Biography* | The birthdate above was extracted from Jacob Hyre's pension application. Swisher lists his date of death alternately as 27 March 1841. W.B. Cutright: The first mill in what is now Upshur County was built in 1783 on Fink's run by Jacob "Shaking Jake" Hyre. Swisher, on the Claypole Rebellion (1781): most of the insurgents eventually were pardoned by the governor - the names of Rudolph and Leonard Hyre appear on a petition for clemency sent to the governor. Some of the rebel leaders are known to have escaped after the summer incident and before the pardon was granted. There may be some correlation between this fact and the fact that a Jacob and a John Hyre settled in the Fall of 1781 on the remote Buckhannon River. Jacob and John Hyre were members of the areas first Baptist Congregation which worshipped in a log structure build about 1814 on a hill above Fink's Run. Crude head and Footstones mark Jacob's grave in the cemetery by the site of the old church on today's Hall Road. During the Revolutionary War, Jacob Hyre served under George Jackson (the brother of his future son-in-law) as a Private Indian Spy. He was stationed at a Fort on the Buchannon River in Mongolia (now Lewis) County, Virginia between 1778 and 1783. Biography* | Mary Anna Jackson in "Life and Letters of General Thomas Jackson" writes: Elizabeth Cummins... was a handsome blonde, with the stature of a man, six feet in height, and as remarkable for strength of intellect as for beauty and physical vigor. She was well-educated, her father having been in sufficiently easy circumstances to own and rent out a public-house in London called "The Bold Dragoon," from which he derived a good income, and he was supposed to own landed estates in Ireland. After his death, his widow married her brother-in-law - a marriage which was so repulsive to her daughter that she could not become reconciled to it. Her step-father, who was also her uncle, one day aroused her indignation to such a pitch that with her powerful arm she hurled a silver tankard at his head, and then fled from her home. She scarcely missed her aim, it is supposed, for, young as she was - not more than fifteen or sixteen - she was not of a nature to do things by halves. He must have recovered (there is no record that he didn't) but Elizabeth took the opportunity to make her escape and bound her self in service for passage to America. She met her future husband, on board, but refused his proposals and, upon arriving in the Colonies, made her way to Maryland. John Jackson followed her, and eventually they were married in Calvert County Maryland. It is said that she never quailed at the sound of the war-whoop, and her voice was heard not only in soothing and cheering the women and children, but in inspiring the men to heroic resistance. John Hughes writes, in "Pioneers of West Virginia": The land upon which most of the town [Buckhannon] stands was originally owned by Elizabeth Cummins, who became the wife of John Jackson, and who sold the farm to John Patton. Edward Jackson in 1770, became the first settler. He was a son of John Jackson, who was the great-grandfather of "Stonewall" Jackson. Elizabeth Cummins Jackson is listed as a "Patriot" by the D.A.R. for defending Fort Jackson while her husband and older sons were away. She is buried in Jackson Cemetery on Phillipi Street in Clarksburg, West Virginia. The gravesite is marked (although the original stone in no longer there).

