Note* | | About "Johnson" vs. "Reese"
Bertha's father Christopher Johnson was born on the Rise (AKA Riise, AKA Riese) farm in Norway. In th US, however, he appears to have used his patronymic name "Johnson" as his chosen surname... as did his children when they were young.
Bertha is listed as Betsey and Bertha Johnson in the 1860 and 1870 census records respectively. When she married in 1878 her name before marriage was given as "Berthe Johnson." That evidence supports the idea that she went directly from "Bertha Johnson" to her married name of "Bertha Hooverson."
Sometime between 1880 and around the turn of the century, long after their father died in 1875, ) his sons (and perhaps unmarried daughters) began using the name "Reese" or "Riese" as their surnames - obviously taking that name from their father's farm name. Torger used "Reese" and John and Christopher used "Riese."
Although Bertha may not (probably did not) ever actively use the name Bertha Reese - she is remembered by the family with the maiden name of "Bertha Reese." On Bertha's death certificate her adopted daughter, Marie gave the name of Bertha's father as "Christopher Reese" and when daughter Aleda died, her mother's name at birth is listed as Bertha Reese. A grand-daughter was named Bertha Reese (or Rees?) Stub.
Even Christopher Johnson's widow Gunilda, eventually converted her married name from Johnson to Riese and her obituary in the Decorah Posten in 1918 lists her husband's name as Christopher Johnson Reese.; Principal=Christopher Nitter Johnson |

From De Norske Settlementers Historie by Hjalmar Rued Holand (1909), as translated by Malcolm Rosholt (1987).
Extract from Chapter XXI - Vernon and Crawford Counties:
In 1851 a man from Sogn by the name of Ingebret Hess came to Coon Prairie. As he could not find the kind of land he was looking for he continued 25 miles southwest along the ridges until he came to a plain which was known as West Prairie. Here he began farming on a piece of land which is now used for the parsonage on the boundary between Vernon and Crawford counties. He was from Lyster in Sogn. and was the founder of the first settlement of Sogn people in America. There was more discussion heard in Lyster about Crawford and Vernon counties than any other prospective destination.
Ness returned to Koshkonong a year or two and worked until 1853 when he came back to Coon Prairie accompanied by a number of people from Lyster, among then Ole Runnice (originally Ronnei), Soren Jerman, Kristoffer Johnson, (usually called "California-Johnson"), Anders and Skak Thompson Sandvik, Herman Larson Runice, Lars Christenson, Anders and Jens Call (originally Kilen), and Christian C. Olson.
Many arrived that same year from Flekkefjord, among them Ole O. Rosenwater from Heggebostad and Didrik Olson White (originally Mjøvand) from Fjøtland. White was the first person to settle in the Sugar Creek valley.
There was also a Halling by the name of Jorgen "Buckcreek" Lee who came with the first pioneers, a great one to carouse around and fight. Tall stories about him are still circulated by the Irish around the village of Rising Sun. It was probably an overwheening pride in his nationality which forced him to behave in the manner he did because he seldom fought with his own people. One time in a saloon he engaged 11 Irishmen but when it was over he was so beaten up himself he could scarcely walk home.
Over in Kickapoo, 10 miles east of West Prairie, other families from Lysterfjord and Ardal began to settle at this time. Arriving in 1853 was the large Fortney (originally Forhun) family which included several brothers, their wives and children. Accompanying them were Gunerius Olson from Aasness in Solør and Christian Hooverson Nundal from Sogn. Arriving in 1854 were Anders Olson Hestehun, Anders Thompson Nundal, one of the strongest men in Ardal, in addition to Anders Bottolfson and Nils Peterson Bjørkum. The last named was a gifted and enterprising man and father to the well-known Utley Peterson in Soldiers Grove.
As early as 1855 a congregation was organized on Coon Prairie and in Kickapoo. (Norsk Lutherske Menigheter i Amerika gives 1853 as the date of organization for Coon Prairie. The identity of the Kickapoo congregation is not clear. This was once a post office in Kickapoo township, Vernon county, but has been discontinued and the name itself is not included on modern maps of Wisconsin, -ed.)
