Misc*1975 Excerpt from a letter dated October 26, 1975 from Harriett Herman Figi, Seattle:

THE HERMAN FAMILY

The year before my Dad passed away, he asked Bert and me if we wanted to take a walk with him to Grandpa's place and especially the woods behind the homestead with its rail fence. He told us how the Indians would come and bargain and steal. He told of Grandpa walking to Madison with not only his business but everyone else's which they would bring to him and he would take care of these legal things for them. He said that Grandpa used many of the Indian trails and had learned to read direction by trees and noted tall straight ones amongst all the others for landmarks.

Mother told me that when Grandpa and many others were off to the war that it was a real struggle for the women to defend end feed and clothe their children. She said Grandma would empty the featherbed, put a hoop and a long pole on the opening, and take it down to the Cedar Creek to catch suckers. She was able to get bushels of them when they were running. Later she would wash the feather ticking, put in the feathers, and be ready for the cold winter. A fascinating story of her ingenuity. She was so tiny. I remember her well with the little snood over her hair. Also I remember all the handkerchiefs she had in her bureau that she received through all the years.

That long table in the dining room was really used. Of course, ours in my home was probably used even more. Five children, plus cousins, especially Harvey, Art, Clarence, and sometimes George, plus all our friends and relatives, and buyers for posts, wood, sausage, plus hunters by the dozen for coon hunting, with dogs in sheds, barns, outside cellar stairs all yelping to go. I remember tree cutting in our hardwoods and cedar woods. Also ice skating with torches from our place through the woods to Cedarburg one time. There had been a flood and then a deep freeze. I couldn't go as I was too young but I watched and watched until I couldn't see any more torches.

No Christmas tree will ever be as beautiful to me as our full cedar trees with lots of tinsel and multi-colored candles. Each candle had to be precisely placed for safety sake. It was enjoyed by the older children as well as the parents. We would go to Grandpa's church on Christmas Eve and receive a bag of goodies. That was the highlight of it all

Excerpt from a letter dated September 24, 1974 from Harriett Herman Figi, Seattle Regarding the Andrew Herman Farm

Our farm is out of the Herman family for the first time in 78 years. I will always love that farm and the thousands of good memories. Many gatherings, much fun, food, and arguments. Harvey and Arthur were there all the time. Arthur helped with the summer farm work for many years, I've have been back many times and we always drive all the roads around there. We look at Grandpa's farm and remember the lovely orchard with its many kinds of apples, situated on a gentle slope back of the house next to the woods with its rail fence. This woods, Schmahl's, was filled with dogtooth violets, trilliums, grass flowers, blood root, wild geranium, and spring anemones. Then too I recall the apple and vegetable bins in the cellar. I always reached for the russet apples and snow apples.

This is one of the pages of our history and I would not have wanted it to be anywhere else. I’m sure I must have picked a wagonload of violets in my time. I would take a basket and place containers of water in it and put the flowers in them so they wouldn't wilt. Then there was your old dog, Sport, who would come home on Dad's wagon now and then. So many wonderful memories.8

Biography* Anna Herman, apparently, could not write. She signed by mark to an affidavit in the pension records for Christopher Herman... and a claim form specifically indicates that she "does not write."
Biography Neal Degner's history of the Faber family includes the following, written by Viola Steybe:

My grandmother, Anna Elizabeth Herman, was small of stature with a round face and figure, but not plump. She wore her gray straight hair combed back smoothly, braided, the braid twisted into a knot and covered with a snood. She spent most of her time sitting in an armchair in her bedroom, except in the summer time when it was nice enough to sit outdoors on the porch. She walked lamely with a cane, shuffling her right foot. Her right arm and hand were quite useless, the result of a stroke which she must have suffered during what we now call middle age. She must have had a busy life with so large a family. On April 29, 1902, she and Grandfather celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. I imagine that must have been a large gathering of the family and a happy occasion. She lived until May 27, 1916, a week after her 81st birthday. Grandpa lived about the same length of time, passing away less that four months before his 82nd birthday.2

Death*27 May 1916 Jackson, Washington Co., Wisconsin, USA; Obituary of Anna Faber from West Bend Democrat May 31, 1916:

Mrs. Christopher Herman Mrs. Christopher Herman, an old and highly respected resident of the town of Jackson, departed into sleep that knows no waking last Saturday evening, May 27, 1916 at 11 o'clock. Death was due to old age, she having reached the age of 81 years and 7 days.
Anna E. Faber was born in Germany, May 20, 1835, came to America with her father when she was 12 years old, and settled at Jackson. She was married to Christopher Herman on April 21, 1852. Her husband predeceased her in death seven years ago. She was the mother of thirteen children, twelve of whom are living. They are, Anna (Mrs. Ernst Koepke) of Chippewa Falls, Nic. of Jackson, Frank on the homestead; Margareth (Mrs. Henry Pautz), Elizabeth (Mrs. H. Heidner) and Catherine (Mrs. G. Baer) of Milwaukee; Mary (Mrs. Gus Benike) of Hartford; Carolina (Mrs. Theo Frank) of Athens; Andrew of Jackson; Bertha (Mrs. John Koester) of Polk; Jacob of Milwaukee and Chr. on the homestead.

