OBITUARY of Effie Geibel
Published in the Pierce County Tribune, Rugby, North Dakota, April 1965
Services Held Friday for Mrs. Effie Geibel, 80; Born at Pleasant Lake
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, April 9, for Mrs. Effie Geibel, 80, in the church at Pleasant Lake almost within hearing of the gurgling of the springs she loved so much. Mrs. Geibel claimed she was the only person in the community of her age who was a true native--born here. And most of the years of her life--nearly all, in fact--were spent near the springs in the woods at Pleasant Lake (8 miles east of Rugby and in Benson County). For nearly 60 years she lived in a home where the west lawn sloped sharply towards the springs. The wonderful water, which she tried to get Rugby to use for so many years. She never lived to see it. Just a few months ago she wrote us about something, and again touched on the matter of getting the city to avail itself of this wonderful water only eight miles away (Rugby's water is considerable less than wonderful if the criterion is hardness, etc.).

Buried Here
Although the services were held at the Methodist Church at Pleasant Lake, burial was in Persilla Watts Cemetery, Rugby. She was carried to her final resting place by Ralph Bullock, Conrad Mattson, Lawrence Moen, Merlyn Norby, Rolf Olson and Moral Shively.

Honorary bearers were Melvin Hageness, Paul Hoffman, Dr. O. W. Johnson, Jay McClintock, J. W. Moffatt and Peter Paulson.

Officiating at the services was Pastor Lawrence Hoganson who serves the Pleasant Lake Church well as well as Rugby's (Methodist). Mrs. Marvin Modrow was organist and Burton Kristjanson sang, "Evening Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art."

Mrs. Geibel was born in a log cabin at Pleasant, March 19, 1885, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin [Luther] Holbrook. Except for short absences, she lived in the woods at Pleasant Lake all her life.

Survivors are two sons, Homer C., of Minneapolis and Eugene C. of Longmont, Colo., and a daughter, Meriam, Mrs. Don Bigelow, Pakistan; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband who passed away in 1930, and a brother, Seley Holbrook.

Mrs. Geibel passed away in Minneapolis Monday, April 5, of a heart attack. She has suffered an attack in February and suffered another shortly after her arrival in Minneapolis.

In 1882, Mrs. Geibel's parents, and her father's sister [Emeline] and her husband and family, the Charles Mendenhalls, left Hastings, Nebraska, for Dakota Territory. They came via covered wagon and mules and they decided to stop at Pleasant Lake. In this state, they pretty much followed Indian trails. In fact, later they often worried about hostile Indians who moved from Ft. Totten to the Turtle Mountains and vice versa--and who used the same trail the Holbrooks and Mendenhalls had used to get here. But Mr. Holbrook learned the Sioux language which helped in getting along with the Indians.

The men loved the springs and trees of Pleasant Lake and each built a log cabin and pre-empted land which, after statehood, became homesteads. The cabins were built where the Moral Shively farm buildings are now.

So many buffalo bones cluttered the prairies in the area, the lake south of the woods, was named Broken Bone Lake, and, we believe, Broken Bone School is still in business. The Indians gathered wagons full and hauled them to Devils Lake.

But when Effie was ready for school, the school was not ready for her. Her father and uncle hired a teacher for their children. Later, as there was no high at Rugby, Effie attended the University of Grand Forks for a while and for parts of three years studied voice in Chicago.

When Effie was born March 19, 1885, there was no doctor to be had. But other people had moved into the area and luckily, one was a former nurse in Chicago. The nurse attended Mrs. Holbrook and the baby. The father went for a "hired girl" 30 miles away. It had been a tough winter and the roads were so poor Mr. Holbrook had to walk the team going and coming.

When Effie was but a year old, her mother took her to a high place to watch the first train come through from the east.

A man who lived in Minnewaukan brought mail once a week. His route ended up near the Mouse River.

In 1895, Mr. Holbrook decided he would move to Oregon to raise prunes. He did but after a year, the lure of the woods and springs at Pleasant Lake was too much. Three years later, he decided to move to George but young Effie contracted typhoid and the doctor told the parents that if they would move back to the North the child might live.

n 1907, Mr. Holbrook tore down his log cabin and built the home which still stands in the woods and in which Mrs. Geibel lived so many years.

Effie's husband, for a while, had a store in Pleasant Lake and at first business was good. But as the towns grew larger, he moved a short distance and offered various services which interested the tourists. But that played out too when the highway was re-routed about 2 miles south of Pleasant Lake proper.

Friends indulged in a bit of a blow-out on the occasion of Mrs. Geibel's 50th birthday anniversary. She always cherished a poem one Emily Spickler had written for the occasion. We quote a portion of it:

Let me sit down, now
With my patching and dreaming,
And gaze through the window
Over my own house yard.
It slopes on the side,
Down where the springs run through it.
And by the fence
The stately oak trees guard
This, my home.
It is just an old home
As it stands by the roadside,
Nay, this my home
Where the shadows of loved ones linger
With the memories of childhood
Here doth my heart abide!

And indeed it did. She love this place.1
