Birth*c 1800 Frederick town, Maryland, USA2,3,1
Residence*b 1823 Baltimore, Maryland, USA; JAHR: It seems that after Joannah Adams got tired of staying with her fathers relatives she went to her grandfather Bonesteels. One day when she was about 18 years old she was spinning yarn one warm day and she was bare foot. A stranger came in and her grandfather knew him and introduced him as Jacob Frank, a young German from Baltimore. She was very much ashamed because she was barefoot but she sat down, and put her feet under the chair as well as she could. She took notice that this young Mr. Jacob Frank was dressed in fine clothes and looked very stylish in every way, and had oft (what was then called pumps) on his feet and white silk stockings.

At all events he fell in love at the first sight and came again, and again, and proposed to Joannah to be his wife. In a year they were married, and grandfather Bonesteel got the wedding dress, which was a striped silk in shades of blue. They went to some place in New Jersey, and went to housekeeping. He was by trade a glass blower and had work in a large glass factory. He was a skillful workman and had big wages always at his trade. His parents came from Germany but he was born at the town of Frederick town.1

Death*1875 The obituary for Joannah (4 April 1900) says that Jacob died in 1875 at the age of 81. However, the 1850 and 1860 cenus records list his age as 49 and 60 at the time of enumeration... making it seem unlikely that he actually lived to the age of 81.4

During his short ministry in Brainerd he organized a new congregation in the neighboring community of Pillager. But this period proved to have great personal significance. Within the Brainerd congregation he found the young woman who was to become his wife. On November 9, 1910, he and Ingeborg Liljendahl were married and left for Virginia to answer a new call.

From the Church History "After Fifty Years" (1935):

In the fall of 1908 Rev. Hugo Thorene became the pastor of Clara church. He found a congregation numbering 284. Some of the important events of Pastor Thorene's stay here were: the organization of the Pillager congregation; the Silver Jubilee of the Sunday school on July 20, 1909; fixing the communicant fees at a dollar a month for men and fifty cents a month for women; repairing the parsonage; the organization of another society for the younger women, the "Twilight Workers." Rev. Thorene was a thorough executive and organizer. In June, 1910, he was called to a Minneapolis church and it was with regret that our church saw him go. It is a pleasure to greet Pastor and Mrs. Thorene at the occasion of our Anniversary celebration.

It further says that he became aware that this was not true in the... "spring of 1918, when I registered for the draft. On looking up my father's naturalization, I learned that I was eleven months past 21 years of age at the time my father was naturalized."8

Biography* Both Joel and Ida (Hawkinson) were born in 1866: Ida in Scandia and Joel in Smaland, Sweden. In Sweden the family name was Frey, but they changed it to Torene in the United States. In 1878, Joel came, alone, from Sweden to Stillwater at age twelve.

Ida died in 1951 and Joel died in 1956.

Joel and Ida reared nine children. Eva, Ruth, Ben,Diana and Rachel, twins. Zipporah was the oldest. There was Irene, Jenny and Alice Margaret.

Alice was born north of Stillwater, Minnesota to Joel and Ida Helena Hawkinson Thorene in the home in which she was to be raised She was the baby, the ninth, in the family, including one older brother and seven older sisters. Zipporah, Ruth, Ben, Eva, Diana and Rachel, Irene, and Jenny .

Their house was a small four bedroom, two-story house with a large kitchen. With that large family there was much kitchen activity. There was no indoor water or toilet. A wood burning stove in the kitchen was used for cooking and heating water for washing and bathing and a wood/coal furnace in the basement heated the house.

Alice's father Joel, with the kids, ran a forty seven-acre farm with milk cows, a few pigs, and some chickens. They had a large garden from which they grew vegetables that they traded, along with eggs, for groceries. He also did paper hanging and house painting to earn money to raise the family.

Alice attended a one-room country school for the first three grades and then went into Stillwater for the rest of elementary and high school. She obtained her teaching certificate from the Normal School in Stillwater then taught grade one through eight in a one room country school (#52) near her home. She walked to the school in spring and fall and skied in the winter. They were a "horse and buggy" family until Alice was in high school. Then they got a Ford which took a lot of care and much cranking to get going.

In 1921 Alice attended a church play at the German Lutheran Church in Woodbury, Minnesota. A member of the cast was one, Harold Joseph Walter Schultz whom she met after the play. Courtship followed and love blossomed, they dated for several years and they wed in 1929. When first married they worked and lived on the Schultz farm south of Bayport, Minnesota. Sons Bill and Dick were born there. During that time Alice's husband worked in the Lake Elmo Creamery, did some truck driving, and worked on a farm near St. Paul. Joe came from a family of two sisters and one brother, Margaret, Myrtle, Mic/Amos, and Joe.

