Death*23 Feb 1875 Spring Prairie, Walworth Co., Wisconsin, USA; Obituary Notice. Alfred Hubbard was born in the town of Windham, Greene Co., New York, in 1796 and was married to Miss Hannah Stelle (sic) of the same town in the year 1818. He resided in Windham until 1826, when he moved to Mount Morris, Livingstone (sic) County, (where he married) and lived until the year 1835, then moved his family to this state and located on Spring Prairie, Walworth County, in which town he lived to the time of his death - the 23rd day of February last. His wife survived him. He was the father of eight children, six of whom are still living. His occupation during almost his entire life was farming, brought up to it he understood it thoroughly, and was by able and good management to accumulate a very handsome property before he came to this state. He was a man of more than ordinary ability and was recognized in his old town in the state of New York as one of its leading men, having frequently held some of the most important offices in that town. In early life he made a profession of religion and was a consistent member of the church at the time of his death, and had been for more than forty years. His life was one of activity and untiring industry. It might be said of him that whatever his hands found to do he did it with his might, and blessed as he was with a large degree of common sense, his energies were never wasted upon wild theories or useless speculations; what he did he intended should count, and he rarely failed in his intentions. Few men equalled him in natural business capacity, and if he had had in early life the advantage of a higher degree of mental culture, he would undoubtedly have attained high mark as a business man. Mr. Hubbard was a man of great purity of character; his religioin like everything else about him was strictly practical, and showed itself in the purity of his life and in all those acts which go to make up a true christain (sic) character, rather than in mere works. But it was in his domestic life that his character shone the brightest - a better and truer husband, or a kinder father could not be found. The writer of this was intimate with him and in his family for nearly fifty years, and has often felt that very few families have been blessed with such a husband and father. How much more gratifying to the friends must be the recollecdtion of such a husband and father, than a legacy of great riches or honors without them. Mr. Hubbard has lived a long and useful life; and if performing faithfully and fearlessly the duties of life makes one happy, he must have lived a happy life. It may be said of him that his life was a success - blessed in his marriage and in his children, in his quiet and unostentatious life he filled up the measure of his days and passed from our sight, but the life of a good man never ends; a green and a fresher life seems to spring up from his ashes and lives and grows in the memory of those who loved him, and will be unconsciously perhaps wrought out by them in their lives and left by them a legacy to those who come after them. Thus our actions become immortal. Let us hope then that our friend will not be dead to us, but that the recollection of his pure life may strenghten us in the way of well doing. In this way we shall best show our appreciation of his life and character, and raise the best monument to his memory.5,22,7,8,9

Biography* From "Our New Members" Rotary clipping:

Arthur O. Hubbard (Art) is a new member and still a very old one. He attended the first meeting at which Rotary was discussed. This meeting was held at the West Hotel. Just before the meeting Charlie Davis grabbed him by the arm and said "Come along, you don't need to know what its about."

Art became one of the charter members and continued until 1913. He became so active in civic affairs at that time that his business partner the later Herbert Puffer took his place.

Art was born in 1860 in Spring Prairie, Wis. No, don't look at the map. You can't find it. He came to Minneapolis in 1878 so you see he's an old pioneer.

In 1901 he and the two Puffer brothers bought out the Sweatt Manufacturing co., which was making wheel barrows. Its been a good vehicle to run a business on, because although the horseless carriage has displaced the horse-drawn one, we still have to trundle the wheelbarrow when we clean up the back yard. And the Puffer-Hubbard co. has made their share of them.

In 1910 they erected the present building at 32nd Ave and 26th St., S., a fine structure with up to date equipment, overhead lighting and all the other new fangled wrinkles.

The concern now makes boy's wagons, washing machines and silos, besides wheel-barrows.

