Biography | Old Times in Windham by Rev. Henry Hedges Prout Originally published in the Windham Journal from February 18, 1869 to March 31, 1870. Article 4 (extracts from follow) published on March 11, 1869. Extracted from the microfilm copies of the Windham Journal located at the Vedder Research Library. Retyped by Arlene Goodwin. Downloaded from the Internet December 2002 at www.rootsweb.com\~nygreen2\ Jedediah Hubbard's tomb-stone in the old grave yard has inscribed on it, "The first Deacon and the first Settler in Windham." Probably he was Deacon at the founding of the Society in 1803, but as no date of his settlement here is mentioned, it is not so evident that the tradition is correct, that makes him the first settler. It is an authentic tradition among the descendents of Elisha Strong, senior, that this family were much rejoiced at the coming of Mr. Hubbard into the country, because they would thus have another neighbor near them. It would follow that Mr. Strong was here first, and his arrival was about 1786. The several sons of Jedediah Hubbard, Timothy, Jedediah, Chauncey, Amos and Samuel, young married men, came with their father and settled around him. The old man's residence, built by himself , is still standing across the creek from the saw-mill, on the farm owned by Darius Prout. This house is probably one of the very oldest in this part of the country. Respecting Mr. Hubbard's residence in this house, a rather curious incident or two may be related. The land on which it stands was claimed as covered by two patents, that of Livingston and that of Hardenburgh. It would appear that Hubbard's title obtained of Livingston, was held by the agent of Hardenburgh to be invalid, and he consequently proposed to take formal possession of the house in Hardenburgh's name. It his anxiety, Mr. Hubbard applied to one Simmons, who then lived in the house built by him, but afterwards sold to John Prout, Senior. Simmons told him to go directly home, and put over the fire all the kettles he had or could get, and fill them with water, and heat it hot, and bar the door of the house, and if the agent come near enough, pour the scalding water on him. Whether in the face of such a plan of defense, the agent and his men made their proposed attack, the story does not say-but it is certain that Mr. Hubbard was left in peaceful possession until the day when, at 82 years of age, he slept with his fathers. It is said that as a solution of the difficult question of title, the settlers sometimes got deeds from both Livingston and Hardenburgh agents for the same tract of land. There was a cheerful, gay tone about the early settlers, characteristic of pioneers generally. It is related, for example, that it was the custom of the Hubbard family, father and sons, to keep their holidays by playing the game of ball. What a picture does it present of the simple, old fashioned joyousness! The Patriarch, (Deacon afterwards) with his married sons, all boys again together; and full of innocent glee, like children, engaged in a joyous laughing struggle who should win. In the lack of what is more serious the following incident may be mentioned. It will at least help to illustrate the manners and ways of the Old Times. The Simmons before mentioned was present, it would appear, in the kitchen of the house built and occupied by Jedediah Hubbard, when a dance, then a very common way of spending an evening, was going on. It was probably before the organization of the Presbyterian Society in 1803-indeed much earlier-for there was present in the room adjoining the kitchen a gentleman who in the early years occasionally preached here-the Rev. Mr. Townsend. Very naturally, as music and dancing went on, the good man's excitement increased, till rising in his indignation, and opening the door, he thrust his head among the gay crowd, exclaiming, "fire! fire! fire!" this was met by Simmons in mad-cap hilarity, shouting, "water! water! water!" and the musical uproar ceased not. It is to be regretted that the authentic facts relative to the early history of so large a family are so few. Only one descendent of Jedediah Hubbard, Mrs. Snow, a great-grandchild, is living in this part of the country. His son, Deacon Timothy Hubbard, held a prominent place in the Presbyterian Society for many years. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Jedediah Hubbard have followed the drift of emigration and must be sought in the far West. 2
Biography | Centennial Of The Old First Congregational Church, Windham, New York 1803 - 1903 June 16th, 1903 - "A record of the First Congregational Church formed in Windham, County of Greene, State of New York, March 21st, 1803, by Beriah Hotchkin, pastor of the church in Greenfield, and Samuel Fuller, pastor of the church in Rensselaerville." (extracts follow) "The persons whose names are hereunto annexed, were agreed in a publicly professed to believe the following Articles of Faith, and entered into the Covenant affixed to the same." The Articles of Faith are 14 in number and will be found in the appendix. The Covenant, too, will be found in the appendix. These Articles and this Covenant were solemnly adopted and assented to by 28 persons— 11 men and 17 women— who have the honor, the distinguished honor, of being its Original Members. Their names are as follows: Elisha Strong, Samuel Ives, Jedediah Hubbard, Timothy Hubbard, Amos Hubbard, Jared Rice, Ichabod Brown, Elijah Strong, Samuel Crocker, Increase Claflin, George Stimson, Lydia Baldwin, Lois Lockwood, Lowly Ives, Martha Hubbard, Dolly Hubbard, Dolly Hubbard, Jr., Abigail Snow, Hannah Morison, Abigail Stimson, Sabara Hubbard, Esther Rice, Betsey Crocker, Rebekah Tuttle, Anna Buel, Sarah Rice, Sarah Claflin, Experience Stone. They chose George Stimson, son of