street or peek in windows. When we read your dad's story we thought maybe that's the ghost he saw. LOL [Dixie Hansen comments: I sent Kim and Lucille a couple of stories my Dad, Win Hansen, wrote about time spent with Elroy and his other Brandvold/Fjelstad cousins when he was young- it included the memory of "seeing a ghost" in Stanley one night when they were playing games after dark.]

Also when Norman was three Madt picked him up and threw him down stairs, Malvin was at bottom of stairs catching him.

He ws employed as a Laborer for the Big Four Lumber in Chippewa Co. and lived in Stanley, Wiscosin. Mads gave his nearest relative as Bertha Felstad. He was described as being of medium height and medium build with brown eyes and dark hair.4

Divorce*11 Jun 1928 Chippewa Co., Wisconsin; Jerry Colburn: Bertina's second husband, Madts, had to have left home in the mid '20s because Elroy was born in '19 and he talked about remembering him. Matt just pulled up `stakes' and left one day and it was felt he could not support that large of a family. Elroy had an inkling that he headed for Eau Claire and then possibly went back to Norway. If you ever run across anything concrete please let me know. Elroy tried but also ran into a 'brick wall'.

The divorce proceedings found as true, Bertha's complaint averring cruel and inhuman treatment. Evidence was given that, beginning in about July 1914, Matt began a course of cruel treatment and practiced personal violence against Bertha, calling her vile and indecent names, and striking and throwing things at her. Bertha's statement said that in the fall of 1914, Matt was convicted of having illicit intercourse with another woman and was sentenced to serve a year in state prison in Waupon. He was released after 7 months but was reported to continue cohabiting with women of bad character and drinking intoxicating liquors. She also stated that for the last year, Matt has been sleeping in a shack which he built adjacent to the barn building at Bertha's residence, and refused to sleep or eat in her home. Finally, she stated that Matt was not supporting the family financially, providing only about $20-$25 month, although he was employed steadily and was earning about $100/month. The record indicated that Bertha owned the home, it having come to her upon the death of her first husband.

Matt Fjelstad was served, but did not answer the summons or appear in court.

The divorce was granted and was filed on June 11, 1928 and filed on June 26, 1928. Bertha was given custody of the three children from the marriage (Mabel, Norman, and Elroy). Matt was ordered to pay Bertha $20/month beginning on 1 July 1928 and was also ordered to pay $35 Bertha's legal fees.; Principal=Ragnhild Bertine Tobiasdatter13,14,12