History of Minneapolis - Gateway to the Northwest, 1923:

Arthur 0. Hubbard has been an active and successful representative of Industrial interests in Minneapolis as the president of the Puffer-Hubbard Manufacturing Company for the past twenty-two years. His birth occurred in Spring Prairie, Wisconsin, on the 15th of August, 1860, his parents being Ogden and Ann (Conkey) Hubbard. In the acquirement of his education he attended the public schools of his native town and subsequently entered a private school at Geneva Lake. In 1880, when a young man of twenty, he made his way from Spring Prairie, Wisconsin, to Casselton, North Dakota, where he was identified with the lumber business in association with Wallace Grovner for a year. On the expiration of that period he removed to St. Cloud, where he learned the machinist's trade in the service of the Rosenberger Manufacturing Company. He next spent a year as surveyor of lumber in the lumber mills at St. Cloud and for an equal period engaged in surveying logs under the surveyor general of the state. In 1884 he embarked in the manufacturing business at Sauk Center, in connection with C. P. McClure of St. Cloud, being thus engaged until 1888, when he came to Minneapolis. Here he entered industrial circles with the Sweatt Manufacturing Company, with which he was associated from 1888 until 1901, when he became president of the Puffer-Hubbard Manufacturing Company, and has since been at its head. He organized the latter concern in association with his brother-in-law, Herbert M. Puffer, and George D. Puffer and took over the business of the Sweatt Manufacturing Company, occupying the plant until 1910, when the Puffer-Hubbard Manufacturing Company erected its present large and modern building. George D. Puffer has held the office of vice president since the time of the organization of the concern, while Herbert M. Puffer served as secretary until his death in September, 1921. Mary A. Hawkins has succeeded the latter as secretary and is also treasurer, George D. Puffer is a resident of Waukesha Wisconsin. The company manufactures electric washers wheelbarrows, silos, folding delivery boxes, coaster wagons, etc., and has developed one of the most important industries of Minneapolis for the business has increased year by year until it ranks among the leaders in its line in the Northwest. In its control Mr. Hubbard manifests business foresight and sagacity. He makes the study of human nature and the psychology of handling men an important part of his work and he has met with most gratifying results.

In 1884 occurred the marriage of Arthur 0. Hubbard and Miss Nellie Hunter, a daughter of Dr. William R. Hunter of St. Cloud, Minnesota, who was one of the first surgeons on the Northern Pacific Railroad. To Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard have been born two children, Dorothy who is the wife of M. C. Balch of Minneapolis; and Harry H. Hubbard, both of whom are connected 'with the Puffer-Hubbard Manufacturing Company.

Politically Mr. Hubbard gives his allegiance to the democratic party and the principles for which it stands. Although he has never sought nor desired public preferment, he is ever cognizant of the duties and obligations of citizenship and is never too busy to give his aid in the furtherance of any movement for the upbuilding of the city. He was formerly a director of the Civic & Commerce Association, is serving on the directorate of the Manufacturers Club and holds membership in the Rotary Club and various other organizations. His appreciation for the social amenities of life is indicated in his connection with the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the Automobile Club and the Interlachen Club. He is a man of good business capacity, acknowledged integrity of character, and also possesses an energy and progressiveness which are prominent attributes of leaders in all lines of endeavor.

Death*25 Jan 1887 Troy, Walworth Co., Wisconsin; Mr. E.A. Hubbard
Died in Troy, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, January 25, 1887, Mr. E.A. Hubbard, in the 63rd year of his age.

Mr. Hubbard was born in Greene county, New York March 12, 1824. When he was but two years of age his parents removed to Livingston county, where he continued to reside till reaching manhood. In 1845 he was united in marriage with Miss Eliza Kinney. In the same year he came to Wisconsin and located in the north-western part of the town of East Troy, where he remained some two years. In 1847 he purchased his farm in Troy, where he continued to reside until the time of his death.

Mr. Hubbard's death was quite sudden and unexpected. Many of his neighbors and friends had not even heard of his sickness. He had been unusually well until about a week before his death. He was then a little indisposed by a cold from which he thought to recover in a day or two. Soon his family detected some symptoms of erysipelas, of which he had before had some experience. On the Thursday before his death they called a physician. Still there was no thought of any danger, nor any special anxiety as to the result. Some two hours before his death came the first intimation of danger. A son living but two miles away, and a daughter visiting frineds a few miles distant were summoned, but did not reach home till their father had breathed his last.

