Lois A. (Burnett) Buxton, at 100 years of age, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday morning, Nov. 23, 2004, at Hillside Manor in Missoula.

Lois Buxton was born in Hamilton on July 26, 1904. Her parents, James V. Burnett and Etta Sanders Burnett were early pioneers in the Bitterroot Valley.

Lois's grandfather, John Justus Burnett, her father, James V. Burnett and her oldest brother, Leonard Burnett, were all building contractors and were instrumental in the construction of the majority of the original buildings at the University of Montana in Missoula.

Lois's mother, Etta Sanders Burnett, was a young girl that took refuge with her family inside the security of Fort Owen when the early settlers thought that the Indians were on the war path prior to and during the time when Chief Joseph and his tribe came through the Bitterroot Valley as they were on the way to that tragic destination at the battle of The Big Hole.

Lois received her education through the Stevensville school system, then met the love of her life, Charles Marlin Buxton. They were married in September of 1922. This new Buxton family lived in Stevensville until Marlin Buxton accepted a position with the Ford Motor Company in Seattle.

They returned to the western Montana area in 1939 and subsequently operated the Montana Dairy Supply. When they approached retirement age, they transferred their hobby of antiques into an ongoing antique business that they operated from their home in Hamilton.

Lois's husband, Marlin passed away in November of 1971.

Lois Buxton was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, three sisters and one granddaughter.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Marlin Buxton, and his wife, Isabelle, of Missoula, and her son, Jim, and his wife, Marjorie, of Kalispell, plus five grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Lois Buxton was a sweet, dear person that came from early pioneer stock. She lived a long and a good life but she will be missed by all those that loved her so.

Services are pending at a later date at the Dowling Funeral Home in Hamilton.2

Milit-Beg*1941 Joined the Army Air coprs in 1941 and became a pilot of the P-51 fighter plane. He had overseas orders 2 or 3 different times but just before shipping date his orders would be changed and he was sent back into the training command. He was subsequently transferred into the training command. He was then transferred into te Thunderbird Group, the precision flying team for the Air Corp and it was then we decided he had better get out while he still had his neck in one piece. If our figures are correct there are only 2 men left out their original group of 28, on of them being Marlin Jr., the rest of them "went in" (crashed) while flying.2
Death*15 Sep 2011 Missoula Co., Montana; MISSOULA - Charles Marlin Buxton Jr., loving father and grandfather, passed away at his home Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, of natural causes.

He was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Stevensville. The family shared many fond memories during those early years with the Dowling and Flanagin cousins. The Burnett relatives on his mother's side were also a part of those family gatherings. His grandfather, James Virgil Burnett was instrumental in the construction of a majority of the original buildings at the University of Montana and most significantly the clock tower that remains on the campus today.

During his young years, Marlin began to nurture his passion with planes and flying by hanging around the local airfields, which offered him an occasional ride with local pilots. He flew so often as a passenger early on that he developed the knowledge of how a plane should fly before he actually became a pilot. As that passion deepened through the years, it was only fitting that he enlist with the Army Air Corps in World War II, which began an extensive military career. It came to fruition in the '40s when he flew the P-40 out of Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. In 1945, he began flying his beloved P-51 Mustang as a member of the 362nd fighter group flying submarine reconnaissance missions off the coast of Florida during the war. He also flew along the Gulf of Mexico toward Cuba and ferried planes within the United States for wartime deployment. At about the same time the war ended, he began flying with the first large air shows which were offered by the Army Air Corps Precision Flying Team later to be known as the Thunderbirds. Iowa and New Mexico were just a few of the many states in which the team provided their acrobatic air shows. His military pursuit continued from 1947 to 1953. During this time, he served as a an instructor with the Civil Air Patrol, a liaison officer with the Air Force Academy and a purchasing and procurement officer at Hill Air Force?Base in Utah. From 1960 to 1966 he was a member of the 9437th Air Force Reserve Recovery Squadron in Missoula serving as an officer in education, training and purchasing. He was a devoted lifetime patriot who proudly wore his blue Santa Ana Air Base hat wherever he went.

