News of the death of Romaine A. Hubbard at Belvider, Ill., was received here Friday. Mr. Hubbard had visited relatives and friends in this city a few weeks ago and at that timehe had suffered an attack of apoplexy. His death by the same disease did not come unexpectedly, therefore. Biography* | Mr. Stanley E. Hubbard Born 100 Years Ago Today… A Tribute Written By Stanley S. Hubbard Today, June 26, 1997, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Stanley E. Hubbard 1, who was the founder of our company. I hope that it might be somewhat interesting to some of the Hubbard Broadcasting Family to know a little bit about S.E. Hubbard I. My dear dad was born in Red Wing, Minnesota, where his father was Superintendent of Schools. When my dad was very young, his father was killed in a freak industrial accident. My grandmother then moved my father and his three brothers to Minneapolis and then to St. Paul. Stanley E. Hubbard was a very energetic and resourceful person, and for the family and for associates here at the company, it was often fun to hear him tell tales about his early days. For example, in the days before he was a teenager, doorbells were always operated by battery power, and even I remember when I was a young boy seeing cards or notes placed by doorbell buttons saying "out of order. " My dad figured out that all he would have to do was buy a bunch of batteries, ride around on his bicycle, look for out of order signs, go to the door and introduce himself as a doorbell repairman, replace the doorbell battery and make some money. Later when S.E. Hubbard entered high school, he got himself a job as an automobile salesman. His pitch to the automobile agency was this: "If you give me a job as an automobile salesman, I will try to get kids in school to talk their fathers into buying a car from your dealership." Mr. Hubbard was quite successful in this endeavor. I believe that these two anecdotes about SEH's youth serve to point out just how ambitious and creative he was. There were many interesting and exciting adventures which were a part of S.E. Hubbard's life a good example of which was his flying career. During his flying career, he was noted as probably the first person to commercially use radio direction finding equipment on an airplane, and he was reportedly the first person to ever drop a flare from an airplane to announce the results of the gubernatorial elections in New York state - a red flare if one candidate won and a green flare if the other won. He had many close calls in his early flying experiences. He started what may have been one of the first, if not the first, commercial airline-which went broke. He then moved back to Minnesota. Mr. Hubbard's broadcasting career began when he had the idea which he described in the following way. "I believed that if I could start a radio station and put something on the radio, other than a fat lady singing opera to the accompaniment of a piano, such as popular music, that I could then attract enough of an audience to sell advertising." During those days dance bands were very popular, and in the Twin Cities there were two major ballrooms, the Prom in St. Paul, and the Marigold Ballroom in Minneapolis. Stanley E. made a deal with I the Marigold Ballroom which provided that they would give him "a studio" if he would play the live dance music on his radio station during the evenings. That is how the call letters WAMD -Where All Minneapolis Dances-came to be WAMD later became KSTP (K-St. Paul). WAMD was somewhat successful - but not totally so. it was a very difficult struggle. The station was later moved to the old Radisson Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. My dad used to tell the story about the time the sheriff came to get his generator off the top floor of the Radisson Hotel. Things were not going too well at that time, and the station had trouble paying its bills, so a creditor obtained a court order by which they could take some equipment away from the radio station. Of course, if the creditor had been successful, the station would have been off the air and out of business. The sheriff came to the hotel to pick up the generator and the owner of the hotel, Mr. Simon Kruse, somehow got into the act, and he told the sheriff that he could not use the hotel elevator to move the generator. Mr. Kruse then told the sheriff that he better be careful, cause if he were to damage any of the hotel taking the generator down the stairs, that the hotel would hold the sheriff liable. The sheriff did not get the generator, the station stayed on the air, Mr. Hubbard paid his and continued to build his business. In 1923, Mr. Hubbard married Alice Rochford. From this marriage came my sister, Alice Liptak. Alice's mother died shortly after child birth. Sometime later, in 1932, my dad married my mother, Didrikke Stub, whose father was a Lutheran minister in Minneapolis. From that marriage came me and my brother, Richard, who died in an automobile accident in 1972. In the old days - 1923 to the 1960s - the broadcasting business was very much different than it is today. Broadcasting was a business which was populated by pioneers-people who were truly new frontiersmen. People got into