Mr. Hubbard had been a resident of Troy almost forty years. He had gained the confidence and respect of his neighbors and fellow-citizens. He had occupied positions of local trust, in which he had been found faithful. He was a throughtful, intelligent, upright member of society. In early years he had been connected with the Presbyterian church of East Troy, but in later years had not been connected with any church.

His wife, who had been his companion for more than 40 years, four sons and two daughters survive to mourn his loss.

His funeral was attended on Thursday morning, and a goodly number of neighbors and friends gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed and bear him away to his final resting place.1,17,8,18,6

Frank A. Hubbard, After a Prolonged Illness Answers Summons of Death

Another of East Troy's oldes citizens has passed to the great beyond, as Frank Augustus Hubbard was summoned by death on Tuesday last, Feb. 29th, aged 67 year and 11 months.

Several years ago Mr. Hubbard suffered a strok of paralysis and was thus confined to his home and only a few weeks ago a second stroke nearly ended his life, but he rallied somewhat and lingered until last week, when he entered that sleep which knows no awakening.

Frank Augustus Hubbard was born in the town of Troy , Wis., March 29, 1849. He was the oldest son of Edward and Eliza Hubbard. After being educated in the home school he attended Beloit College. On Februrary 22, 1872, he was married to Sarah J. Morrison, who preceded him in death, having passed to the great beyond on June 14, 1894. To this union six children were born, two having died in infancy, those surviving being two sons and two daughters, vis: William M. Hubbard, of Troy; Harry J. Hubbard, of Milwaukee, Mrs. Mary E. Dunham, of Troy Center, and Mrs. Hattie E. Lean, of Elkhorn.

In 1895 he was married to Mary E. Morrison, who with the four children above mentioned have lost a loving father and husband.

Mr. Hubbard was of a kind an jovial disposition and did all he could for the welfare of his family. As a friend and neighbor he was ever ready to lend a helping hand in time of need and the good deeds he did while on this earth will long be remembered.

The funeral was held from his late home having moved here several years ago from his farm in Troy, about 2½ miles northwest of this place, taking place on Friday, March 3rd, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. T.W. Barbour, of the Congregational church officiated and the services at the grave were conducted by the Masonic Order, Geo. L. Harrington, of Elkhorn, being master of ceremonies, the remains being laid at rest in Oak Ridge cemetery.

His masonic brethern here will miss him as will also large hos of friends and to the surviving relatives the sympathy of the communit is extended.

Death of Frank A. Hubbard

Last week's issue of the Independent mentioned the death of F.A. Hubbard, which occurred at noon, Feburary 29, 1916. Frank Augustus Hubbard, oldest son of Edward and Eliza Hubbard was born in the town of Troy, March 29, 1849. He received most of his education in the district school, but for a short time attended Beloit college. February 22, 1872 he was married to Sarah J. Morrison, and to them were born six children, two of whom died in infancy and the other four children survive him. His wife died June 14, 1894. He was married in 1895 to Mary E. Morrison. He has been in poor health for the past ten years, and was finally obliged to quit farming. He bought a home here in the village, where he spent the remainder of his days. He has been much of a care for the past year, but all that loved ones could do to make him comfortable was done, but to no avail. His children, Will M. of Troy, Harry J. of Milwaukee, Mrs. Mary Dunham of Troy Center, and Mrs. Hattie Lean of Elkhorn were with him most of the time during his last sickness. Mr. Hubbard was a kind husband and father, and a neighbor who was ever ready to lend a helping hand, and will be greatly missed. The funeral was held a the residence, Friday afternoon, March 2, 1916, Rev. Barbour of the Congregational chuch officiating, and he was laid to rest in Oak Ridge cemetery. Mr. Hubbard was a Mason and th services at the grave were in charge of the Masons, Mr. Harrington of Elkhorn officiating. Mrs. Hubbard was stricken with pneumonia a few days before the death of her husband, and her life has been spared of, but she is somewhat better at present, a fact all will be glad to know.

Biography Redwood Falls, Redwood Co., Minnesota, USA; A rather strange coincidence is the fact that my first school teacher married Fannie's brother Frank, who was the principal of the schools in Redwood. little did he think when he used to punish me for insubordination that I would one day be his brother-in-law. I remember one time he made me stand on a dunce stool for three days with a split stick on my nose. I would wiggle my nose and the stick would fall off. frank would laugh with the scholars and pretty soon would come and put the stick back on my nose. Maybe that's what makes my nose so unsightly now.

