Residence*1870 River Falls, Pierce Co., Wisconsin; Age 21, school teacher, born in New York1
Marriage*30 Nov 1871 Principal=Allen Palmer Weld2
Death*Jan 1924 Rock Elm, Pierce Co., Wisconsin; Alice Powell was born in Madrid, N.Y. June 24, 1839. She lived there until the fall of 1855, when her father brought his family to River Falls and located on a farm in the South Fork district. She received her education here, attending the old Institute and the Academy. At an early age she began teaching and continued until the fall of 1871, when, on November 30, she was married in this in this city to Mr. Allen Palmer Weld.

Practically all of the fifty-three years of her married life were spent not only in River Falls, but in the old home, which has been in the family for sixty-six years.

Aside from her daughter Laura, of this city, and son Lyman and family of Denver. Colorado, she's survived by three sisters, Mrs. Ida A. Gould, of Tuscon, Arizona; Mrs. Nathan P Stone, of Crookston, Minnesota; Mrs. Harriet P. Ensign of this city and one brother Wilbur F Powell of Warren, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held in the Congregational church on Friday, Jan. 25, Dr. J. O. Thursh officiating.Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery.

Among the relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funereal were Lyman P Weld and wife, of Denver; Mrs. N.P. Stone, Crookston,Minn.; Wilbur F. Powell, Warren,Minn; Miss Ida Johnston and Mrs. Perry ApRoberts,Hudson, Wis., Miss Augusta Willett, St.Paul, Minn.; and Mr.and Mrs. Henry Walker, Eau Claire, Wis.

The death of Mrs. Weld brings a loss which will be felt, not alone in the home and community, but which will reach out to many unexpected corners of our land where dwell those who were privileged to call her friend. For Mrs. Weld was preeminently a home maker for her family first, and then for any homeless one who needed mothering. Many are the on time strangers in River falls especially among the teachers and students, who have found an antidote for that homesick feeling, in the white house on the corner.

Mrs. Weld was also interested in the making of the community, taking an active part in such organizations as the Tuesday Club, of which she was a charter member, the Women's Improvement League and the Women's Relief Corps.

Her interest in church work began in girlhood when at about fourteen years of age, she joined the Congregational Church and began her work in the Sunday School. This roved, indeed, to be a life work as she remained an active member of the Sunday School until within a few weeks of her death.

Her loyalty to all good causes, her devotion to duty, her cordial hospitality and her faithful friendship will ever remain an inspiration and a blessing to all who knew her. River Falls Journal 1-31-19242

Maj. George N. Powell Dies in Southwest Pacific

Maj George N. (Bud) Powell, widely known Fargoan, died in the Southwest Pacific, according to word received Monday by Mrs. Powell from the adjutant general. No details were given in the message.

Major Powell had been out in the Pacific since the first of this year, and was in New Guinea when last heard from.

A veteran of World war 1, from which he emerged as a captain in the airforce, he went back into the service in July, 1940, when he was again commissioned a captain. He was located at Tampa, Fla., for some time directing important air force operations there; served fora period in London as military attache to the American embassy, and drew the Southwest Pacific assignment at the turn of this year.

Major Powell, who was with the W.J. Lane company, in Fargo for a number of years was active here in the period that marked the city's development as an air traffic center.

An active Legionnaire, Major Powell had served about 10 years as adjutant of the Gilbert C. Grafton post in Fargo. He had been a member of the post since it was orgnanized.

Major Powell was the first of the 27 members of the Gilbert C. Grafton post now in service to be a casualty.

Major Powell was born at Warren, Minn., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.N. Powell. He enlisted from Fargo in the first war.

He is survived by Mrs. Powell, the former Anna Shaw of Warren, and by five children: Lieut. John W. stationed at Patterson Field, Fairfield, Ohio; George, an air cadet at Columbia, Mo.; Mrs. W.L. Larson, whose lieutenant husband is stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Donald and William, residing at home, 403 Eighth av S.

There is also a surviving brother, Allen Powell of Missoula. Mont., and two sisters, Mrs. Mark Millspaugh, Arcadia, Calif., and Mrs. Gust Grunert, Northfield, Minn.

Obituary published in the Pierce Co. Herald:

Lyman N. Powell departed this life at his residence in this village on Saturday of last week, at eight o'clock in the morning. He was in his fifty-first year. Never has it been our lot to record the death of a friend or neighbor when we were more deeply impressed with the importance of the even, or of our own inability to subjoin a suitable notice. But he has gone. For more than half a century he has meet and brooked the ills of life. His noble mainly form which has moved a meekness before us for years will be seen no more except in fancy. We miss him as a friend, but this is not the dearest relation in human life. The silken cords of union have been broken - a tender father has gone to his reward. Nor is this all. The public has lost a useful citizen, whose name has been identified with every worthy enterprise in the history of this place. An more For Fourteen consecutive years he has stood before the children as a Sabbath School Superintendent. And among them none knew him but to love him. Oft have we seen him at this accustomed place before the alter. Love sat up on his countenance and scattered delight through the sometimes impatient throng. Then anon that little bell would ring a joyful quiet peal, and all was still. His word was law to them - his wish was joy.
As a christian he lived - as a christian he died. Christian graces adorned a noble nature. But, what thought the arm of conquering death hath invaded the house of God? What though our teacher and our friend is numbered with dead? What though the once watchful eye he closed in darkness and the once instructive tongue be silent? Doth not his spirit sill walk in our midst, its teaching to impart? Yes, verily and that soul once sympathetic and fervent with fresh and glowing impulse, now back to cheer and guide those it has left behind.
But we forbear. The hand that writes the e-lines will crumble into dust, long before his noble life will be forgotten. He was kindly endeared to all who knew him. He has gone to the land.
"Where those who weep shall never part,
The lives of saints to scan;
And God uniting every heart,
Dwells fate to face with man."

