Burrton, owns 160 acres, ninety in cultivation, dwelling 16 x 20, and makes a specialty of keeping fine milch cows and selling cream to creamery. Was born in Pennsylvania, July 20, 1840, and in 1849 moved with his parents to Illinois and in 1861 enlisted in Company G., 46th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Col. John A. Davis, and participated in the engagements at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Siege of Corinth and Big Hatchie; in the latter engagement he was very badly wounded, being shot through both thighs, disabling him entirely from active life, rendering one of his feet partially paralyzed and while in the hospital had to fight the doctor off with his crutch to prevent him from cutting off his leg, and was discharged for disability in 1863. In 1871 he came to Kansas and located his present homestead, but shortly after moved to Hutchinson, Reno County and engaged in livery business and while there he was elected Justice of the Peace and served six years. He was also Under Sheriff of Reno County for four years and while in that capacity had a great deal of very dangerous duty to perform, arresting horse thieves and desperadoes. While Justice of the Peace, he studied law and was admitted to the bar, and commenced the practice of law, first in Hutchinson and then located in Nickerson...."4 | |

Death* | 7 Sep 1914 | Mount Hope, Sedgwick Co., Kansas; Obituary published in the Hutchinson News, Hutchinson, Kansas on 8 September 1914, page 8: PASSING OF A PIONEER the Death of Jonathan McMurry at Mount Hope HELPED START THE TOWN One of the First Settlers of Hutchinson and First Master of Masonic Lodge Jonathan McMurray, one of Hutchinson's pioneers, and first master of Hutchinson Masonic lodge, died last evening at his home in Mount Hope. He is about 75 years of age and is survived by the wife, and six sons and daughters, Claude McMurray of Mount Hope, Harry McMurray, who lives in Kentucky, Charles McMurray of Greeley, Colo., Mrs. Cora Worthington, of Haven, Mrs. Meda Dow , of Mount Hope, and Mrs. Edith Garrison of Mount Hope. The funeral will occur at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the home at Mount Hope under Masonic auspices. The member of Reno lodge, of this city, of which the deceased was one of the charter members, will attend the funeral. Johnathan McMurray settled in Hutchinson when the town first started in 1872, he and his brothers being very prominent in the affairs of the new town. He was one of the handful of Masons who organized the Hutchinson lodge, and for three years, 1873, 1874, and 1875 he was master of the lodge. He was an apt musician, and played in what was known as McMurrary's orchestra in the early days. No social function or dance was complete in those pioneer days unless the McMurray orchestra, or string band, furnished the music. Others of the brothers are "Mac" McMurray, who now lives at Pratt, Ash McMurray, of Mount Hope, and Peter McMurray, who is in Oklahoma.4,9 |

Death* | 11 Apr 1878 | near El Paso, Sedgwick Co., Kansas; Obituary published in the Hutchinson Herald, Hutchinson, Kansas on 20 April 1878, page 3: DEATH OF MATTHEW RIDDLE Our people were startled last Friday by the intelligence of the death of Mr. Matthew Riddle. He had long been a citizen of this city, the father-in-law of Judge J. McMurry and Mr. Gus Moad, a clerk for Mr. John Jordan, the Raff brothers and Mr. James Read and we can say in the fullest sense of the term, highly respected by all who knew him. He was 65 years of age but possessed the vigor that comes from having lived a pure life. He thought kindly of poeple and treated them kindly. Indeed he was like on of whom Goldsmith wrote: "E'en children followed with endearing wile, And plucked his gown to share the Good Man's smile." He was a Free Mason and a member of the Presbyterian church. To his wife and children who survive him it is sweet to know that he knew the closet as a place of prayer. The particulars of his death are these: He has for some months been conducting a store belonging to Mr. James Read at Arkansas City. That establishment was being moved to Hutchinson, where he was again to have taken charge of it. On the way near El Passo he was thrown from the top of the wagon and crushed beneath the wheels. He was expected home and the shock to his waiting family was nearly as cruel as the merciless iron that mangled him. He was buried last Saturday by the Masons and his remains were escorted to the place of interment by hundred (sic) of sorrowing friends. The day was one of exceeding beauty. Flowers were starting, the grass growing green and the sky as bright as if the angels had washed it. The solemn procession moved out to the music of a funeral march discoursed by the band. Matthew Riddle was born in Centre county Pennsylvania, 65 years ago. The maiden name of the wife who survives him was Miss Beard, she was the mother of his children, seven in number. From Pennsylvania he moved to Illinois in 1857. During his whole life he was a farmer and merchant at intervals. From Illinois he moved to this country in 1874. In his manners he was always agreeable and considerate. He was one in whom every body would have the fullest confidence. At the funeral there was perhaps no sincerer mourner than Mr. James Read.6 |