Nuptials. Hubbard-Ayer
One of the most delightful events in the history of Lodi, occurred at the Baptist church on Tuesday evening last, in the public celebration of the marriage of Prof. F.V. Hubbard, of Redwood Falls, Minn., and Miss Minnie L. Ayer, one of Lodi's choicest daughters.

This is the bride's native village, and her cheerful disposition, coupled with a circumspect life, had won for her a host of friends who seemed to vie with each other in trying to make the occasion one to be long and pleasantly remembered, an effort to which nature lent aid by making Tuesday one of the brightest and balmiest of the season. A public invitation having been extended to the friends, the response was most hearty, and long before the appointed hour, the church was filled. Promptly at eight o'clock the bridal party, consisting of the bride and groom and four attendants, viz: Misses Sue Ayer and Grace Richards and Messrs. George Ayer and H.N. Simons, entered, and passed up the aisle, responsive to the music of Mendelssohn's Wedding March - Mrs. T.E. Lewis, of Baraboo, presiding at the organ - taking their places under the florally decorated arch.

Rev. S.S. Utter, the Baptist clergyman, quickly and gracefully sanctioned the plighted vows, and welded the marriage bonds nevermore to be severed. Then followed congratulations, warm, cheerful, and abundant.

The bridal party then repaired to the home of the bride's parents, where a reception was tendered the relatives; but the after-supper chat and merry songs must be cut short, for the train was approaching which was to bear away the newly married couple on their bridal trip.

We must not fail to speak of the floral decorations, which were elaborate and beautiful, and though arranged by members of the church where the marriage took place, great credit and thanks are due members of other churches, who so cheerfully and generously contributed plants and flowers. Indeed, the lavish kindness of friends has signally marked the whole affair, and Minnie cannot fail to go to her new home with sweet memories of her last days in the home of her childhood.; Bride=Minnie Lois Ayer11,12,5,13,10,14,15

Employmentbt 1895 - 1901 Redwing, Goodhue Co., Minnesota, USA; Superintendent of Redwing Schools

F.V. Hubbard was elected Superintendent of the Red Wing Schools by vote of the School Board on 14 May 1895. It took 2 votes and he defeated the incumbent, G.O. Burroughs. His salary was set at $1,500 / year. His salary was increased to $1,600/year in 1897 then to 1,700. By 1900 it had been raised to $1,800/year.

In his annual reports F.V. Hubbard reported on the primary issues facing the school system: an inadequate supply of books, poor ventilation and heating systems, truancy, and insufficient classroom space (5 year olds were no longer allowed to enroll due to space limitations). He also argued for enforcement of the anti-smoking laws.

He died on August 27th... just 8 days before the start of the new school term on 3 September 1901.5

His Neck Broken

Superintendent Hubbard of The Red Wing Schools is Killed

Accident in his own Dooryard

While Engaged in Directing a Workman Who is Levelling the Lawn With a Scraper. He is Hit on the Head by the Lever of the Scraper and Instantly Killed - Was a Well-Known Educator

Red Wing, Minn., Aug. 28, - F.V. Hubbard, superintendent of the Red Wing schools, was instantly killed yesterday afternoon in his own dooryard.

He had been remodeling the house and was directing August Nelson's work with a horse scraper on the lawn. It is an affair that dumps its load by unhooking a lever. The driver had some trouble with it, and Mr. Hubbard, who was in haste to be done, tried to help him. He unhooked it, the load of dirt threw the scraper over suddenly and the end of the lever hit him in the back of the head, breaking his neck. He died instantly.

He had been superintendent here [Red Wing] six years; before that nine years in Waseca and six years in Redwood Falls. He stood high among the school men of the state, was one of the vice presidents of the state teachers' association, an officer of the National Association of Superintendents, and was a leading candidate for state superintendent of Minnesota last winter.

He was forty-six years old and a graduate of Whitewater normal. his wife and four sons survive him.