In 1934 they lived for a time in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. In 1937 they moved to Indiana. There they managed the Golden Arrow Farms. The main business was purebred Guernsey cattle, but they also had hogs and raised American standard bred show horses that were trained and shown in various towns in Indiana. The third son, Dennis, was born in Indiana so is a "Hoosier Pete".

In 1942, Joe and Alice moved the family back to Minnesota where they lived for a short time on the Sanitary Farm Dairy farm west of Stillwater. They then moved to one of the Quality Park Farms south of Hudson, Wisconsin. While on this farm Joey, son number 4, was born. In 1945,when the two older boys were old enough to help with farming, Joe and Alice started their own farm with Jersey cows and started a retail milk route in River Falls, Wisconsin. Alice has called River Falls home ever since.

One can see that Alice has spent much of her life as a farm wife, cooking and caring for many hired men over the years, helping with farming in general, but particularly in care of animals and processing of milk for delivery to homes in River Falls. In the mid-sixties Joe developed heart problems and died in 1968. After Joe's death Alice worked for many years as cook and baker in cafeterias in the River Falls Public schools and at the River Falls Campus of the University of Wisconsin. She lived in Norway with her son Dick and his family in 1970-71. They toured a good bit of Europe and visited Alice's fathers family's hometown of Vaxjo, in Smaland. The family was even invited to drive in a parade with Alice being cheered as a returning native.

Alice moved off the farm into her apartment on North Main Street in River Falls, in 1992, where she now happily lives with many longtime friends and new acquaintances. She is often a welcome guest at son's and grandchildren's homes. She always brings rays of sunshine with her wherever she goes.
.
They had four children, Richard, William, Joel and Dennis.

William married Gloria Johnson in Baldwin, Wisconsin in 1951. Their children, to date, are Freddie, Russ and Chuck. Grandson Chuck is married to Laurie and they have a son Larson Cole. Grandson Freddie married Monique. Russ and Denise has a son, named Tanner.

Richard (Dick) met and married Phyllis Jensen in Oakland, California in 1954. They were somewhat retired in Montana, about 12 miles north of Bozeman. Dick did a little veterinary consulting work. Phyllis helped her daughter-in-law Mem, grow flowers for he cut flower and dry flower markets. Their children are Dan, Bob, Nancy and Pat. Grandaughter Pat married Dave Rogowski. They have Jason and Jenna. Nancy married John Eckfeldt Three step sons come with this union, Craig, Bruce and John. Bob is the husband of Mem.

The third son, Dennis , married River Falls native, Sandy Morgan. Dennis has been in the retail milk business, real estate, and now has an appraisal company in River Falls. Sandy has been very active in elementary education and currently is principal of an elementary school in Spring Valley, Wisconsin where they currently live. They have two daughters, Sally and Allison.Sally is now Mrs. Paul "Omar" Haskins. And they have a little "Omar" Haskins, Maxwell Dennis Haskins.

Joel Lynn married Joanne Trabue from his own hometown. Both have had careers in sales and are now independent reps for Vasque hiking boots as well as other outdoor wear and accessories. They live in Rural Roberts and have their office on Main Street in River Falls, in the same building with Dennis' business.

Anecdote* Mr. Amos Otis, in the valuable series of Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families, publlshed some years ago in the Patriot of that town, says: "Among the items in Capt. Fuller's inventory is the following: 'Pearls, precious Stones and Diamonds, at a guess œ200.' In connection therewlth a marvellous story is told. Soon after Capt. Fuller's death, this box of jewels was missing. A Scotch servant was accused of its theft. There was no proof, only suspicion. The charge so affected him that he abstained from food, and soon died of grlef and starvation. He was buried in a grove on the northeastern lope of Scorton Hill. When he died it was winter, and a deep snow lay upon the ground. His body was buried at this spot, because the deep snow prevented his neighbors from carrying it farther. For nearly two centuries the plow has spared the turf which covers his grave. To this day it is pointed out, and timorous people dare not pass it after dark, Many fearful stories are told of the apparation of the Scotchman; and wayward children have been frightened into obedlence by threats of appeal to the Scotchman's ghost in aid of their elder's commands. Recently stones have been placed, one at the head and anothor at the foot of the loncly sepulcher."5

Mr. Lathrop calls them "small plaine pallizadse Houses." The walls were made of poles filled between with stones and clay, the roof thatched, the chimney to the mantle of rough stone, and above of cob-work, the windows of oiled paper, and the floors of hand sawed planks. Mr. Lathrop who had been accustomed to life in Christ's College, Cambridge, and to a generous life in England, truly says that the dwellings in Scituate were "meane".
