NELSON L. KIMBRELL
1839-1920.

Nelson L. Kimbrell, one of Cass county's highly esteemed citizens, died at his home on West Mechanic Street in Harrisonville, on Friday afternoon, July 23, 1920. Mr. Kimbrell had been a great sufferer for sveral months past, and his death was not altogether unexpected by his family and many friends.

Nelson L. Kimbrell was born in Johnson Co., Indiana, on May 31, 1839, and was, at the time of his death, 81 years, 1 month and 22 days of age. He was the second son and fourth child of Benjamin E. and Katie Kimbrell. We do not know just what year he came to Missouri, but he was engaged in farming, until a few years ago, when he retired from farming and moved to Harrisonville, where he made his home until his death.

On May 12, 1864, he was married to Hannah Dvis in Meredosia, Morgan County, Illinois, and to this union seven children were born - three sons and four daughters - as follws: William L. Kimbrell of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; Benjamin E. Kimbrell of Freewater, Oregon; Mrs. Charles C. (Joah) Colville of Coleman, Mo. and Mrs. Gertrude Denny and Miss Dora Kimbrell who were at the home of their parents. Katie E. and John Kimbrell preceded their father in death. Besides the living children, he is survived by his aged and faithful companion in life; two sisters, Mrs. John Davis and Mrs. Fannie Davis, of Purdon, Texas, 22 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends, who sincerely mourn their loss.

In December, 1891, he united with the Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church, and was baptized by Elder W. R. Storms. He was ordained as a Deacon of that church in 1910, and filled that office to the satisfaction of the church, his faith in Jesus always being manifest by an humble, meek and lowly sprit, endearing himself to the church and to his friends.

Funeral services were held at the family home in Harrisonville on Sunday, July 25, at 2:30 o'clock p.m. and were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. W.L. Hall, of Blue Springs, Mo. The large crowd that was in attendance attested the high esteem in which he was held by his neighbors and friends. His body was taken to the Wills Cemetery, near Peculiar, this county, where it was laid away under a bower of flowers, to await a Better Day, when there will be no parting - BY HIS PASTOR, W.L. HALL, Blue Springs, Mo.

IS DEAD AT 94 YEARS

CLOSE OF LONG CAREER FOR JAS. R. COLVILLE

Joined Odd Fellows Sixty-Eight years Ago - First Vote for Abraham Lincoln

At the age of 94 years, six months and 33 days, James Robert Colville of Pleasant Hill, came to the end of the Trail of Life Monday morning last at 11 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James S. Thomas, on North Taylor street. He had been failing rapidly for months, but the critical stage of illness was but a matter of a few weeks.

Private services were conducted at the Thomas home by the Rev. W.J. Laws at about 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, the body then being moved to the Baptist Church where it lay in state until 1 o'clock. The Rev. Laws then presided at public services in honor of the dead, and the body was carried to its final resting place in the Baptist Cemetery by six grandsons - Homer, Earl and Clyde Colville, George, Harry and Ross Thomas.

Mr. Colville was born April 18, 1836 in Clark County, Illinois. His people moved to Collinsville, Ill, when he was quite young. He was reared there and there was married to Miss Angelina Berkey on March 17, 1858. To this union four children were born, three of whom were present for the funeral services - Mrs. Thomas, city and W.R. and C.C. Colville, who farm west of Pleasant Hill.

Mr. Colville came to Cass County in 1866 (having since resided in this vicinity) and in 1867 his wife died, leaving him with the four small children. He was married again in 1871, the second wife being Miss Margaret Markham. Of this union one son was born, B.H. Colville, who resides in Kansas City.

In 1911 Mr. Colville was again, by death, bereft of a companion, and in 1913 he moved from the farm into Pleasant Hill, this city having since been his home.

