Anthony Genick1

M, b. 1843, d. 5 July 1883
Biography* From: Information on the Genick Family from A History of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota 1872-1972 by Carl and Amy Narvestad:

The family of Anthony and Rosalie Genick was well known in the Granite Falls village. They were among the Santee people who came from Nebraska in 1910. The Tribune records Rosalie's death in April, 1919 after a thirty years' illness. Rosalie was born in Yellow Medicine county and was ten years old at the time of the outbreak. Her children were Thomas, Mary Brown and Sophie Wilson.

Thomas Jeffereson Genick was born at Santee, Nebraska February 17, 1870. He was an engineer under civil service at the Indian school at Flandreau, South Dakota until 1933, when he came to Granite Falls and started farming. He died in April, 1948. The Genick farm and 32 acres was sold to Charlie Christopherson.

Genick's sisters Sophie and Mary, were leaders in the Granite Falls community. Mrs. Wilson was a spokesman for the Santee people during the days of adjustment in the 1930's, after passage of the Indian Reorganization Act which provided land allotments at Granite Falls for the first time in the settlement's history. She was successful in getting assignments for her group through persistent appeals to Washington, although the Santees were a minority group at Granite Falls.

Mrs. Wilson died November 21, 1952 a the age of 81. She was born at Santee, Nebraska, April 12, 1871 and came to Granite Falls with the family in 1910. Mrs. Wilson was married four times. Her surviving children were Lavina Townsend, Josephine Cook, Ernest Ross, Paul Ross, and Mrs. Olive Posey.

Mary Genick Brown was born in Nebraska and married John W. Brown at Yankton, South Dakota in May, 1888. Mr. Brown died December 18, 1950 and Mary January 26, 1952. Their children were Lillian, Mrs. Alec Ross and Thomas Brown.

SUICIDE AT SANTEE

Anthony Genick, a Well-Known Trader and Farmer, Kills Himself at the Agency

The Cause of the Self-Destruction Not Apparent - His Squaw Wife Discovers Him Dead.

SHOT THROUGH THE HEAD

Anthony Genick, a well-known farmer at Santee agency, committed suicide on July 5 at his home by shooting himself through the head. He was found dead in bed by his wife, who is an Indian woman. The revolver with which the deed was committed was found by his side, still partly clasped in the dead man's hand. The suicide had clothed himself in his best, with particular attention to the arrangement of his position so as to not have his shirt or coat soiled by the SPURTING LIFE-BLOOD, which he knew would follow the fatal shot. His wife and her children went away from home on the morning of the Fourth, leaving Mr. Genick alone. He was urged to attend a Fourth of July celebration a few miles distant to which his wife was going, but declined on the plea of not feeling well. On the morning of the 5th as Mrs. Genick was riding homeward she was met by an Indian who told her that the house was closed, and her huband could be seen inside LYING LIFELESS ON THE BED, as it was supposed. She drove rapidly to her home and found the worst fears realized. Genick lay partially turned over, and the hole in his head just back of his ear demonstrated how sure had been his shot. The blood had run from the wound to the bed, saturating all of the under blankets and dripping on the floor, but the dead man's garments were untouched by the gory stains. Only one barrel of the revolver was emptied, and the bullet which was extracted from the dead man's brain corresponded with the bore, indicating that NO FOUL PLAY was at the bottom of the deed. Another evidence of the suicide was the locking of the house inside, and the unmolested condition of everything. For some reason, however, and a strange one from the evident deliberation which accompanied the deed - Genick left no note of his motive in SEEKING A SUICIDE'S DEATH, but he had apparently put himself out of the way in a most effectual and instantaneous manner. Anthony Genick was a Frenchman by nationality, as indicated by his name, and was born in Detroit, where his family are very reputable people. At an early day he came westward and went among the Santees as a blacksmith. He became one of the tribe by marrying a squaw, and when the reservation was fixed his farm of 160 acres of the most fertile land was deeded to him. It is in the center of the reservation and is looked upon as a valuable piece of property. Also, by trading, he acquired A HANDSOME COMPETENCE, and has been looked upon for some time as the richest man in Knox county. He retired from trading a year ago, but before that time his presence in this city was quite frequent and he was well known among the business men whom he met. He was very sharp and reliable in business transactions and made money rapidly. His house contained at the time of his suicide a large amount of money, in paper and gold. In a tin can was found a quantity of greenbacks and in a bag, hidden carefully away, was a heavy hoard of gold, the whole amounting to NOT LESS THAN $7,000, which he had kept with him for some time. The fact that this money was untouched, although a part of it might have been easily found, was an additional evidence that no robber had fired the fatal bullet. The deceased man was buried on Saturday last with much pomp and great evidence of grief. Although he was one of those individuals often spoken of contemptuously as a "squaw man," he was very highly regarded by the tribe and by all who knew him for his business capacity and integrity.

ANOTHER INDIAN SCANDAL

Santee Agency Furnishes the Material for Another Sensational Case.

Niobrara, Neb., Pioneer, 27: Knox county has in the past few years furnished a number of sensations wherein Santee agency has supplied the material. The notorius case of Chaska, the half-breed who married a white girl by the name of Cora Belle Fellows, both former resident of the agency, has hardly become cold when another of still greater magnitude looms up.

A half-breed by the name of John Brown, of Yankton agency, was last December married to a girl of like ancestry and complexion. It is said that Agent Kinney, of the same agency, granted Brown a "decree of divorce." On the strength of this alleged "divorce" young Brown abandoned his first wife, whom he married under compulsion, and last May took to his bosom the blushing half-breed maiden of Santee agency in the person of Mary Genick. About a month ago Mrs. Brown No. 1 gave birth to a child. With the honeymoon of the last marriage scarcely over, a warrant charging John Brown with bigamy lands him in the Yankton jail, where he remains thoughtfully contemplating his circumstances and future prospects.

John's first wife was a pupil in one of the schools at Santee agency at the same time he was. Mary, his last wife, was also an acquaintance. She is an heiress in the estate of Antoine Genick, a Frenchman, who suicided in '83, Dr. Geo. W. Ira, of this place, becoming her guardian. On Tuesday evening of this week John's attorney, in the person of V.V. Barnes, of Yankton, accompanied by the last wife and her mother, made applicaiton before Judge Cooley, in the probate court, for settlement of Mary's share in $10,000 of government bonds, on the ground of having reached her majority. Application will be made in the regular term, August 6. In the meantime it would be well for any having an interest in this young woman to do her business. It is understood that her husband's attorney asks a $500 fee for a $100 case, because the parties are Indians with money in sight. Agent Kinney, however, should suffer a penalty for abusing the laws of his territory. Having in years past been a federal judge among the Mormons he has apparently lost all sense of civilized decency and respect.; Principal=John W. Brown

Having in years past been a federal judge among the Mormons he has apparently lost all sense of civilized decency and respect.; Principal=Mary Genick
