Stpehen S. Babcock

Stephen S. Babcock, of Delavan, died in Alabama last Sunday morning. He went to Alabama a few weeks since to pass the winter, as he has done during a number of other years. He had been in poor health all summer and it was hoped that the change in climate would benefit him. But it did not, and Sunday saw his last day.

Mr. Babcock was a native of New York, born in June 1824, hence was seventy years of age. He came to Delavan in 1846, and had been an honored citizen of the county since then. He was sheriff two terms, and no better officer or more honorable man ever held the position. He was a grand, good man, and hundreds of friends will mourn his death.

The burial was at Florence, Alabama, on Wednesday.

One was Nearly Ninety Six the Other in Her Nienty Fourth Year - Funerals Held Monday - Interment at Hazel Ridge

Died, at Elkhorn, Nov. 8, 1907, Mrs. Hannah L. Pettit, aged nearly nienty-six years. Her last few years exacted of her their usual tribute of informity and suffering; but for many years previously, she was one of those favored persons whose lives seem prolonged in order that it may be seen that ripe old age many have its own peculiar beauty and grace.

Hannah Simmons Barlow, daughter of Nehemia Barlow and Orinda Steele, was born at Windham, Greene Co., N.Y. , Nov. 23, 1811. She was married at Batavia, N.Y., about 1841, to William Harrison Pettit, a young lawyer who, having all the world before him came to Delavan about 1843. In 1848, having been chosen clerk of the circuit, he moved to Elkhorn. Of their six children three were taken early, three are left. In 1865 Mr. Pettit died at Washington, D.C.

In 1830 Mrs. Pettit had received the Episcopal rite of confirmation from Rt. Rev. Benjamin Tredwell Onderdonk, and thenceforward proved her faith by her abundant good works. She was personally acquainted with Rt. Rev. Jackson Kemper and with all his successors in the bishopric of Wisconsin and that of Milwaukee and possessed their marked esteem and confidence. In time of civil war she was active in all local movement for the benefit of sick and wounded soldiers in the field. Whether busied with domestic duties, with the varied work of her church, or with the patriotic cares, she brought to her service intelligence, noiseless zeal, and practical skill.1

BRIG. GEN BARLOW
DIES IN FOREIGN LAND

Was long a Well KNown Resident of Walworth County.

Brig. Gen. J.W. Barlow, U.S.A., retired, died in Jerusalem Monday, while on an extended European trip. No particulars of his death, further than brief dispatches in the newspapers have been received here. He was well known to many of the older residents of the county, and it was from here that he received his West Point appointment.

John Whitney Barlow was the youngest son of Nehemiah Barlow and Orinda Steele, who were of the oldest families in Connecticut. He was born about 1838 at Perry, N.Y., and his family came the next year to the town of Delavan. His brothers and sisters were Henry, Stephen Steele, William Augustus, Mrs. Hannah S. Pettit, Mrs. Eliza Jane Babcock, Mrs. Mary Fuller, Mrs. Sarah Hunt, Mrs. Harriet Bulkley, Mrs. Emily W. Pettit.

In 1857 Hon. John F. Potter nemed him for cadetship, and he was graduated in time for promotions to second and first lieutenancies in the 2nd U.S. Artillery, May 1861, for instant service in the Army of the Potomac. He received several brevets for distinguished services, and went through all the grades, during the war and afterward, until his retirement in 1901 as brigadier-general. In 1863 he was transfered to engineer corps, and some further promotion before Atlanta and Nashville. After the war, and until placed on retired list, he was in charge of the Muscle Shoals (Tenessee River) improvements, and other important engineering works.

From a dispatch to the Milwaukee Sentinel it is learned that Gen. Barlow died at Jerusalem, "the holy city", Monday, March 2, 1914. The records of his honorably useful public service tells its story to such as knew how to read it. For the rest, he was a kindly, unassuming American gentlleman, as many at Delavan, Elkhorn, and elsewhere will remember. This farmer's son was one of the growing roll of men and women whose character, ability, and public usefulness have made the personal history of the county worthy of the attention and interest of coming generations.3

WILLIAM A. BARLOW DIED SUDDENLY YESTERDAY

Was Sick Only Few Hours - Had Reached Seventy-ninth Year - Funeral to be Held Saturday Afternoon.

William A. Barlow died at his home in this city yesterday at ten o'clock in the forenoon after an acute illness of only a few hours duration. He was 79 years of age.

About 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon Mr. Barlow was taken suddenly with severe pains, his ailment later being diagnosed by Dr. Marah, the family physician, as due to a telescoping of the bowels. Though for 20 years or more in extremely poor health, Mr. Barlow, up to supper time Tuesday, felt as well as usual. Th news of his death came as a shock to his friends who had greeted him down town only a few hours before.