The indefatigable Pastor H.A. Stub found his way up to these hills of the Sogn people and after this visit, regular worship services were inaugurated. Nils Peterson's house was small but the best there was and therefore used for worship services, When night came, the one room which was also used for kitchen and sleeping quarters, was reserved for the visiting pastor while Peterson and his family slept in the loft. As the loft was seldom used there was no need for a stairway, but on these special occasions, Peterson climbed up through the rafters and pulled his wife and children up after him and everyone slept soundly.
Pastor Nils Brandt was the first Norwegian pastor to visit Vernon county. He stayed with Even Gullord in 1852 and after giving instructions to 12 confirmands in a five-day cram session, confirmed them all at the house of H.A. Neperud. One of these confirmands was Berthe Bakkum, originally from Biri, who later married Jeremiah Rusk who rose to rank of general in the Civil War, was elected governor of Wisconsin, and finally made a member of the President's cabinet in Washington.
Although the terrain in this region is hilly and rough, it was nevertheless considered highly desirable by the people of Lysterfjord and Alik-Ardal, soon the people from Sogn district began moving in to such an extent that the various settlements are now welded into one.
Ingebret Ness and "California-Johnson" were brothers-in-law and good friends. Both were also big men and strong. But one night, after they had been touring the saloons of Rising Sun, they began to argue about who was the strongest. Ness said he could manage anyone in the community. Furthermore, he was certainly the founder of the settlement and a little respect should be shown him. But "California-Johnson" thought this was plain nonsense for any housecat like Ingebret to make anyone believe that he was a scrapper. How could he compare to one who had been all the way to California, fought with gold diggers and Indians, struggled the length and breath of Mormon country where, in addition, mountain lions and rattlesnakes were as thick as flies! Finally they agreed that the answer to this weightly problem could not be put off till morning and despite the darkness and a light rain, they jumped off their wagon, tied up the horses in the brush and tore into each other. The following morning the battleground looked like two elephants had been wrestling there.
Ingebret's wife, a sister of "California-Johnson" was a woman of great humor who could entertain the whole neighborhood with her whims and conceits. It was she who got people to change their good old Norwegian names. Her husband's name she got changed from Ingebret Ness to Albert Nash; Ronnei to Runnice; Kilen to Call; Mjøvand to White, etc. Apparently to keep people's minds from completely stagnating, she managed to start all kinds of quarrels among them. She never gave her husband a moment's rest either and he finally went off to war and was killed. After that she turned Methodist and toured the countryside holding noisy revival meetings. Of her deeds and accomplishments there are still legends.
The 1850s in America saw hard times. The decade or so preceding the Civil War was a period of great unrest and business in general was paralyzed. The effects of this monetary crises was felt in the farthest corners of the land, and overall ran a spirit of despondency, shiftlessness and misery.
The newcomers who came to settle here during these trying times had therefore to contend with a very unfavorable climate in the national economy. This was especially true in the case of Coon Prairie and neighboring districts which for a number of years were considered the last outposts of civilization) north and west….
==============================
From History of Vernon Co. (1884), page 651:
Christopher N. Johnson was one of the first Norwegians to settle in Sterling town. He emigrated to America in 1847, and settled in Dane Co., Wis., where he remained until 1849. He then went to California, to mine for gold, and in 1853 came to Bad Ax (now Vernon) county, and entered land in town 12 north, of range 5 west, in territory now included in the land of Sterling. He improved this land and made it his home until his death, which occurred in November, 1875. Mr. Johnson was twice married. His second wife, to whom he was married in 1857, was Gunelda Fortner. She is the mother of six living children - John C., Margaret, Christine, Ellen, Torger N. and Christopher N. Two of the daughters are teachers in the public schools and are meeting with great success. By his integrity and untiring benevolence, Mr. Johnson won the confidence and esteem of the new comers, by whom he was looked up to as "a father of his country," and to whom they came for counsel and advice. They were always welcome at his house, which was to them as an oasis in the desert, and were received with greatest hospitality. Long will he live in the memory of his countrymen, who came here in those dark and dreary days when want and the desolate prairie stared them in the face, and the Indian was whoop was heard on every side. Then it was that they found in Christopher Johnson a true and constant friend. |