Local article, same paper:

F.V. Hubbard Killed.

Former Principal of Redwood Schools Meets a Violent Death.

F.V. Hubbard, superintendent of the Red wing, Minn., public schools, was killed Tuesday while at work in his door yard. He was superintending some grading operations at the time. The machine was a grader on wheels which is unloaded by means of a lever. Mr. Hubbard was assisting the driver, when the lever was released and struck him on the back of the head, breaking his neck and causing instant death.

Mrs. L.N. Rowe, of this city, Mr. Hubbard's mother, was informed by wire of the accident and in company with her daughter, Miss Lucy Rowe, left for Red Wing Wednesday. The funeral is to take place today.

Mr. Hubbard was born in Wisconsin in 1856 and obtained his education at the Plattville normal school [Grant Co., WI]. His first educational work was done as principal of the Dundas public schools [Rice Co., MN]. He then came to Redwood Falls and occupied the position of principal of the public schools four years, leaving here in the summer of 1886. he went to Waseca where he held a similar position for nine years and thence to Red Wing where he has been the past six years. He leaves a widow and four sons the eldest 16 and the youngest 2. While here he married Miss Minnie Ayer, a teacher in the schools here. Mr. Hubbard was well and favorably known. He was a candidate for state superintendent last winter and was otherwise prominent in educational circles.

From a Walworth Co., Wisconsin paper (exact paper not known, it's from a clipping):

Many Walworth county people will regret to hear of the death of Frank V. Hubbard, which occurred at Red Wing, Minnesota a few days since. Mr. Hubbard was formerly a resident of LaGrange and Spring Prairie. He had lived at Red Wing many years, and at the time of his death was city superintendent of schools. His death was due to a blow he received in the back of the neck from thelever of a road scraper which he was operating.

The Republican of Red Wing in speaking of Mr. Hubbard's death says: "Rev. Moore, the officiating clergyman, paid a wam and well-deserved tribute to Prof. Hubbard when he said, "Death has invaded the home and has brought sorrow not only there but to the whole city. His life has been an honorable and noble one; his love and affection for his family has been a strong one; and his interest in his calling, never lacking."

Mr. Hubbard's old schoolmates of the State Normal at Whitewater and his many Walworth county friends will extend their heartfeld sympathy to the bereaved wife and the fatherless children.

Tribute published by the Red Wing Board of Education:

Whereas, It has pleased our Heavenly Father in his wise providence to take from among us Prof. F.V. Hubbard, the honored superintendent of our public schools, a a time which to our human understanding seems so untimely and under circumstances so tragic, be it

Resolved, by the board of education of the city of Red Wing, That we sincerely lament and deeply delplore his sudden death;

That we found in Supt. Hubbard many noble qualities and traits of character to admire;

That he was eminently fitted for the responsible position he held;

That he was imbued with a high sense of honor, and a spirit of impartiality and justice in all his dealings, and always duly respected the opinions of others;

That in administering the affairs of our schools, he was broad in his views and always ready to take counsel from his assistants and subordianates.

That in dealing with the pupils he treated all, both rich and poor, with the same consideration and kindness;

That by his death the board of education has lost a wise and eminently helpful adviser, our public schools a successful, painstaking and consciencious superintendent, our children a loving friend and faithful counsellor, our city a true and loyal citizen and the state one of its foremost educators;

Resolved further, That in this their hour of sorrow and affliction, we extend to the bereaved family our heartfeld sympathy, assuring them that we have an interest in their welfare and that we individually extend to them a willing heart and helping hand whenever opportunities to do so may arise; and

Resolved, That these resolutions be entered on the records of the board, a copy sent to the family of the deceased, and that they be published in the city papers.