the broadcasting satisfaction of being a part of a communication's medium which they believed would cause profound changes in the world. Of course, early broadcasters were correct, because radio became not only an important entertainment medium, but a major news medium and a major medium for the delivery of political messages. In 1939 my dad and mother, who had been hearing about television, went to the World's Fair and had the opportunity to see television demonstrated. The excitement surrounding the demonstration of television was such that Mr. Hubbard purchased the first television camera from RCA which was ever sold to a broadcast station. In the summer of 1939, KSTP demonstrated live television by doing a closed-circuit feed of an American Legion parade in downtown Minneapolis Mr. Hubbard made predictions about the future of television, which at the time were considered to be outlandish. He predicted, for example, that television would some day be used to monitor the movement of inmates in Prisons, and he also predicted that everyone Would have a television set in their home and would be able to watch news and entertainment programs. Along came World War 11 and television had to be put on the back burner until after the war. Most people who are a part of the Hubbard Broadcasting family have no idea about the attitude which people had towards television in 1947 when commercial service first began. At that time no one took it seriously. An American citizen, by merely mailing a postcard, would have had a chance to obtain a television license. Very few people applied for a license, however, because very few could envision the role television would one day play. The hurdles which had to be crossed in order to begin a successful television station seemed insurmountable. I remember clearly just how difficult it was for my dad to try to obtain any funding for the start up of KSTP-TV. Private investors thought he was crazy Bankers were unwilling to even consider loaning the one million dollars that was required to start a television station. People thought that TV would be a passing ad and that it was a toy with no future. Mr. Hubbard thought differently, and even though he owned a successful 50,000 watt NBC-affiliated radio station, he could not interest bankers or investors in helping start TV. It was a stroke of good fortune that someone suggested he call a Mr. Ralph Euler at the Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh. I remember the summer of 1947 when my dad, mother, brother and I drove to Pittsburgh, the home of the Mellon Bank. My dad was able to mortgage his radio station for one million dollars. Mr. Euler told my dad that the Mellon Bank, "Would rather bet on people than on horses and that they were betting on him. " It was that trip to Pittsburgh that made KSTP-TV possible. In April of 1948, KSTP-TV signed on the air, and, of course, we all know what happened as a result of that sign on. As I think back to the really difficult times that our family went through to get KSTP-TV off the ground, I am reminded of a great lesson about life-seldom do many people envision the potential for a great idea such as television. I remember going to school and having my friends tell me that my dad was crazy. I remember traveling with my dad to radio conventions in Chicago where he would try to tell his old radio friends from across the country that they ought to get into television. I remember some of these same people becoming bitter old men, because they were afraid to get into television and had "missed the boat. " Back in 1947 and 1948, my dad could have done that which most radio operators did. He could have sat back, relaxed and enjoyed life as did so many other radio operators who believed that television would never become a very important medium. I remember, for example, a meeting I attended where the chairman of the FCC, Mr. Lawrence Fly, came to the old Nicollet Hotel in Minneapolis where he and my dad spoke to broadcasters from Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Western Wisconsin in an attempt to convince those people that they should start up television stations-few did. Once television did begin, success was not a certainty. It took years for television to be able to pay its own way. It was difficult to get programming. At first there was only one television station in the Twin Cities and that was KSTP-TV. In the early days, if a person bought a television set, as hard as it is to imagine today, they were able to receive only one channel. As time went by, more channels were added, and when the day came that there were three or four channels, people generally began to realize that television might have an important future. Mr. Hubbard was what I would call a practical dreamer. He had all sorts of ideas. He loved to hear the ideas of others, and he had a good sense about what could be popular. He was a showman. He loved the theater, and he loved bringing live television productions, such as ice shows and other productions, to the people of the Twin Cities area. He had a sixth sense about news, and he understood what it was that would interest people in the area of news. He loved new technology. For example, KSTP-TV