In addition to the children noted, Mr. Colville is survived by 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

At about the age of 20 he was converted and united with the Baptist Church in which he had rendered faithful adherence for about 75 years. Also, Mr. Colville joined the Odd Fellows lodge in the 60's and, save for a short lapse, he had been a member of that order ever since. In 1860, too, he cast his first ballot in a presidential election, supporting Abraham Lincoln in his first race for the presidency. Never since that first vote had he missed casting his ballot for the Republican nominee for President. He had hoped to be able to vote in the recent general off-year election, but his illness made this impossible.

The active years of Mr. Colville's life were devoted to farming, with bee-keeping as a side issue. He became well known as an apiarist. After he came to town and had made a home for himself on what is known as College Hill, he continued to work with bees and produced a great deal of honey, always finding a ready maket for the product.

The old gentleman had never expressed himself as to the imminence of death save that, upon one occasion, he remakred to Mrs. Thomas that he did not understand why a Divine Providence had left him here so long, when all his former friends and associates had "crossed to the other side."

One day, as he prepared to go from the Thomas home to his own establishment on College Hill, he asked for a hymn book. This he took with him. When he returned he brought back the book - and in it had marked the hymns which on Tuesday were sung as his funeral.

Mr. Colville, until a year or so ago, had been remarkable rugged and active. He was tall, lithe, erect as the proverbial Indian, and his stride was alert and confident. He bore the weight of years courageously and also courageously he came unto the end. His life, as his character, had been upstanding. The journey through this so-called "Vale of Tears" had been interesting, but he had stayed here long beyond his allotted span and, beyond a doubt, entered into the mysteries of the beyond without a fear.2,4

Biography* Bio posted on Find-A-Grave by Mike Alexander:

Elijah Davis was the son of James B Davis and Elizabeth Hawkins, and the Grandson of Charles Edwin Davis and Hannah Gaines. Elijah was born in Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1818. Elijah's dad James B Davis moved the family to Cass County Illinois in 1835 near Virginia, Illinois. Elijah married Elizabeth Shoopman in 1837 in Cass County, Illinois. I do not know when they moved from Cass County Illinois to Cass County Missouri. Elijah Davis' sons James P and John B Davis and families stopped over in Cass Co, MO in the winter of 1878 on their way to Texas from Cass Co, IL. Elizabeth (Shoopman)Davis is also buried here. James B Davis, Elijah's dad and Elijah's younger brothers Edward and Richard Lee Davis are buried in Clark Cemetery in Cass County Illinois. Elijah Davis and family can be found on the Census for Cass County, Illinois for the years 1840, 1850, and 1860, and on the Cass County, Missouri Census for 1880. We could not find them listed for the 1870 Census in either Illinois or Missouri.

Note* Notes posted on Find-A-Grave by Mike Alexander:

Elizabeth (Shoopman)Davis was the daughter of William W Shoopman. Elizabeth may have been born in 1819* in Tennessee.(Gravestone reads 1822.) Four souces for year she was born are, 1 Gravestone - 1822, 2 Affidavid she signed or wrote in Aug 1837 for her marriage to Elijah Davis that she was 18 Years Old, 3 1850 Census, Dec of 1850 showing her age as 31, and 4 1860 Census, Jun of 1860 showing her age as 38. The Census has been known to be wrong in detail. Two prime considerations should be Grave Stone and Marriage Note and surprisingly grave stones are also in error from time to time more so on year of birth than year of death. There was a family group sheet that shows ca 1919 as well. She married Elijah Davis 23 Aug 1837 in Cass County, Illinois. She died in Cass County, Missouri in 1905 and was buried in Wills Cemetery where her husband Elijah was buried3

Obituary Clipping #3 [dated 4/?/38; source paper(s) not identified]

EMMA LOUISE HOWARD
1853-1938

Mrs. Emma Louise Howard, daughter of John and Emma Louise Billings, was born in Birmingham, England July 22, 1853 and departed this life at the home of her son, A.B. Howard, near Peculiar, Mo., March 30, 1938, at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 10 days.