This from a news clipping (paper not identified - but likely Walworth Co., Wisconsin) in the Hubbard Family Scrapbook:

George Hubbard

M, b. circa 1601, d. 18 March 1684
Biography Thousand Years of Hubbard History, Edward Day, 1895 (original paragrahing [or lack thereof] have been retained!):

George Hubbard was born in 1601, and probably in eastern or southeastern England, where those bearing the name were located in great numbers. Nothing in the form of records has yet been found determining his birthplace or time of arrival in America. His name first appears in 1639 in a list of the early settlers of Hartford. These settlers came overland from the vicinity of Boston during the years 1635 and 1636, and located the towns of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield, Ct., also Springfield, Mass. GEORGE HUBBARD was one of the number. He was given six acres of land "by courtesy of the town, with privilege of Wood & keeping cows on the common," and resided on a lot adjacent to the land of James Ensign and George Graves on a road that ran parallel with the Connecticut River, according to an early map, now extant. This road ran from South Meadow to George Steel's land, and then turned and ran across the "ox pasture" towards Wethersfiled, passing near to the Great Swamp. In 1640 he married Elizabeth Watts, daughter of Richard* [* for text of footnote, see Richard Watts entry] and Elizabeth Watts, and was then assigned a "home-lot" and land upon the east side of the "Great River." The colonial records show that "William Swanyne and George Hubbard were appointed Sep 4, 1640, appraisers of the estate of Edward Mason," and April 24, 1649, Geore Hubberd was "fined £10 for exchanging a gunn with an Indian." He appears to have disposed of his land and removed with about fifteen other families in March, 1650-51 to Mattabesett, so called until 1653, when it bacame Middletown. It swelled rapidly in size from accretions from Wethersfiled, Ct., and Rowley, Chelmsford, and Woburn, Mass., requiring afterward a division into sections knowsn as, respectively, Middletown, East Middletown or Chatham - now Portland, North Middletown or Upper Houses - now Cromwell, and later, Middlefield and Westfield. About 1650, or when he left Hartford, he carried with him a commission from the Colonial Government as "Indian Agent and Trader for the Mattabessett District." In 1654 he wasmade freeman, and settled with is son-in-law, Thomas Wetmore, upon opposite corners on the east side of Main Street. He owned large land tracts ont he west side and on the east side of the river. These lands were recorded Sep 5, 1654. He, Thomas Wetmore and two other land owners on the west side of the street, gave land for the second meeting-house. Steps were taken for erecting the first meeting-house Feb 10, 1652. Mr. Samuel Stow of Cambridge College, England, for several years temporarily had charge of this congregation. The records read: "It was agreed at a meeting of John Halls hous to build a meeting hous and to make it 20 fot square & 10 fot between sill and plat, the heygt of it." This structure was a one-story log house with a palisade around it, and GEORGE HUBBARD, living adjacent, was naturally selected as its keeper. Dec 17, 1666, he was allowed "40 shillings for sweeping the meeting-house and kepping the glass [hour glass]. This also included the services of his eldest son, Joseph, who beat the drum to assemble the congretation and to give warning of the approach of Indians. Ten men organized this church formally in 1668 and signed its covenant, the first minister, Nathaniel Collins, one of the first graduates of Harvard, heading the list of signatures. Much of the "confession of fairth" is still the creed of the church, which eventually came to be known as the Old North Church. The donated land abutted "against the corners of George Hubbard & Thomas Wetmer on the east sie - Thomas Wetmer half a rod at ye north corner; George Hubbard half a rod wide, three rods in length, against ye body of ye meeting-house and from thence out into an angle thre or four rods further," making in all thirty-two feet square. In case the meeting-house was reoved the land was to "return to ye proprietors again." This site was exactly in the middle of the highway, near or between what are now known as Liberty and Grand streets. Most of these dovenanters lcoated near this meeting-house, at the northern end of Main street, where is now St. John's Square, though three resided at "Upper Houses." An appraisement of his property March 22, 1670, showed him to be worth £90.10s.15d., and in 1673 £ 132.10s. At his death his inventory showed him worth £243.10s., and possessed of a dwelling-house and home lot worth £50, "2 1-3 acres of long meadow" worth £18.10s., 3 "acres of meadow (at (?) Pessenchaug) on the east side the Great River" worth £9, a tract at Long Hill of 226 acres, another "parcell west from the towne" of 300 acres, one "parcell on the east side of the Great River" of 464 acres, and the "one-halfe Lott" of 30 acres , a total of over one thousand acres. His original will in on file in the Hall of Records at Hartford, Ct., in a box labelled "Wills-H, 1647-1750," and bears date of May 22, 1681. In this document he states that he is "eighty years in age, yet in comfortable health of body & haveing the use of my understanding," etc. In his inventory, taken May 13, 1685, it is stated that he "deceased the 18 of March 1684." Sergt. Samuel Warde, John Hall, senior, and Ebenezer Hubbard were the witnesses. His widow died in 1702. One record of him says that he was "highly respected, and of marked integrity and fairness." He appears at this distance of time to have been devout, industrious, and possessed of those sturdy, wholesome qualities of mind and body without which the composition of our coutnry today would not possess that element of robustness and stability that has enabled it to so successfully withstand foreign infections, manners, and monarchisms. This New England fibre in the govermental-politico texture is now, sad to note, becoming gradually obliterated by unAmerican innovations and practices. He must have been a man of "marked integrity and fairness" to have been selected byt the colony as its Indian Trader. Much judgment has to be used by this representative of the colony in these dealings. Promiscuous trading by any one was forbidden, as fire-arms and fire-water were frequently bartered by indiscreet persons, which produced direful results. This resulted in the selection of one man to do the trading for all. On his judgment and prudence much depended. He must have erred, however, at one time, for the Colonial Court fined him £10 for exchanging a gun with an Indian. In a spirit of charity, his descendants are privileged to conjecture that he might have regarded the gun as an old and harmless one and incapable of going off and hurting anyone.1
Biography* Not personally seen, but quoted from "A Catalogue of the Names of the first Puritan Settlers of the Colony of Connecticut":

