Biography* | | Robert W. Holmen: Except that her name was Sjogren [sic], I know nothing of her family. My first recollection of her begins when I was about three. We lived in a duplex in Mpls. on Elliot Ave between 33 and 34th St. (perhaps 3330 or so being the address). She had come for a visit, 1/2 of her children here. Incidentally, her crowning visit here lasted 10 years. She was fat as most women of her age in that day were. Strange that I should remember her birthday - it was Jan 18. Grandma, during her 10 year visit never learned to speak English. But she knew more than she let on - as storekeepers who tried to cheat her quickly discovered. She was a smart, shrewd woman. Sharp tongued and caustic, and never one to show affection. I can never remember that she fondled or petted me or even held me on her lap.1 |

Biography* | | Jack Stub: Nana (Anna Skabo) his third wife, just oozed hospitality. She came from a wealthy family and had a companion, Berthe, brought up to be her maid servant. Berthe was always smiling, as was Nana, every time I saw either of them.
When H.G. died, they went back to Norway and were in Oslo during the occupation. Berthe was killed in an accident involving a streetcar. Right after Norway was liberated Uncle Hans received a frantic letter from Nana, asking what terrible trouble I was in. The Navy Department, in the process of issuing me a top secret clearance and in their usual ham-handed manner, had two agents question Nana to determine if I had any communist antecedents. Nana gave all her money to help war refugees. I'm sure she died a very happy woman.3 |

Birth* | 14 Apr 1641 | Sandwich, Massachusetts1 |
Marriage* | c 1665 | Principal=Lydia Snow1 |
Will* | 7 May 1701 | Sandwich, Massachusetts; The will of Stephen Skeffe of Sandwich dated 7 May 1701, codicil dated 20 Aug. 1708, proved 28 June 1710, names wife Lydia; granddau. Keziah; son Stephen; daughters Abigail Smith, Deborah Presbury, Mary Chipman and Lydia Blackwell. The codicil says granddau. Keziah was given her things upon her marriage. His inventory says he died 8 June 1710.
Note: There is some speculation on who grand-daugher Keziah is - as she is most likely not actually a legitimate daughter of any of Stephen's children. Theories suggest that she was either the daughter of Stephen Presbury before he married Stephen's daughter Deborah - or Deborah's illegitmate daughter. 1 |

Frank J. Smith, age 90, well known mining executive, passed away on Aug. 7, in Miami, Fla., where he had made his home for the past 19 years.
Mr. Smith was formerly vice president in charge of iron ore operations fro Oglebay Norton Co. when he retired on April 30, 1957, after completing 48-1/2 years of service with the company, including properties in Michigan, Wisconisn and Minnesota and was transferred to Duluth, Minn. in January 1951 from the company's northern office in Montreal, Wis.
Mr. Smith was born in Bridgman, Mich., on March 18, 1886, attended high school in Grand Rapids, Mich., and was graduated from Michigan Technological University, Houghton, with a Bachelor of Science and Engineer of Mines degrees, where he was elected to the honorary scholastic engineering fraternity, Tau Beta Pi. After graduation from college, Mr. Smith began his career in Commonwealth, Wis., later being transferred to Stambaugh, Mich., then on to Crystal Falls, and then to Ramsay, Mich., in 1942 where he resided until he was moved to Duluth.
For the last 20 years that he was employed, Mr. Smith played an active role in the development of the taconite industry. In this period the company pursued an extensive study of long range iron ore supplied upon depletion of high grade iron ore, acquired magnetic taconite reserves on the east Mesabi range, and incorporated Reserve Mining Co. His responsibilities included the adminstraiton of planning, research, and development in connection with the Reserve Mining Co.'s taconite project at Babbitt and Silver Bay, Minn.
Always an active participant in educational, industrial, community, and civic affairs, under his administration many improvements were accomplished in the communities at the mining properties.