The funeral will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Reformed church, Rev. Kuecherer having charge of the sad last rites, with internment in the Last Rest cemetery.

Mrs. Herman was the mother of a large family and it is vain to attempt to measure the loss of a mother to her children. She was known for her generosity and none ever entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of genuine hospitality. Old age did not diminish her unselfish solicitude for her friends and loved ones. Sixteen years ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis which lamed her side, and from which she never fully recovered. She bore her illness without complaining and was always cheerful and happy in spit of her affliction to the bereaved relatives we extend our sympathy.

Ran for Clerk of the Circuit Court for Washington Counting in 1930 on the Democratic ticket. . His publicity ticket states the following:
Born in 1878 in the town of Jackson, Washington county, and have been a taxpayer in that town for many years. Graduated from West Bend high school in 1896. Taught school for three terms in the county. Later took up farming, in which I am still engaged. Was chairman of supervisors o the town of Jackson for five years. Was appointed clerk at the death of the preceding town clerk, and holding the office unopposed to the present time. Was candidate for office o the Clerk of the Circuit Court in 1926 and received 153 votes to my opponents 41 votes in my home town, which is the strongest Republican town in the county. With this splendid endorsement by my townsfolk, I feel that I can conscientiously ask for you support.1

Note*1978 THE HERMAN FAMILY-HOMESTEAD

The Herman Homestead was located on the north side of Highway 60, the east-west road which is the Main Street of the Village of Jackson, Wisconsin. It was a half mile east from the intersection in the village of Highway 60 with the north-south road now celled Western Avenue.

The farm consisted of two parts. The homestead was built well away from the road on the south slope of a small hill with a block long lane leading to it. The original farm covered 40 acres, most of which was cultivated with the exception of a small woods in the southeast corner next to the road. On April 28, 1852 it was passed on by Nicolaus to his son, Christopher, with certain considerations ? listed on the attached paper. Later, another 4-0 acres were added. These were across the road and south of the farm and bordering it which belonged to Christopher's younger brother, Nicolaus. About two thirds of the land was cultivated and the rest was woods with the Cedar Creek running through it. A lane to the south 40 was also acquired. The 80 acres were passed on to Christoph by his father, Christopher, for certain considerations to the family at about the turn of the century.

Originally the house was a log house. In the late 1800s, it was rebuilt and part of it was covered with clapboards and the inside renovated to become a very large living room and big bedroom on the first floor and three bedrooms upstairs. A frame addition was built which housed the kitchen, pantry, wash room, large dining room, and three bedrooms upstairs. For many years, the house was painted a light tan with reddish brown, trim on the outside.

A "summer kitchen" with a woodshed stood across the driveway to the south of the house and it was used in the summer and when the weather permitted it. Later, it was used only in the winter time when slaughtering was done. Finally, it was used only for storage. Other buildings were the large barn of weathered gray unpainted wood, a two story building painted red with white trim which had a work shop and a shed - later the garage - on the ground floor and the granary upstairs, a smoke house, milk shed, corn crib, hen house, and a pig pen.

There was a large orchard back of the house with a great variety of apple trees, also cherry, mulberry, and plum trees. A large garden on the west side of the house had large beds of asparagus, strawberries, raspberries and rhubarb. Vegetables of every kind were grown as well as many flowers.

The farm was sold in 1933 to Andrew Loduha, the neighbor to the south, with the understanding that Christoph and Elizabeth could live in the house for very low rent for as long as they wished. It was home to them until 1963 when they moved into the Cedar Lake Home, West Bend, Wisconsin. The house stood vacant until 1972 when it was torn down as were all the rest of the buildings soon afterward. The farm now belongs to Andrew Loduha, Jr. since the death of his father.

My mother told me that Grandpa was a kind and good natured man. I am sure she was right he must have been very fond of her. I am the proud owner of a small rocking chair which he bought for ? at West Bend. I believe he went there by train and I was told he carried the chair home, walking the eight long miles. He was at least 77 years old when I was torn in 1904. My brother, Christopher, used the chair too; also my two sons, and now their boys use it when they come to visit.

I have heard the story that when Grandfather learned another man wanted the same piece of land he hoped to own, he hiked to Madison to claim it and arrived ahead of the other ran who had gone by horse and buggy.

I remember his white hair and long white beard. I remember walking with him down the lane to the mail box. I remember the treats of candy he brought hone for me whenever he went to the village. Also I remember his funeral which was held outdoors because so many relatives and friends cane. He died July 19, 1909. I recall being with cousins at a window in an upstairs bedroom looking down on the flag covered coffin while the service was being conducted. He and Grandma are buried in the Last Hone Cemetery adjoining the Friedens United Church of Christ in the Town of Jackson on the corner where Highway 4-5 is intersected by the Cedar Creek Road about a mile north of Highway 60. His sons Nickolaus, Frank, Andrew and daughter Bertha Koester are nearby; also some of his grandchildren. My father, Christoph, and mother, Elizabeth, are buried there too in another section of the cemetery. Also his father and mother- the first of this Herman family that we know about-Nicolaus and Maria Elizabeth-are buried here near to the church, as well as his brother, Henry. The inscriptions on the weathered headstones are hard to read.