Hubbard, George, in 1665, certified before William Leete, at Guilford, the consideration paid Lowheag, by the inhabitants of Wethersfield, for six miles in breadth on both sides of the river, and six deep from the river west, and three deep from the river east, in Wethersfield. He was on the committee of the General Court in March, '37, with Talcott, Mason, and others. While he remained in the colony he was an important man at the General Court, and upon committees appointed by the Court. He was one of the first settlers fo the colony -- was appointed with two others, in '56, to survey the town of Wethersfield--was a committee to the General Court in '37 and '38, and a deputy in '39 in April, August and September, and was one of the leading men in the colony. He resided at Wethersfield, but remained in the colony but a few years before he removed to Milford, the to Guilford, and afterwards to Middletown, where he died in 1684, aged about 80. Children, Joseph, Daniel, Nathaniel, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary Ranny, and Richard. (His wife, Elizabeth.) Joseph, of Middletown, died in '86--his children were Joseph, 15 years old, Robert 13, George 11, John 8, and Elizabeth 3.

Burial*c 1684 Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, USA; Thousand Years of Hubbard History:

GEORGE HUBBARD and his widow were buried in the Middletown Riverside Cemetery (near the original log church), laid out in 1650, and lying triangularly on the west bank of the Connecticut River, close to the Union Depot, and within a stone's throw of where he resided. This cemetery was laid out shortly after the year 1750 [probably 1650], and was the only buring-ground until 1713, the inhabitants upon both sides of the river using it. In it are several tombstones bearing the years upon them of 1600. These are mostly of blue slate, upon which the lettering better retains its contour than upon the brown sandstone, though the slate sometimes flakes off and is thus lost....

...Tradition locates GEORGE HUBBARD'S grave close to the burying-ground entrance, fronting west, on St. John's Square, but no headstones show where he or his widow's dust is mouldering.8,3

Biography* City Directory listings, as well as Harlow Hubbard's death certificate indicate that his occupation was an auto dealer. He was retired at the time of his death.

He lived on Arundell Avenue in Saint Paul... but died in a Minneapolis Hospital... so his death certicate was issured in Hennepin Co.

His death certificate also indicates that the heart problems which led to his death (at age 63) had existed for 25 years... with arteriosclerosis, gradual coronary occlusion, and death finally caused by myocaridal damage with aneurysm failure.

The death certificate also reports that he did not serve in the armed forces.

His brother, Will A. Hubbard was the "informant" on the death. It's interesting that he did not provide (or it was not recorded, if he did) his brother's complete birth date (only the year) or address (only the street).