William Augustus Barlow was born June 3, 1820 at Mount Morris, N.Y. His parents were Nathaniel and Orinda Barlow and he was one of eleven children, the only survivor being Brig. Gen. John W. Barlow, retired, of New London, Conn.

Mr. Barlow came west in 1843 to Delavan with his parents. A few years later be moved to Elkhorn and about 1853 he became identified with the business interests of the village as a hardware merchant. Oct. 4, 1855 he was married to Almira Mallory, daughter of two of Elkhorn's old time residents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Mallory. To her there goes out the deep sympathy of many old freinds in this city.

Mr. Barlow in spite of the infirmities of the last score of years or more, kept in active touch with affairs of the day. SInce sometime in the 80's he has conducted a plantation near Florence, Ala., having become interested at that time in the prospects of northern Alabama. He was resourceful, an evidnece of his industry and activity being the well remembered Barlow stove, a superior heater at the time of it's invention by Mr. Barlow. The stove was manufactured in Troy. N.Y. and for several years after he retired from the rdware business in Elkhorn, Mr. Barlow travelled from Troy , N.Y. and for several years after he retired from the hardware business in Elkhorn, Mr. Barlow travelled from Troy in the interests of the stove foundary.

In 1866 Mr. Barlow established himself in business in Chicago and continued there until the great fire of '71, which burned him out. Since the purchase of his Alabama property he first usually spent the summer months in this city.

Mr. Barlow was a mason, one of the earliest members of the Elkhorn lodge. An early communicant of the Epsicopal church in this city, he helped lay the cornerstone of the first church edifice erected here. Long years of active life are closed with his honor.

The funeral will be under the direction of the Masonic Lodge of this city, the services being at the Episcopal church Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Reve. John White of Christ church, Delavan, officiating. Burial will be at Hazel Ridge.

-------------

The funeral of the late Wm. A. Barlow was held in this city Saturday afternoon from St. John's Episcopal church, Rev. John White of Christ church, Delavan, officiating. The Masonic fraternity attended in a body, the services at Hazel Ridge, where Mr. Barlow was buried, being those of the order. The bearers were W.D. Lyon, J.H. Derthick, J.H. Snyder, Chas. Dunlaf F. Birth*c 1666 Grytingen1
Marriage*1700 Principal=Anna Rasmusdotter1
Employment*a 1700 Holma, Herrestad Parish, Göteborg och Bohus, Sweden; Rusthållare1
Will*24 Mar 1735 Ulla-Britt Homqvist writes:

I have recently read some microfilms concerning judicial acts from Lane district court, which covers Herrestad, Skredsvik and Högås where your Swedish ancestors lived. I found a will written in 1735 in Holma written by nr 5 below Anders Bengtsson
....

Let me introduce you to one of your ancesters.:

Anders Bengtsson was born around 1666 and married Anna Rasmusdotter in 1700 and moved to Holma. He became a “Rusthållare” which means that the farm was a horsement equipment and Anders kept a dragoon with clothing and accouterments as well as a horse with trappings. The dragoon had a croft as well and some payment in cash. When he was not on duty, he worked at the farm. For this Anders got tax abatement. He was free from conscription and he also was free from transports of people and goods when the inn keepers ordered help.

Anders and Anna had 7 children, 5 daughters, 2 sons Ifwar and Jacob, who married girls from Herrestad and moved to their homes.

In 1735 Anders and his wife Anna make their will. He declares that he is poor and week (he is 69) and he can no longer manage the farm and the expenses of the horsement equipment. And his children who he thought would have been a help to him in his old days they have moved “searched their luck” elsewhere. Three of the daughters are still unmarried, but the eldest of them is soon to marry and Anders and Anna have decided to make their intended son-in-law Nils Olsson their heir. He is of good family and has a good economy. They give him the right of possession to ¼ of Holma included the horsement equipment to use, cultivate and possess and they give to Nils Olsson half of all their belongings.

They make an agreement that when the old people die, their son-in-law shall arrange such an honourable funeral, as any honourable Man or Wife in the parish gets after its death, and since there are still two daughters in the family, who are not provided for, so shall Nils Olsson , if it pleases God that they come into marriage, be under the obligation of giving them honourable weddings and giving them dowries as the other children have received.

The will also said: ”Since my son-in-law is the owner of a quarter of a seine, so shall I as long as I live and the ship can earn some farthings, be equal with him in sharing the profits. This shall unalterably be kept on both sides as well of me as of my Wife and Son-in-law in what is written now in our lifetime and after our death and no one can dispute or speak against it, which we to greater assurance sign with our names and usual private mark”. Holma 24 Mars 1735.

Anna Rasmusdotter Anders Bengtsson Nils Olsson

Just imagine, this was written 270 years ago and it is still readable (in Swedish). Hope my Swenglish is readable too. I might have used funny words. The PC did not like some of them.