Biography* | On April 30th, 1774, Daniel Greathorse and other men murdered Cheif Logan's family on Yellow Creek approximately 150 miles NW of the Jackson cabin. Expecting the Indians to retaliate, the Jackson men took Elizabeth Cummins Jackson and the children of the family to a fort in the Tygart Valley which lay in a less exposed area to the east. Here, on July 10, Elizabeth Jackson gave birth to a son, Henry. Henry Jackson was married twice and had a total of (approximately) 25 children. Fourteen of the children were by his first wife (and our ancestor), Mary Hire. The next 11 were by his second wife, Elizabeth Shreve (whom he married on 24 April 1836). It is not certain that the 10th name listed above (John Henderson Brake) represents one child or two. It is also not clear whether the 14th child [Cecelia (Miller)] was from the first or second marriage. At any rate, names have been found for only 10 of the apparent 11 children from his marriage to Elizabeth. They are: 1. Decatur 2. Samuel Dexter 3. James Alonzo 4. Marion Orlando 5. Melissa (Lowe) 6. Roxana 7. George Washington 8. Artemeshia (Martinee) 9. Clispo Mero 10. Draper Camden. A slightly different list of children are provided by Roy Bird Cook in his volume on the Jacksons: Children of Henry and Mary Hyer: 1. Esther/1801 2. Elizabeth Permelia/1802 3. William Vandevater/1804 4. Hyer/1806 5. Edward C./1808 6. Mariah/1810 7. Henry, Jr./1813 8. Amanda Melissa/1816 9. Rachel Cecelia/1817 10. John Henderson/1820 11. Jacob/1822 12.Ulysses/1824 13. Mary Sophia/1827 Children of Henry and Elizabeth Shreves: 1. Samuel Dexter/1838 2. James Alonzo/1840 3. Marion Orlando/1841 4. Melissa/1842 5. Roxana Columbia/1844 6. George Washington/1845 7. Artemesha/1847 8. Clipso Meris/1848 9. Gideon Draper Camden/1852 Henry had two nephews (sons of his brother, Edward... by his second wife) whose names one comes across frequently in West Virginia Historical literature... Cummins Jackson and Return Meigs Jackson. Another son of Edward's (by his first marriage) was Jonathan, who married Julia Neale and was the father of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Henry Jackson was a surveyor... and was county surveyor of Randolph County in 1793. He had charge of the Banks land survey. Edward Conrad Smith, in "A History of Lewis County, West Virginia" writes: Henry Jackson was one of the most widely known surveyors of Western Virginia during this period. He went into the forests with only one or two assistants and surveyed thousands of acres. Often the work was not done thoroughly, as in the case of the Banks survey which he completed far from the spot, after having been compelled to flee for his life from the Indians. The only data which he had secured was his beginning corner, from which it could be seen that the boundary line of the survey would cross Leading creek three times. Doctor Loyal Young's Semi-Centenary Sermon "Fifty Years In the Wilderness" says (referring to the French Creek settlers): their being great trouble about the titles to the lands bought by these early settlers, an emigration set in, commencing about the year 1830, to the Western States, which took away nearly, if not altogether, on half of the people. Great discouragement was felt by those who remained about making improvements. Some had to purchase their farms for the second and third times. This land trouble which caused so much trouble for the French Creek settlers resulted from overlapping surveys. Surveyors in those days, particularly Henry Jackson who did much surveying in Upshur and adjoining section (sic) seldom ran their lines, but from some starting point made their plat or made plats of thousands of acres, send (sic) them to Richmond and they would come back duly patented. These surveys often would overlap, different persons would have patents for the same lands. In the French Creek region there were three overlapping surveys; (1) The Ely and Booth Survey (2) The McCall Survey; and (3) The Bond Survey. The Ely and Booth Survey, beginning near Ellmore, ran westward across the country passing some distance south of Hinkleville and including practically all of the county south of this line. Within this survey were the other two mentioned above. The overlapping surveys plagued other parts in Upshur County as well as the French Creek community. West Virginia Heritage: In 1780 H. Jackson lived in Buckhannon where the old Fort had been, about 1 1/2 miles below town. Henry Jackson's will reads as follows: Upshur County, West Virginia Will Book A, Page 5 November 20th 1848 The last will and testament of Henry Jackson, I being certain that Deth is the Lot of all men. Biography* | Pal Erlandson cleared the land for Hjerkinn Sondre. In 1640 he divided the land between two sons... Lars Palsen (Hjerkinn) and Erland Palsen...both of whom are direct ancestors. Bygdebok For Folldal: Hjerkinn Sondre (Systugu Hjerkinn) The name Hjerkinn is supposed to come from Old Norse Hjardkinn, "hjard" meaning "hjord" (flock, herd) and "kinn" meaning mountain wall, and this might be the correct interpretation. There is space for a large herd under the steep Geitberget. The pronunciation in Folldall is Skjaerkjinn. In the beginning there was only one farm. The first operator one knows about was Pal Erlandson, married to Gunnhild. About 1640 he divided the farm into two parts. The oldest son, Erland, got the old farm, whereas the son Lars, moved out and cleared land for Nordistugu Hjerkinn.

Biography* | Bygdebok For Folldal: Farm No. 134, Subdivision No. 6 Folldal Sondre (Ovre Uppistugu) On the tax rolls from the year 1600 on one finds Halvor Folldalen (Halvor Bardson Bergseng). At that time the farm was not divided, but Halvor's sons, Tjostol and Bard, each got their portion of the farm. Probate records from 1688 and later on indicate the Tjostol got Uppistugu. On 31 August 1688 there was a settlement of Tjostol's estate (he was dead). The settlement of estate was held for his wife, Gunhild Larsdatter, and their five children. The children's inheritance should remain with the mother until they became of age, and the father's brother, Bard Folldalen (Bard Halvorson) was the guardian.

Biography* | Erland Palsen took the farm over from his father. In turn, his son Pal (born 1634) became operator of the farm. Later history of the farm: On 16 September, 1947 Hjerkinn Mountain Cottage (Fjellstue) was separated from Hjerkinn farm and was given farm No. 1, sub-division 8, and tax 0,25. The heirs after that, on 12 August 1950, gave deed to A/S Hjerkinn Fjellsute (A/S = Incorporated). The Department of Defense found that the mountain plateau to the interior towards Snohetta was well suited for practicing with canons. Thereby that fine tourist area was destroyed, and the number of tourists going to Fjellstua was sharply reduced. At the Eidsiva Circuit Court the Department of Defense was then fined, having to pay 125,000 kroner in compensation for lost tourist business. It is to be hoped that the roar of canons some time will stop, so that the mountain plateau once again might be used for its natural purpose, as a tourist attraction.

