Biography* | From: LaGrange Pioneers, page 70 The Holcombe coat-of-arms-Motto, "Veritas et fortitude"; came first to this country with Thomas Holcombe in 1657. Two of his descendants pioneered in LaGrange the brothers, John and Worcester Holcombe. John Holcomb(e) (1804-1884) and his wife, Emily Jewell Holcomb and family came from Orleans Co., N. Y., in the forties and settled in Sec. 25 on the shore of Green Lake. Emily Jewell traced her ancestry to Thomas Jewell who, at the age of 27, came from England to Massachusetts in the ship, Planter. He settled at Braintree where he died leaving a will on record. On her mother's side she descended from Capt. Richard Stroud (1746-1819) of New London, Conn. His wife was Elizabeth Billings (1750- 1833). When the British burned New London in 1791 Capt. Stroud was at sea. His wife put the silverware in the well, and with her baby in her arms, accompanied by five other children, walked 30 miles to Stafford. One of those children, Fanny Stroud, later married Jonathan Jewell the parents of our Emily Jewell. Her family moved to Murray, N. Y., where she married John Holcomb in 1833. They had five children: Frances, Mrs. Peter Shamp, Lincoln, Neb.; Amy, who died young; Richard Billings; Julia; and John who married Jane Niblack and went to Nebraska where they left many descendants. At her death, the body of Emily J. Holcomb was returned to New York for burial. | |

About eight years ago she suffered a stroke, from which she never fully recovered. She lived with her sister, Mrs. Nettie Coutts, in Minneapolis for some tine after her affliction. Five years ago this spring, after her brother George retired, she came back to the old home, where they spent four happy years together. Since his death last year she has made her home with her brother, Willis, in Mazomanie. She leaves to mourn two brothers, Willis and Frank, of Mazomanie and one sister, Mrs. Nettie Coutts of Minneapolis, and many friends and neigbors. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Willis Holcomb home and at the Methodist church, the Rev. Edw. J. Sachtjen officiating. Interment was in the Mazomanie cemetery. Pall-bearers were Chas. Jones, Thomas Sharratt, Herman Linley, Joseph Hottmann, Cyrus Jordon and Charles Morrill. Hester Griswold12 |