was the first television station in the world to be 100% color. KSTP-TV was the first station to have regularly scheduled daily newscasts. KSTP-TV was the first station to have color film processing so news could be brought to the viewers in color within less than an hour after an event had occurred. Mr. S.E. Hubbard and the people of KSTP did remarkable things. I remember in 1981, after I had first seen high definition television, I told my dad what I had seen and asked him for his opinion. At that time he told me that in his opinion, "HDTV is an engineer's play thing." He did not believe in 1981 that HDTV would amount to much as far as home application is concerned. It appears that one day soon we are going to find out if Mr. Hubbard was correct as to the future of HDTV. Mr. Hubbard was always the defender and protector of the underdog. I cannot tell you how many times he personally, or KSTP-TV or KSTP Radio would get involved in trying to help people who were being ill-treated by the government, the police, or powerful institutions, and who were not able to defend themselves. Mr. Hubbard always thought of the people of KSTP, and later of Hubbard Broadcasting, as a family. Time and time again he helped people who were part of the Hubbard Broadcasting Family and no one knew of it except those who had come to him for guidance or for help. He was a person who believed in loyalty. He felt that he was loyal to his friends and employees and that they should likewise be loyal to him. It hurt him greatly if he thought that someone might have done something that was disloyal or dishonest. Integrity was his byword, and be would never knowingly have done anything dishonest. All during the years as my brother, sister and I were growing up, we were constantly reminded about the importance of telling the truth and of treating other people fairly-we all have tried to take that to heart. Although I am obviously prejudiced, I can say from first-hand experience that Mr. Hubbard was what we would call a really "good guy" who contributed a great deal to society and made life exciting and rewarding for his family, friends, and employees. As time went on and the company grew larger, many people were intimidated by his presence, merely because he was the founder of the company; but all those in the company who knew him well-whether they were managers, producers, maintenance people, or carpenters - knew that they could look to Mr. S.E. Hubbard for a laugh, a kind word, or help. My mother died in 1974, sometime later my dad married Mary Jane Hubbard. Mary Jane was a wonderful wife for all the years of their marriage up until the time my dad died in December 1992. Mary Jane now lives in Bal Harbour, Florida, and spends part of each summer in Minnesota. This short sketch about Stanley E. Hubbard I is not very complete, but it was put together and distributed out of a great feeling of love, admiration and respect for a man without whom there would never have been a company called Hubbard Broadcasting.

Anecdote | 21 Nov 1917 | Camp Wadsworth, Spartanburg, Spartanburg Co., South Carolina; The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, NY, Wednesday, Nov 21, 1917 in a column containing news of Camp Wadsworth: Besides being an efficient soldier, Private Stanley E. Hubbard of Company B, Second Signal Bettery, who resides at 2105 Foster avenue, is a dare-devil auto racer. During the auto races staged at the fair grounds on Saturday, Hubbard took a practice spin around the dangerous half mile track in Fred "Slim" Lecklider's record holding Dusenberg car. Hubbard covered a mile in 1 minute, 2 seconds. In rounding the turns the card skidded into dangerous positions and it looked as if it were going to crash into the fence, but the plucky young solder was equal to the task and righted the machine each time. In one of the races he acted as Lecklider's mechanician. In a twenty-five mile race when Lecklider had a blowout Hubbard changed the wheel in the fast time of twenty-three seconds. It is said Hubbard is a professional driver. |

Biography | Stanley S. Hubbard remembering stories his Dad told him about his years in and around WWI: ??I remember him telling me that he went to Europe at least once as a cadet - I believe on the American lines. While in England, he met a girlfriend named Gwen. He said that the British already had barrage balloons flying and England was getting ready for war with Germany. Gwen told him, “Stanley, if you love me, you will join the British army and fight for England.” He said that he told Gwen, “I love you, but I am going home.” ??While he was living in New York with his brother, he noticed the National Guard had horses which they could ride in Central Park. He said he was told if he joined the National Guard, he could get a horse. So that is how he came to join the National Guard. ??He told me he ended up being a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and he was very, very proud of the fact that he was put in charge of a company of black soldiers, then known as negroes. He said that his job was to go in and help these people gain self-respect and respect for authority, and he felt that he did a good job in that regard.

