Albert P. McIntyre1

M, b. August 1845, d. March 1925
Biography* A. P. Mcintyre

* * *
Mr. McIntyre was a Civil War veteran having fought for the Union from early 1 862 until the war closed. He joined the Minnesota Regt. at the age of seventeen and was engaged in the war in the South but was returned to Minnesota to fight Indians which were then making war on the white settlers. It was that experience in this war that earned him the name of "Colonel Mack. " He came to
Warren in the year 878, being one of the few men here previous to the entry of the Great Northern Railroad. At that time, he homesteaded on the farm later owned by W.H . Grange and now owned by Isadore Weslowski, located two miles east of Warren. In 1879 his wife, Maggie, whom he married in 1869, came to assist him in building his new home. After two years of farm life, they moved to Warren and opened one of the first hotels in Warren. The Warren House. It was not strictly a hotel but more of a boarding house, with one or two rooms for rent. In 1885 they opened the Windsor Hotel, after spending two years in Montana where Mr. McIntyre held a government position. With meager facilities and a poor building to contend with, they made the Windsor a favorite stopping place for traveling men for thirty-three years until the building was sold to make way for the Warren Hotel building which now stands on the same site.

He was one of the first Marshall County or Polk County citizens to discover the existence of a one and one-half mile strip between Marshall and Polk County and belonging to neither. His energy and work helped to bring that piece of land into Marshall County. The addition of this land made it possible for Warren to be the county seat for it is necessary for the county seat to be located one mile from the county line, if possible.

Mrs. McIntyre died in April, 1922 and Mr. McIntyre passed on in March of 1 925 at the age of eighty-one years.

Enumerated with Frances 33, Fred L. 11, and Lute E. 9.2
Death*9 Jan 1890 Wisconsin; McKee At his home in Kinnickinnic, St. Croix county, Wis., on the 9th day of January 1890, Charles A. McKee aged 53 years. This simple announcement will fall with heaviness upon a large circle of friends and acquantances. Mr. McKee or Charley as his friends loved to call him, was one of nature's noblemen. Never of an aspiring nature, never desirous of supplanting others, he was welcome in every circle of society and his friendship was sought after by all who knew him. Upright in every act, honest to the smallest item, he won the confidence of all with whom he came in contact. His health was always feeble to a degree that forbade his following his chosen trade, that of a miller, although he was engaged in the business for several years and wherever located his mill was popular because of the care taken and honest charges. He was born in Southington,Ohio on the 20th of October 1837. His early life was passed upon a farm. On reachig his majority he turned his attention to the west and soon after in 1859 settled in River Falls, in the immediate vicinity of which he has since that time always lived. On the 22d of October 1865 he wedded Miss Frances Powell, the eldest daughter of Lyman Powell, Esq., and with her has since passed an unusually happy wedded life. Mrs McKee still survives her husband. He leaves two sons Fred and Lute McKee, who have nearly reached their majority. His funeral was attended on Sunday last by a large concourse of friends who gathered to express their sympathy for the bereaved family and their love for the one of whom it may be well said in the words of old "in whom there was no guile" (River Falls Journal 1-16-1890)1

Biography* From History of Steele and Waseca Counties, Minnesota:

Edward Naylor came here with his parents, in the year 1856, from Illinois. Mr. Naylor is a native of Lincolnshire, Eng., where he was born January 6, 1833. He remained at home until he arrived at the age of twenty-four years, when he commenced farming for himself on section 26, Merton Townhip, and has remained there ever since, doing a general farming and stock-raising. In the year 1865 Mr. Naylor enlisted in the First Minnesota Heavy Artillery, and was engaged in service for about nine months. He was discharged October 8, and came back to his farm. On February 20, 1851, he was married to Miss Marion Hunter, a native of Canada. They are the parents of five children: William John and Margaret Elizabeth, (twins), Minnie E., Nettie Marion, and Edwin H., three of whom are living at home. Margaret is at Warren, Marshall County, teaching school. Minnie E., is living at Warren, Marshall County, Minn.; she married Wilber F. Powell, who is engaged in the machinery business. The other children are living at home. Mr. Naylor has been road supervisor and school director. He was elected in 1873 and held the offices several years. He is a Republican in politics, and is a member of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Naylor engages quite extensively in cattle, keeping about one hundred head most of the time. He has a magnificent residence, and out-buildings, the house and barns having a cost of about $7,000. The house is surrounded by a beautiful natural grove of timber. Mr. Naylor's market-place is at Owatonna, while his postoffice is at Rice Lake.2