Biography* | Bygdebok For Folldal: Farm No. 151 Subdivision # 2 Slaen Sore The man who cleared land in Slaen was Per Erlandson Systugu Hjerkinn. He first cleared land for a home for himself in Nordre Atndalen about 1685, but had bad luck with the cattle (mentioned under Eiriksrud). After that he was given permission by Captain Reichwein to clear a place at Langslaen, as long as he did not get in the way of his brother, Syver Erlandson at Borkhus. An older brother, Pal Erlandson, had Systugu Hjerkinn and was a mountain hosteler there. The lease is dated 13 June, 1690. He paid a shoe tax in 1711. The son, Erland, married the 24 years younger Ingeborg Rydningsoen. After a few years of married life Erland and his hired man (young boy), Johannes Lindse, were up in the mountains doing something or other, and he lost his life in a mysterious way. The widow married the hired young boy two years later.

Biography* | Translation From "Bygdebok For Folldal": Farm No. 120, Subdivision No. 1, NORDRE (NORTHERN) HUSUM (Nordistugun Husum) After the farms were moved from the first building site on the east side of Hudbekken just across from the present state highway, Nordre Husum was rebuilt on the hillside on the west side of the brook, and somewhat higher up than Sore (Southern) Husum. The time the land was cleared is estimated to be 1645-50. The first operator must have been Eirik Siverson, who at the counting of cattle in 1657 had 2 horses, 4 head of cattle, 4 goats, and 4 sheep. His father was Sjugurd (Siver) Oleson Norstegard, and the family tree starts with him... In the land register for 1668 it is stated: The owner is Capt. Reichwein, tax rate of 1 pound of smor (butter), the operator is Erich Siffuersen, land value 1 skin, seeds 1/2 barrel grain, feeds 14 head of cattle and 2 horses, pays tax of 3 ort, tithing 1/2 settung, naval defences 1 skilling and for a grist mill 8 skilling. There are woods for household use and good grazing land. The pasture is "temmelig" (so- so). Eirik's wife was Marit Halvorsdatter who died in 1677. Eirik was dead before that. Settlement of the estate only showed 57 rd. 3 ort on 7 November 1677. This looks somewhat strange, when remembering that in 1668 there were 2 horses and 14 head of cattle.

Biography* | Translation From "Bygdebok For Folldal": Farm Number 50 Subdivision # 1 RYHAUG In 1762 Jon Simenson Kjolle (53-1), a miner, gave Peder Oleson Frank permission to clear land for a farm here. Peder was a brother of Ole Oleson Frank, who cleared land for Frankmoen (55-19). Peder was married to Siri Eriksdatterr. They sold the farm in 1771 to Avle Simenson Brennryen (55-22). He died the same year, and the farm was sold in 1781 to Ole Engebretson Flatas for 100 rd. Ole Flatas and his father, Engebret, wre miners at the Baugsberg Mine in Alvdal. Engebret was born 1680, died 1764, and had Flatasplassen (the Flatas holding) in Alvdal. We have not had any luck in finding out, where these fellows came from. At Kvikne there is one named Ole Engebretson Flatas, operator of Rikard-studgu during the 1730-40's, but this is another fellow. However, it is reasonable to assume that Engebret and Ole Flatas came from the Kvikne Mine.4

Trond Oleson Bustad1,2
M, b. 1725, d. 1789
Biography* | Translation From "Bygdebok For Folldal" Farm No. 114, Subdivision No. 1 BUSTAD The first man to clear the land came from Bustad in Skajak and took this name in use at the place he was clearing. One might assume that the holding was leased in 1753, but is uncertain to whom it was done. In any case, it was one of the larger holdings with a lease of 2-3 rd. It might have been the Oppdal holding, No. 15, Ole Ellingson, the leaseholder, paying (taxes) of 2 ort. Ole is not mentioned in 1763 on the list of workers at the mine. He must be dead or moved from there. On the other hand, Trond Oleson Bustad is mentioned as a miner. To start with the houses were located down by Folla, but the big flood (Ofsen) in 1789 made it clear tht it was safest to move farther up the slope, where the houses have stood until this day. The soil was easy to work and had a good location. The main road went right by the houses, therefore there was contact with all the traffic on it. In each generation there were many, also strong, children. The daughters got married to men on the farms in Folldal and Alvdal. The sons moved away, and one can find a great many descendants in Sweden and America. In 1865 there were twenty people living on the farm. One hundred years later there are none left on the farm. Gammel-Bustaden used to say: "The Bustad Family and Vehl-Anders-ekta (a gypsy family) are of the same size, they reach out over half of the world". Trond Oleson Bustad gets to be the first farmer one knows of, and his son Lars took over after Trond.