Anecdote* | 30 Mar 1922 | Miami, Dade Co., Florida; CHARGES AGAINST ONE PROHIBITION MAN FAILS Hubbard Not Guilty of Taking Woman's Car Without Her Permssion Stanley Hubbard, government pilot in charge of internal revenue planes cooperating with Col. L.G. Nutt's prohibition raiders, was discharged from custody Thursday by County Judge Blanton after hearing the testimony of all concerned in the charge that he had taken Mrs. Mabel Hubbard's care without her permission. The testimony developed the fact that while A.H. Hubbard, husband of Mrs. Mabel Hubbard, was in Key West, his wife got Stanley Hubbard, no relation, to teach her how to handle the car. They had driven out several times together and Mrs. Hubbard admitted she went to the Jungle Inn with him and drank two cocktails. The issue hinged on whether Mrs. Mabel Hubbard had or had not expressly told Stanley Hubbard on Saturday, March 18, that when she was not using the car he could. Judge Blanton held that there was nothing in the evidence to show that the defendent had taken and used the car without her permission. Proceedings were enlived when Stanley Hubbard, cross examining Mrs. Hubbard, told the court she "was lying." A.H. Hubbard made a rush for him, but Tom Foreman, prohibition agent, intervened. Stanley Hubbard apologized for the remark. from the Miami News, 30 March 1922 |

Biography* | Jim McGovern, says several things about Will Hubbard, in his "book noir" on Will's brother, Stanley E. Hubbard. McGovern had an axe to grind with SEH that colored many of his statements. It was his take that Stanley took credit for many of Will's accomplishments in the "Louisville Days". My opinion (Dixie Hansen) is that McGovern made these statements without actually doing any research into the facts. My own belief, based on newspaper articles from Louisville and Louisville company records in the HBI archives, is that Will and Stanley were both substantially equally involved in all 3 ventures (Mattingly-Hubbard Motors, Kentucky Aeroplane Supply, and Ohio Valley Transport) and that Stanley E. was probably more involved in the promotional end of things (and thus got all of the press). In the New York venture (Seaboard Consolidated) I believe the records suggest that SEH was the main player. In fact (to date) I haven't discovered any record of Will's involvement at all (which is not to say he wasn't). In any case, here are McGovern's thoughts: [1918] Will Hubbard took the whole Hubard crew to Louisville, KY. Will established a number of ventures in the field of aviation. Will was president of the Mattingly-Hubbard Motor Company in Louisville. Hubbard Field in Louisville was named for Will Hubbard. (now named Bowman Field) Will was president of the ill-fated Kentucky Aero Supply Company and the Ohio Valley Aero Transport Company. Kentucky Aero Supply was formed "out of blue-sky stock, to produce an odd-looking air crate called by the tongue-twisting name of the Kasco Trois. The company never managed to produce even a prototype type and the Hubbards had to leave Louisville for St. Paul shortly after, leaving a number of Louisville stockholders in an angry mood. This is not to say that the Hubbard were run out of town, but they did leave rather quickly." Will Hubbard had been the chief promoter of all of these Louisville enterprises including an abortive attempt to start a company called Seaboard Airlines. Seaplanes had become dirt cheap when the navy no longer had to patrol the coasts looking for German submarines and this is what was going to carry passengers in Hubbard's "airline" but that venture also crashed almost as soon as it took off... Even if one considers Will Hubbard's proposed Louisville to Cincinnati passenger airline which turned into a $5 a hop joy ride company that would land them 'on any vacant lot' it was in short operation in 1921.

Death* | c 1925 | Dyer Street, Burlington, Walworth Co., Wisconsin; Newspaper Clipping: WILLIAM H. HUBBARD PASSES AWAY MONDAY WAS AN OLD RESIDENT AND MEMBER OF COUNTY BOARD SEVERAL YEARS FUNERAL HELD ON WEDNESDAY Hubbard William Hubbard was called in death early Monday morning at his home on Dyer Street. He had been in failing health for some time but was confined to his bed only two days when the angel of death came and released him from the infirmities of old age. William Henry Hubbard was a son of Halsey and Cornelia Hubbard and was born at Mt. Morris, New York, March 16th, 1843, and came with his parents to the town of Spring Prairie when a boy of twelve years, which place was his home until twelve years ago when he and his wife came to Burlington to reside. On Feb. 7, 1866, he was united in marriage with Martha Aldrich, who was his faithful helpmate until she was called by death Aug. 5, 1920. To this union two children were born, Angelia, Mrs. Edward Luedke of Milwaukee, who was called in death in 1919, and Ira A. Hubbard, who has faithfully cared for his parents until death claimed them. One sister, Mrs. Laura Hendrix of Oakland, Calif., and four grandchildren, Iris