FatherCalvin Luther Holbrook b. 28 Nov 1850, d. 17 Apr 1910
MotherSophronia Ivers b. Sep 1854, d. 24 Aug 1915
Biography* Biographical entry on Find-A-Grave (excerpted from The Pioneer Days of Effie Geibel, plublished in the Pierce County Tribune on 17 March 1960:

Seley Britton Holbrook was the son of Calvin Luther Holbrook and Sophronia Ivers. He married 1st Flora Spencer. They divorced before 1910. He married 2nd Selma. He and Flora had children 7 children, 5 living:
Lewis Holbrook
Oren Holbrook
Forest Holbrook
Ernest Holbrook
Ronald I. (George) Holbrook

In March of 1919 he and his 2nd wife Selma moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to farm.

In the spring of 1882 his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Luther Holbrook and son Seley and his father's sister and husband, Charles Mendenhall and family [Ed note: Charles Mendenhall married Emmeline Holbrook, daughter of Calvin Britton and Mary Ann Gearhart Holbrook, sister of Calvin Luther Holbrook], decided to leave their home in Hastings, Nebraska. They came north to the Dakota Territory.

A covered wagon driven by a mule team brought them over the Indian Trail to the place where they found much beauty and happiness, Pleasant Lake. Their objective in coming here was to take what was called a "squatter's right," later called a "pre-emption."

His parents and other members of the party followed the Indian Trail until they came to a spot of trees, which is now known as Pleasant Lake. His father and uncle were very pleased with the location because of the abundance of trees and the excellent spring water.

Both father and uncle built small log cabins on the land where Moral Shively now has his farm buildings.

After living here on a semi-trial basis, they made the decision that they would be happy with a permanent settlement. His father built his home buildings on the west side of the timber; his uncle on the east side. They hewed logs for the purpose of making lumber for the construction of their homes and other necessary buildings. Both men constructed 7-room homes; three rooms upstairs, four rooms downstairs. Both homes were very well constructed homes with plastered walls on the interior.

In the year 1895 my parents decided to leave the state and move to a warmer climate. They went to Oregon and lived for one year. My father had a prune ranch ten miles south of Salem. He could not stop thinking of his farm in North Dakota and moved back here to raise grain and Hereford cattle.

In 1898, his father moved to southern Georgia. His sister Effie took very sick with Typhoid fever and the doctors told his parents that if they would get her North, she might live. They got there to this good climate and recovered nicely.

In 1907, his father tore the log house down and built the home in which I now live. My father died April 18, 1910; and my mother died August 24, 1915.