In 1948, he returned home to the Bitterroot marrying his high school sweetheart, Isabella Fullerton. The young family made their home in Hamilton from 1949 to 1965 while Marlin managed a dairy equipment business.?Then in 1966 a move was made to Anaconda where he was an executive director for a government agency. The American Dairy Association then offered him its state managerial position from 1970 to 1975 which he accepted and worked out of Butte. In 1976 he re-entered the private business sector when he and his son opened their first jewelry store known as The Jem Shop and Custom Jewelry. Today, there are two stores located in Missoula. At the age of 87, Marlin continued to work full time and dedicated himself to maintaining customer satisfaction. Marlin was happiest when given the opportunity to share his extensive gemological knowledge with anyone that would listen. Those who knew him well, soon realized if they had the time and interest it could evolve into a full afternoon of education.

Marlin's formal education included Washington State in Pullman from 1946 to 1948 and in 1966 further education through the University of Missouri.

Marlin cared deeply about helping others and lived his life as a true philanthropist. His family often lovingly referred to him as the Padre, the Professor and the Grandest of Raconteurs.

He is survived by his brother, Jim Buxton (Marjorie Jo) of Seattle; his children, Charles Marlin Buxton III (Linda) of Missoula and Cyrene Buxton McMenamy (Joe) of Great Falls. Surviving grandchildren include Megan McMenamy of Bozeman, Conner Buxton of California, Shane McMenamy of Great Falls and Madeline Buxton Parr (Dillon) of Missoula. He has one great-grandchild, Cameron Buxton. An upcoming wedding will soon include Linda Ann Chin to the Buxton family circle.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Lois and Marlin Buxton Sr. and his loving wife Isabella Fullerton Buxton.

Dad, may you always have that tall glass of iced tea with Sweet and Low and of course your occasional martini, shaken, not stirred with just a touch of olive juice. We will be with you on another day but not yet - not yet.

Donations in Marlin's memory may be made to the Montana Alzheimer's Chapter, 310 11th Ave. N., Billings, MT?59101.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Fifth St. W., in Missoula. A?reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

A?private burial service will be scheduled at a later date.4

The service was conducted by Rev. Jesse F. Taintor of Ripon, Wis., a former pastor and close friend of the family. He was assisted by the Rev. A.O. Stevens, present pastor of the Congregational church, in which Mrs. Hubbard always retained her interest and membership.

Jennie Carver-Hubbard was born at Nunda, N.Y. , March 14, 1833. In November, 1856 she became the bride of Henry A. Hubbard and with himi came to Walworth county, making their first home on a farm in the town of Spring Prairie. From there the family came to Elkhorn and Mr. Hubbard was engaged in the hardware business for a time. Later they purchased and moved to a farm in Lafayette where they spent many years, and wher their younger son, Ralph C. Hubbard now resides. Their later years were passed in Elkhorn where both enjoyed a well-earned leisure until Mr. Hubbard's death seven years ago. Since then Mrs. Hubbard has resided with her four children, making her home the greater part of the time with her daughter in Janesville.

Their children are Fred C., of Elgin, Ill.; Ralph C., on the home farm in Lafayette; Mrs. Marion B. Elliott, of Elgin and Mrs. Georgia L. Matheson of Janesville, Wis. Two brothers, Fred A. Carver, and Edward Carver and one sister, Mrs. Mary Barker, together with five grandchildren also survive her.

Mrs. Hubbard was not an ordinary woman. She possessed in a marked degree many of those qualities which grace our best womanhood. She came to this state among its early settlers and must have know something of their privation and hardships. But her disposition was buoyant and enabled her to meet all circumstances with courage and optimism. She had a keen and cultured mind and her wit often delighted those who had the pleasure of her intimate acquaintance. In brief, Mrs. Hubbard was a loyal wife, a devoted mother, a kind neighbor, a womanly Christian woman, and those who knew her best will long cherish a sweet and sacred memory of her noble womanhood.2,4