Capt. George, Clerk of the Church. Jedediah Hubbard appears a little later, to be called "deacon." If he had been chosen here the record was not made. Timothy, his son, also appears as deacon, later. ================ But to return to the story of our own church. It grew slowly, at first. About 1807, there was a great revival . Those were trying times in those early days, says Col. Robertson. But Mrs. Theophilus Peck, Mrs. Lockwood, and Mrs. Brockett, who lived on the Heights, agreed to meet at a certain log in the woods between their homes, to pray for revival of religion, which they did from week to week and month to month, till a revival commenced, and a large number of heads of families and many others were converted and unite with the church. About the same time the Methodist itinerant preachers began to make occasional visits to this region. Dolly Hubbard joined them, and when called to account for forsaking her own church, sent Mr. Stimson a defiant letter, for which she was disciplined. ================ Up to this time the society that built the meeting-house seems to have had not legal organization, and if they kept any records, none remain. For nearly ten years they had gone on so, but Oct. 10th, 1808, a meeting for incorporation was held at the meeting-house in Batavia, of which Perez Steele was Chairman, and Noah Pond, Clerk. They proceeded to organize under the State law of March 27th, 1801, and took the name of First Society of the Town of Windham." And chose Noah Pond, Philetus Reynolds, Nathan Osborn, Timothy Hubbard, Elijah Strong and Jairous Munson, Trustees. The certificate of incorporation, duly attested, was laid before Munson Buel, one the lay judges of the County Court. It was approved by him and is recorded in the Greene County Clerk’s Office. Oct. 24th, 1809, Vol. 1, page 21,22. Sept. 28th, 1808, the society voted Rev. Mr. Stimson a settlement of $150, on condition that "if he left without the consent of the society, he should pay it back." This money was paid to Mr. Stimson the next June. In October, 1809, the society adopted what is called the "permanent" subscription plan, in which each subscriber bound himself to pay the sum opposite his name, every year in future, unless he moved away or joined some other church. More than 50 signed this and it is still in existence, with it autograph signatures. They also voted to fence the church-yard. In 1811 a committee was appointed to "promote singing." Was it a singing school? ================ Baptisms - 1st Congregational Church in Windham: Timothy Hubbard Laure, Nov. 29th, 1789 Lusina, Nov. 11th, 1792 Alphred, June 26th, 1796 Weltha, May 7th, 1799 Halsey, Sept. 6th, 1802 Laure bapt. Twenty years before 1803 these valleys and mountain sides were covered with a primreview forest, chiefly hemlock. They had no settlers, and were visited only by forest rangers, roving idiots, tory refugees, and occasional land prospectors. It was not till after the Revolutionary War that it was safe to settle so far back from the Hudson River. Peace came in 1783. By 1785 it was safe to begin settlements.4

Death* | 8 Dec 1822 | Windham, Greene Co., New York, USA; Hard to tell who the dates apply to in the following quote: Men of Green Co. in the American Revolution: Capt. Samuel Hubbard, Ashland Son of Jedediah Hubbard, who died in Ashland, Dec 8, 1822, aged 82y. Came from Haddam, Conn. (Information supplied by a descendent). However, Jedediah's son, Samuel, wasn't born until 1776, so couldn't logically have been a soldier in the revolution. Old Times in Windham (Henry Hedges Prout) indicates that Jedediah died at age 82.... which would place his year of death at about 1823. "... it is certain that Mr. Hubbard was left in peaceful possession until the day when, at 82 years of age, he slept with his fathers."20,21 |
Burial* | Ashland Cemetery, Windham, Greene Co., New York, USA; Jedediah Hubbard's tomb-stone in the old grave yard has inscribed on it, "The first Deacon and the first Settler in Windham." 2003: What is visible from photo is: "In Memory of Jedediah Hubbard who died Dec 8. 1822; AE 82 y. Biography | Julius A. Hubbard, son of Alfred and Anna (Steele) Hubbard, came from Livingston Co., N. Y., in 1845, with his brother, Edward, who settled oil a farm in Troy. The father and sons, Ogden and Henry A., came later and settled in Spring Prairie. Julius A. married Joanna Elizabeth, a daughter of Nathan Adams, Sr., and settled in LaGrange. They lived for years on one of the farms owned by her father [actually, her grand Uncles] (the Witt. Branford place). As administers of the Adams estate they sold this farm to Gaylord Willsey (Joanna's brother], Feb. 5, 1856. After the death of her mother they moved to her home-the W 1/2 of NW 1/4 of See. 24-and purchased the farm. From this place their four children attended the Hill school and at this farm the post office was kept in the late fifties. The LaGrange Center people then had to take their turn in going three miles for their mail. In the late sixties this couple separated, the mother taking her daughters, Minnie and Alice, and younger son, Willie, to Michigan, leaving Frank with his father. Julius Hubbard married (2) Miss Emma Banker. In 1876 he sold his farm to Robt. Cross having moved the previous year, on account of his father's death, to the latter's home in Spring Prairie which he purchased. His wife died at this place. He sold the farm and went to Michigan making his home with his daughters summers and spending his winters with his relatives in Wisconsin. He married again in Michigan but when he died his remains were brought back and placed beside those of his second wife in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Spring Prairie. He liked fun and preferred file company of young people. 9
