MRS MARY LEONARD

Shock From Fall Hastened Death of Aged Resident

Mrs. Mary Leonard, widow of Samuel Leonard, died at her home in this city, Wednesday afternoon, from infirmiies of age. She had fallen a week previous and the general shock to her system hastened her death.

Mary A.E. Hill, daugher of William P. and Elizabeth (Poage) Hill, was born in Pocahontas county, West Virginia, on Februay 14, 1852, and died in Jamesport, Missouri, January 29, 1936, aged 83 years, 11 months and 15 days.

She came to Missouri in 1855 with her parents who settled on a place one mile west of Jamesport when this section was only a stretch of prairie.

On December 21, 1870, she was united in marriage to Samuel Leonard, also living west of Jamesport. They had no children of their own but took care of several at different times. Mrs. Lucy Johnson of Gallatin stayed with them five years in her girlhood. They reared Addie Kimball, a niece, from babyhood. She died in 1902. They also took into their home two nephews, Claude Henderson of Durango, Colo., and Ray Henderson of Jamesport, and two nieces, Mrs. Karo DeVorss of Kansas City and Mrs. Tom Alderton of Newton, Kan.

Mrs. Leonard is the last of a family of eight children. Her brother, Geo. W. Hill, next last surviving member of the family, died in this city on April 2, 1932, aged 89 years and 21 days. Her husband died May 28, 1834, aged 87 years. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins in this community.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard lived on a farm west of Jamesport during their early married life, then moved into town, later returned to the farm for some years, and about twenty years ago built the present home and moved back into town. Since the husband's death, Mrs. Leonard has been looked after by her nephew, Ray Henderson, with Mrs. Belle Whitaker having been in the home the last year.

Funeral services will be held at the M.E. Church South on Friday afternoon, January 31, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.J. Chappell.

Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.4,2

SAMUEL LEONARD

Aged Resident Succumbs to Paralysis After Week's Illness

Samuel Leonard died at his home in this city Monday forenoon, May 28, following a stroke of paralysis a week before, aged 87 years, 6 months and 28 days. Several years ago he had suffered a light stroke of paralysis and had been in failing health since that time.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Roberson Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. A.W. Darter, pastor of the M.E. church South, and burial was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

The following account of his life was read at the funeral service:

Samuel Leonard, son of Michael and Ruth Jarrett Leonard, was born at Lewisburg, Greenbrier county, W. Va., October 30, 1846. He became an orphan at twelve years of age and was reared in the home of his grandfather. He had a half-sister, Mrs. George Hill, of Jamesport, Mo., and a half-brother, Willie Leonard, Lewisburg, W. Va., both deceased.

At the age of twenty-two he came to Missouri and settled on a farm west of Jamesport. He was married to Mary E. Hill on December 21, 1870, who survives him. They had no children, but Mrs. Lucy Johnson, Gallatin, stayed in their home five years in her girlhood. They reared Addie Kimball, a niece, from babyhood. She died in 1902. They also took into their home two nephews Claude Henderson, Durango, Colo., and Raymond Henerson, Jamesport, Mo., and two nieces, Mrs. Karo DeVorss, Kansas City, and Mrs. Tom Alderton, Newton, Kan.

Mr. Leonard was a retired farmer and stock raiser and had resided in Jamesport for the last eighteen years. His home was most hospitable and he was always glad to help those in need.1

Death*29 Dec 2011 Faribault, Rice Co., Minnesota; Ralph Keith Stokes, age 86, of Frontenac, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Keystone Communities in Faribault, from complications of congestive heart failure. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory (607 2 nd Ave. N.W.) in Faribault, with the Rev. Joanna Mitchell, associate pastor of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Faribault, officiating. Interment will be held on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the funeral home from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. An additional visitation will be held on Friday at the Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Waterloo from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Ralph Keith Stokes, the youngest son of Ralph K. and Lillian (Hillock) Stokes, was born on February 18, 1925 in Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from Orange High School in Waterloo. Keith was united in marriage to Jean Ann Hartman on February 17, 1950 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa. After high school, Keith operated a dry cleaning business for 12 years. Keith then became a licensed realtor in 1957 and later acquired an independent insurance agency in 1965, which he owned and operated along with his real estate company. He later sold the insurance company, but continued selling real estate right up until his demise. Keith was past president of the Waterloo Cedar Falls Board of Realtors and served on many local and state Board Committees. He was named Iowa’s Realtor of the year in 1967. After losing his oldest daughter Karen to suicide, Keith started and was facilitator, from 1982 until 1990, for a Suicide Survivor’s grief support group that met once a month for friends and families that have lost someone to suicide. He was a member of the American Association of Sociology and attended many of their National Conventions. He was named Coordinator for a Government Suicide Prevention Program for the state of Iowa and surrounding states in 1985-1986. Keith also appeared on the Phil Donahue T.V. Show in 1985 to speak on the subject of young women and suicide. He was also interviewed by Good Morning America and several other radio stations to talk about the subject of suicide. Keith also presented suicide preventions programs to churches, services clubs, high schools, at the University of Northern Iowa and also held continuing education classed at Hawkeye Tech on suicide grief and preventions. Keith researched multiple sibling suicides in four Midwest states and presented his findings to the American Association of Suicidology. This study was done in partnership with a clinical psychiatrist who was also a sibling survivor of suicide. Keith semi-retired and moved to his family lake home on the shores of Lake Pepin in the historic, not incorporated Village of Old Frontenac. Keith had some unusual hobbies. He enjoyed mowing the grass, planting shrubs, trees and flowers. He became quite the landscaper with great canvas to work with. Keith also relaxed by shopping at fine men’s clothing stores and always maintained an impressive wardrobe, as he loved to dress up. On the flip side, he also loved working in his workshop building things for his home. Keith loved all family get togethers and thoroughly enjoyed playing Santa for the grandchildren when they were young. His sense of humor, joy for life, joy for his family, joy for his working and producing, joy of helping upwards of four generations buy a home are just a few of his trademarks. He always just wanted to provide the best for his family, and this he always did. Keith is survived by his wife, Jean Ann; his children, Lynne (Bruce) Hansen of Prior Lake and Julie Trattles of Walters, MN; by his grandchildren and their families, Jennifer (Tate) Hallstrom and their son Lance, Jillian (Eric) Specht and their children Ava and Jace, Ellen Hansen, Brianna Trattles and Matthew Trattles and by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Karen Wisner, his sister Zelma Latner and by his brother Eugene Stokes.3

F, b. circa 1788
Death*
Biography* William Price: Mrs Moore, old "Aunt Teenie," as she was so familiarly called by the neighbor's, was one of the most helpful and benevolenlt of persons in seasons of sickness or bereavement. She spared no pains day or night at all seasons, in vernal showers, in summer's heat, in autumn storms, or winters snows, Aunt Tenie's skillful hand would be one of the first to bring relief when pain and anguish furrowed a neighbor's brow, or where the death angel was heard knocking at the door of some one's life. Her religious proclivities were decidedly and very positively presbyterian.2