Mrs. George Hunter

Mrs. George Hunter, 78, one of Steele county's most respected pioneer women, passed away Monday evening after a severe illness of several months. Elizabeth Naylor was born April 23, 1845, in Lincolnshire, England, and came to this country with her parents when six years old. The family resided in Illinois for two years and then moved to Steele county. December 18, 1865, she was married to George Hunter and they moved to a farm in Merton, which had since been Mrs. Hunter's home except for an interval of a few years when she lived in Owatonna. Mr. Hunter died six years ago.

Mrs. Hunter is survived by eight children: George of Froid, Montana; Frank, David and John of Merton; Charles of Owatonna; Mrs. C.O. Mann of Owatonna; Mrs. G.W. Cutshall and Miss Cora Hunter of Rochester. The oldest daughter, Mrs. W. H. Powell of Warren, died four years ago. She also leaves 23 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, besides two brothers, Edward Naylor and A.C. Naylor of Owatonna.

The funeral service was held from the home in Merton yesterday afternoon at one o'clock, Major E.C. Clemans of the Methodist Episcopal church of Owatonna officiating. Interment was made in the Forest Hill cemetery.1,20,21,3

Biography* From History of Blue Earth County (ca. 1909):

NAYLOR, JAMES. - When reflecting upon the agricultural progress of Minnesota Mr. Naylor may well say, "All of which I saw and part of which I was." More than fifty years have come and gone since he arrived in what was then the frontier region of the United States. Indians still molested the white settlers and on more than one occasion he has shouldered his rifle and gone forth to fight the savages. It was during 1856 that he landed in Minnesota and six years later he enlisted as a volunteer in the Union army, being accepted as a private in Company A, Tenth Minnesota Infantry, assigned to the army of the west, and later transferred to the Sixteenth Army Corps, army of the south. His service in the war covered a period of three years and fourteen days and came to an end with the close of the contest, when he was granted an honorable discharge. After he enlisted his first battle was with the Indians at Devil's lake in Minnesota, and later he took part in the battles at Nashville, Tupelo, and other points in the sourth, but sickness forced him to remain in a hospital at Memphis for six months and in the battles of that period he had no part. As a soldier he proved efficient, courageous and quick to grasp military tactics, and he served his adopted country faithfully and well.

Born in Lincolnshire, England, October 31, 1842, James Naylor is a son of John and Elizabeth (Rux) Naylor natives of the same shire as himself and emigrants therefrom to America during the year 1850. Their first location was on a tract of land in Cook county, Illinois, near Chicago. During 1856 they brought their children to Minnesota and took up a claim in Steele county, where afterward they engaged in developing and improving a farm. On that place the wife and mother died in 1899 and the father in 1903. They were parents of eight children, namely: John, Edward, George, Mary, James, Elizabeth, William and Arthur. When the family came to the United States James was about eight years old and he was fourteen at the time of arriving in Minnesota, where he has since made his home.

The marriage of James Naylor took place August 7, 1867, and united him with Carrie Burgess, daughter of Joshua Burgess, a native of Massachusetts and a pioneer of Blue Earth county, Minnesota, where he followed the trade of a carpenter. On account of the failure of his health he went west and traveled in the hope that he might be benefited by the change, but the hope proved futile and he died while stopping in Salt Lake City. Mr. and Mrs. Naylor have three children. The eldest child, Herbert, married Myrtle Remick and makes his home in Minneapolis, where he is employed as a bridge carpenter. The second son, E.J., who married Alice Croswell, now has charge of the home farm. The only daughter, Myrtle, was educated in the Mankato State Normal and now is engaged in teaching school in North Dakota.4
