Death*1 Mar 1923 Lincoln, Lancaster Co., Nebraska; Obituary published in the Lincoln Star (Lincoln, Nebraska) on 11 March 1923:

Mrs. Francis Shamp.

Frances Holckom was born at Sandy Creek, Orleans county, New York, August 19, 1831, and died at Lincoln, March 1, 1923, aged 91 years, 6 months and 10 days.

She was united in marriage with Robert V. Schamp in Wisconsin, September 28, 1852. To them were born five children, one son and four daughters, one daughter dying in infancy, and one at the age of eight years. The son died in 1917.

From Wisconsin the family moved to Jefferson county, mo., and from there to Seward county, Neb, where they took a homestead, remaining there until the death of the father, June 13, 1877.

In the year 1878, she was united in marriage with Rev. Peter Schamp. this union was blessed with one son, Edward B.

In 1879 they moved to Lancaster county. She was again bereft of her companion in the fall of 1906. After the death of her husband she made her home with her children.

She was converted in early childhood and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. Later she became a member of the Baptist church. During the past several years she has attended services at the Calvary evangelical church at Tenth and Wood streets. her life had been a great blessing to many in the communities where she had lived.

There are left to mourn her loss three children. Mrs. Maggle Edward B. Schamp, six step-children, sixty-five grand children, fifteen great grand children and twenty-five great great grandchildren, and a host of friends.

But we sorrow not without hope, for she left a most blessed testimony that all was well, and that she was going hom to be with Jesus, and the end was peaceful.

Funeral services were held March 4 at the Calvary Evangelical church, rev. Bancroft and Rev. Mills officiating. Her body was laid to rest in Yankee Hill cemetery bside her husband and children.

John Holcomb(e) (1804-1884)
and his wife, Emily Jewell Holcomb and family came from Orleans Co., N. Y., in the forties and settled in Sec. 25 on the shore of Green Lake. Emily Jewell traced her ancestry to Thomas Jewell who, at the age of 27, came from England to Massachusetts in the ship, Planter. He settled at Braintree where he died leaving a will on record. On her mother's side she descended from Capt. Richard Stroud (1746-1819) of New London, Conn. His wife was Elizabeth Billings (1750- 1833). When the British burned New London in 1791 Capt. Stroud was at sea. His wife put the silverware in the well, and with her baby in her arms, accompanied by five other children, walked 30 miles to Stafford. One of those children, Fanny Stroud, later married Jonathan Jewell the parents of our Emily Jewell. Her family moved to Murray, N. Y., where she married John Holcomb in 1833. They had five children: Frances, Mrs. Peter Shamp, Lincoln, Neb.; Amy, who died young; Richard Billings; Julia; and John who married Jane Niblack and went to Nebraska where they left many descendants. At her death, the body of Emily J. Holcomb was returned to New York for burial.

RAGAN-HOLCOMB
Popular Young People United

A very pretty home wedding was solemnized by Rev. James M. Hamilton on Tuesday evening, November twelfth, nineteen hundred and twelve, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Holcomb, when their daughter Marie was united in marriage to Dr. Will Emmor Ragan, bot of Hebron.

Just preceding the ceremony Miss Edith Holcomb sang "Oh, Promise Me," accompanied by Miss Lula Shade. At eight o'clock Lobengrin's Bridal March was played by Miss Edith Holcomb, and the bridal couple came down the stairs and took their place before a dainty bower of ferns, smilax and white chrysanthemums. The color scheme of green and white was carried throughout the beautiful rooms.

The bride was charming in a dress of white crpe __ over messaline, with trimmings of silk shadow lace, and she carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses and swainsonia. Her going-away gown was a tailored suit of tan whipcord. The groom wore conventional black.

Mrs. D. Ima Shade received at the door, assisted by Marie and Clara Talbott. Mrs. Taylor Wilson sang "There Let Me Rest," accompnaied by Mrs. Roy Lockwood and Miss Mary Collins. Mrs. Tullis of Lincon sang several songs during the evening.

Mrs. Talbott and Mrs. keith had charge of the dining room, assisted by Miss Helen Squires. Dainty refresments were served by Misses Gladys Wood, Bess Richards, Carrie Casebolt, Winning Kingsley, Jane Lindsey, Mary Oo___?, Marion Hamilton and Gertrude Squires. Those who pinned the favors on the guests as they left were Mrs. E.E. Correll, Mrs. Cornelius Collins, Mrs. Norton Webb, Miss Minnie Thomas, Mrs. William Boyes, Mrs. Arthur Wagner, Miss Mary Conddington and Miss Emma Lawler.

The guest book was in charge of Lula Shade, about eighty being present. The out-of-town guests were the groom's mother and brothers, Mrs. Ragan, Mr. Dayton Ragan, and Mr. Floyd Ragan, from Utica: his cousins, Mr.s and Mrs. E. O. Tullis of Lincoln; his sister Mrs. W.P. Yoho, husband and son Darwin, from Eagle; and the brid's cousin, Miss Minnie Thomas, of Geneva.

Many beautiful gifts testified to the esteem in which these popular young people are held wherever known. Dr. and Mrs. Ragan_ to Beelvidere and took the night train, expecting to spend a week visiting in Omaha, Lincoln, Utica, and Eagle. After Ded. 15th they will be at home to their many friends in the cottage just east of the Methodist parsonage.