She came to America with her parents in 1871 and settled in Central Missouri. In 1873 she was united in marriage to R.S. Howard. To this union, eight children were born, five of whom survive. They are Mrs. Edith Rogers of Norman, Okla., A.B. Howard of Peculiar, Mo., W.B. Howard of Thorp, Wash; Mrs. Amy Alexander of Tampa, Fla; and Mrs. Eunice Colville of Ellensburg, Wash.; also one sister, Mrs. Polly Howard of Moberly, Mo., and two brothers, Howard Billings of Alexander, Ark. and Walter Billings of Tulare, Calif. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends.

In 18?? she with her husband and family moved from Pettis County to Cass County where she spent the remainder of her life.

She received Holy Baptism in infancy and in early childhood was received into full membership in the Lutheran Church by confirmation. In 1911 she became a member of the Bethany Christian Church, where her membership remained until her death.

So we must bid farewell to another of our Pioneer Mothers, for she has been called to meet her Lord. Her bouyant, kindly spirit shed sunshine where ever she went. Her love for little children revealed her true spirit of motherhood. She bore the cares of her long earthly sojoun in the confidence and joy of true Christian faith; so that she could say:

A few who have watched me sail away
Will miss my craft from the busy day;
Some friendly barks that have anchored near
In silent sorrow will drop a tear.
But I shall have peacfully furled my sail
In mooring sheltered from storm and gail,
And greeted the friends who have sailed before
O'er the Unknown Sea to the Unknown Shore

The funeral service was held on Friday afternoon at the United Brethren Church in Raymore, with Rev. H.R. Wharton of Peculiar officiating. Pallbearers were Ralph C___, Howard Bowdin, Millard Bowdin, John William Howard, Marion Howard and John Walter Howard. Music was furnished by the high school boys quartet from Peculiar, and Mrs. Dwight Whitten and Mrs. Raymond Harper.

Obituary dated 16 September 1915 (Paper identified only as "Democrat")

Death of Robert Samuel Howard
(By Leonard O. Yohn)

Robert Samuel Howard was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, October 5, 1836, and died at the family home on the Lane farm, about three miles north of Coleman, Missouri, Saturday, September 11, 1915, aged 78 years, 11 months and 6 days.

Mr. Howard came to Missouri with his parents in his early boyhood. While still a youth he united with the Salem Baptist Church in Ralls county. He was married to Miss Lucinda Smith in 1865, and to this union two daughters were born - Mrs. Jessie McCune of Vandalia, Missouri, and Mrs. Bertha Hughes of Paris, Missouri, both of whom are living. His first wife died in 1870.

In May, 1878, Mr. Howard was married to Miss Emma Louise Billing, by whom he is survived, and to this union eight children were born, two of whom died in their youth. Those who are now living are: John W. Howard, Alva B. Howard and Mrs. Eunice Colville, all residing in the Coleman vicinity; Walter B. Howard of Wendell, Idaho; Mrs. Amy Alexander of Drexel, Missouri, and Mrs. Edith Rodgers of Norman, Oklahoma. Walter B. Howard and Mrs. Rodgers were unable to be in attendance at the funeral of their father. The deceased is survived by a wife, eight children, fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one brother and one sister.

The funeral services were conducted at the family home by the Rev. J.S. Price, pastor of the Coleman Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon, September 12, at 2:30 o-clock, and the body was laid to rest in the Raymore Cemetery.

Mr. Howard had been a sufferer from cancers constantly for the past several years, one near his right eye and one near his left ear. He was a patient sufferer all through his long illness, until death relieved him of his earthly troubles and called him to that Blessed Land of Rest.

During his early manhood Mr. Howard was an extensive traveler. He traveled over the greater part of Central America and Panama, and at the time of the discovery of gold in California in 1849 he went with the boys to the gold fields when this country was a wilderness, inhabited by roving bands of Indians and when wild herds of buffaloes roamed all over the plains.

Mr. Howard was a splendid old gentleman, was a friend to everybody who knew him, and always had a warm handshake for everybody. The Coleman community has lost a fine citizen and a good neighbor. We extend our heartfeld sympathy to the bereaved loved ones. May God's comforting spirit comfort them in these hours of sorrow.2,4