and Halsey Hubbard of Burlington, Edward A. Luedke, Jr. of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Derkman, Princeton, New Jersey, are also left to mourn the loss of a kind father and grandfather. Always a kind and sunny dispositiion he has made many staunch friends who were grieved to hear of his illness and death. Mr. Hubbard was supervisor of the Second ward in this city for a number of years and was always noted for his honest and straight forward ways in all business transactions and for his always having a kind word and smile for those with whom he came in contact. It can well be said another good man has gone to his just reward. The funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock and his remains laid to rest beside those of his wife in the town cemetery. Rev. C.E. Huntington conducted the funeral services.7 |

He was between 50 and 55 years of age and formerly resided here, being a brother of Frank Hubbard, of the town of Troy. Wm. Hubbard was deaf and was going in the same direction of the car walking between the tracks. The motorman sounded the whistle and gave warning by shouting but to no avail as he was run over and horribly mangled. No blame was attached to the motorman and were it not for the fact that the unforutunate man was hard of hearing the accident no doubt would not have happened.11,5 |

Hubbard, of this city, left on July 1 for an extended eastern tour. His mission and the result are fully explained by the following article, taken from the Perry, N.Y. Times of July 22: The Hubbard-Hutton weding last week was a pleasing social orrurence at the resident of John B. Hutton, Grace Winifred to Parris P. Hubbard, a young business man of the firm of Hubbard & Carman, of Cheney, Wash. The Rev. CH. Dibble officiated in the presence of some sixty guests, some of whom were from Warren, Warsaw and Chicago. The fair bride was tastefully attired in a handsome dress of delicate corn color, with Marshal Neil roses. The groom wore the conventional black dress suit, and looke the joy he felt in securing such a charming bride. The presents were both numerous and valuable, including a cheque for $100 from Mr. J. B. Hutton, many of the gifts came from a distance some coming from California and the west. On Wednesday at 5:05 p.m. the happy couple left for a short visit among friends in Chicago and other points west, after which they will leave for the new home in Cheney, Wash. The Times joins wishes with other Perry friends for their success and happiness and a long life of usefulness. Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard returned home last Saturday morning and have taken up thier abode in their cosy new cottage at the corner of Sixth and F streets. Note* | From Joyce Ryll to Sally Severson: They immigrated to America from Aardal, Norway, in 1846. Christen and sons, Tom and Hoover, are thought to be about the first to arrive of those who were to be members of the Kickapoo Church, est. 1853. They came to the Kickapoo area with the Fortney's around 1853. To the Hooverson home, came the Edre Hestitune family, illustrating the bounteous hospitality of the immigrant cabin dweller. In December 1854, Tom Hestitune was born. He and the Hooverson baby girl, Dena, were carried to West Prairie for Christening.2

Gerhard Ilgner
M
Marriage* | 26 Nov 1914 | Lyons, Walworth Co., Wisconsin; Newspaper Clipping - with notation added: Nov 26,1914 Married Thanksgiving Day. A pretty wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Stubbs in the village of Lyons at high noon on Thanksgiving day when their daughter Daisy, became the wife of Gerhard Ilgner, of Milwaukee. Standing before the corner of the parlor, prepared for the occasion with potted ferns and floral decorations, the officiating clergyman Rev. C.A. Tuttle, of the Methodist church, awaited the coming of the bridal couple. Mrs. C.R. Dyke, of Troy Cneter, played the wedding march, while the bride, attended by Miss Dagmar Rasmussen, of Racine, as bridesmaid and the groom by his brother, Howard, as best man, took their places and assumed the vowes not easily broken. In spite of earlier resolves the catch of a sob here and there among the company could not be entirely hidden. And why not? Is it a trivial matter to see the daughter of a home step into a new relation of life that successfully changes the family ties? The bride wore a gown of white crepe de chine and tull and carried an old-fashioned bouquet of lilies of the valley and cyclomen, while the bridesmaid wore pink crepe de chine and Bohemian lace and carried pink roses. Following the wedding came a dinner to which all were ushered. Among those present were Mrs. Augusta Bennett of Beloit, Mr. and Mrs. H.N. Stubbs and Miss Olive Stubbs, of Elkhorn; Miss Montgomery of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Wellington of Harvard, Ill., Isabel Mueller, Ernest Mueller, and Miss Loraraine Maas of Milwaukee. Mr. and Mrs. Ilgner will make their home in Milwaukee.; Principal=Daisy Stubbs1,2,3,4 |