My grandmother, Anna Elisabeth Herman, was small of stature with a round face and figure, but not plump. Her right arm and hand were quite useless, the result of a stroke which she had suffered during what we now call late middle age. She must have had a busy life with so large a family. On April 29, 1902, she and Grandfather celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. I imagine that must have been a large gathering of the family and a very happy occasion. She lived until May 27, 1916, a week after her 8lst birthday.

Grandpa lived about the same length of time, passing away less than four months before his 82nd birthday.

During their long lives, they must have had much happiness, some sorrow, some troubles, and many rewards for a full life well spent.

Viola Herman Steybe 1978

THE HERMAN FAMILY

According to the passport, my great-grandfather, Nicolaus Herman, came from Prussia, Germany, from a place called Argental. I haven't been able to find it on a map, but I am quite sure it must be in the area of Coblenz as the passport vas issued in that city on March 30, 1846. Application for it seems to have been made March 3, 1846 at Rheinkoellen (Cologne). An account of the family accompanies the application which is written in the old German script and I can read very little of it. Nicolaus is described as 47 years old at the time-born in 1799 at Riesveiler, a Protestant, 5 feet 3 inches tall, brown hair with some gray, small mouth, gray eyes, and a pointed nose and chin. With him came his wife, Maria Elizabeth, nee Klumb, and six children, 2 sons and 4 daughters. Grandfather Christopher Herman was the oldest of the children, 18 years of age, born November 2, 1827. The others were Maria Catharine, 16; Maria Margaretha,? Maria Elisabetha, 13; Nicolaus 10; and Anna Elisabeths 6 3/4,; according to the record on the passport.

With them came a 26 year old man named Frank Reis and his wife who had lived at Simmero, a city about 4-0 miles south of Coblenz, in the Uunsruck area. They sailed from Antwerp (Belguim), on April 15, 1846. On Nicolaus' application, for naturalization made in Milwaukee County, Territory of Wisconsin, dated June 29, 1846, he stated that they arrived at New York in June. On it, he renounced allegiance to William I, then King of Prussia. It seems they came directly to Wisconsin to what is now called Jackson, probably because some of the Reis family had already settled there and the families were related. I have heard it was called Reisville in early times.

Grandfather Christopher Hermann filed intention of becoming a citizen on May 5, 1856. Two of his friends, who were already citizens, Henry Heckendorff and Philipp Mayer, vouched for his residency in the United States for five years and in Wisconsin for one year which were requirements. He became a naturalized citizen in Circuit Court at West Bend, Washington County, Wisconsin, on October 13, 1858.

On April 29, 1852, he married Anna Elizabeth Faber. She was not quite 17 years old, her birthday being May 20, 1835. They had 13 children and all grew up except Henry who died as a child at about 1? years old. They were Anna (Koepke), Nicolaus, Frank, Mary (Pautz), Elizabeth (Heidner), Katherine (Baer), Henry, Margaret (Benike), Caroline (Frank), Andrew, Bertha (Koester), Jacob, and Christoph.

One of the reasons so many families emigrated from Germany was to avoid compulsory military service. It was ironic that so soon after becoming a citizen in the United States, Grandfather was drafted to fight in the Civil War. The draft notice from the Provost Marshall's Office of the 4th District, State of Wisconsin, is dated October 11, 1864. It ordered him to report on October 26, 1864, at Fond du Lac, the place of rendezvous. It was customary at that time to hire some man to go in your stead if one could be found and if one could afford it. I've heard that some men were hired for as little as $100. Although he had a family, Grandfather had to go. Food for the army was scarce and many times the soldiers went hungry. To impress me with my good fortune when I would not eat something at the table, my mother would tell me how Grandfather won a fight with another man for a cold boiled potato and quickly ate it as he ran off with it.

I know nothing about his war record except that twice he narrowly escaped being wounded - once when a bullet went through the crown of his hat and another time when one tore the sleeve of his coat but missed his arm. I remember seeing his uniform which was found in the attic when wiring for electricity was put in the old house. It must have been placed there by my grandmother and forgotten, as my parents never used the attic because it was very inaccessible. The uniform was moth eaten and full of holes and it would have been unwise to try to save it. My mother cut off the buttons and some cord rod I still have them as a remembrance. The old GAR brass buttons are still shiny.

My father told me Grandpa fought in Virginia and was at Appomattox where General Lee finally surrendered, ending the war. According to the Discharge Paper, he was a private in Company F, 6th Regiment of Wisconsin Vet. Infantry Volunteers, enrolled on October 11, 1864 for one year or for the duration of the war, discharged on June 6, 1865 by order of the War Department, dated May 3. It states his age as 37 years, his height 5 feet, 6 inches, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and occupation a farmer. His name then was spelled Christopher Herman.2