Biography* From the History of the St. Croix Valley:

POWELL, Nathaniel N, the eldest of the three Powell brothers, was born at Madrid, St. Lawrence county, N.Y., on May 11, 1826. His parents were William Powell and Lucy Newell Powell, both of American birth and descending from good Puritan stock. His paternal ancestors came to America in 1730, those on his mother's side in 1640. Both of his grandfathers served in the Revolutionary War. His early life was spent in St. Lawrence County, where he received a good common school education, supplemented by some higher training. After completion his course of study, he taught school for several seasons. Becoming interested, from glowing reports of the west, in the great possibilities for young men in that newly opened country, about the year 1850 he emigrated to Wisconsin, settling in the town of River Falls, and for a short time engaged in farming. Finding an opportunity to enter into the mercantile business, he opened a store in the building owned by himself and his brothers, known for many years as the Pioneer store. This building was situated at the corner of Main and Maple streets, in River Falls, and was used as a store building for several years. In 1852 Mr. Powell married Martha Ann Hart, and by her had four children, two of whom died in childhood, the others, Eva L. and Winthrop N., surviving him. In politics Mr. Powell was a Republican, believing in the expression of opinion. He united with the Congregational church at the age of sixteen years, and was one of the earlier members of the church established at River Falls. Through his whole life, from the time he professed his belief in truth, he was a consistent Christian, and one who commanded the respect and love of his fellow men. He died at his home in River Falls on February 7, 1862. A modest monument in the Greenwood cemetery marks the last resting-place of a faithful and kind father, a patriotic citizen and an earnest and consistent Christian. The History Behind The Falls - River Falls (River Falls Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureal website at http://www.rfchamber.com/history.htm (3/30/08):
Two brothers, Nathaniel N. and Oliver Stanley Powell, also claimed land in 1849. They built the first commercial structure in 1852. Two years later the building was converted into a store known as Pioneer Store. It was located at the corner of main and Maple streets and rapidly developed into a hotel, post office, and community headquarters. Stock for the store was unloaded at Prescott and hauled in by horse and wagon.
In 1854, the Powell brothers laid out and platted the first section in the village - 60 acres on the east side of town they named the Village of Kinnickinnic. They were later said to be instrumental in convincing state officials to establish the 4th state normal school in River Falls.

Powell, the second son, born May 11, 1827, in St. Lawrence county, New York, came to River Falls in 1849, and pre-empted the northeast quarter of section 1, now a part of the site of River Falls city. He was married to Martha Ann Hart, Sept. 28, 1842 (sic), at Hudson. He died at River Falls, Sept. 28 (sic), 1862, leaving one son and one daughter.2,3

DIED.

At his residence in River Falls Feb 7th 1862, of consumption, Nathanial N. Powell, aged 34 years and 9 months.

[The deceased was one of the oldest settlers and leading business men in the St. Croix Valley. He located on the Kinnickinnic in 1850. some years afterwards he laid out the village of River Falls. He has always done a varied and extensive business, contributing greatly to the present prosperity of Pierce and St. Croix Counties. His life as a citizen and a christian has been almost above reproach, and his death is a public calamity. He leaves a wife and two small children, together with a large circle of relatives and acquaintances to mourn his loss.]

Obituary appearing in the Prescott Journal on 12 Feb 1862:

DIED

At his residence in River Falls, Wis., Friday, Feb. 7th, of consumption, NATHANIAL N. POWELL, aged 34 years and 9 months.

The deceased was one of the first pioneers in the north-west. He removed from his native place, Madrid, St. Lawrence county, N.Y., to St. Anthony Falls, MN in 1849, where he resided about a year. In the fall of 1850 he located on the Kinnickinnic, where now stands the village of River Falls. From the time of his first settlement there, he was untiring in his efforts to build up and contribute to the wealth of the county. To his great business ability and integrity is owing, in great measure, the present prosperity of the village where he lived.

The early death of Mr. POWELL may justly be regarded as a public calamity. As a business man, he possessed the most undoubted integrity; as a citizen, his character was above reproach; and as a Christian, his life was consistent and blameless. His daily life attested his many virtues. He was a bright example of moral rectitude and christian piety. Truly, a noble life is ended - a christian light has gone out - a good man has fallen. Almost any man in the community could have been more easily spared. In his energy as a business man, his life as a citizen, and his example as a christian, the world, the community, and the Church have suffered an irreparable loss. A devoted wife and two small children, together with a large circle of relatives, are in deep grief.

A community is in mourning. As we weave the cypress for the bier of the departed, and pay this final tribute to the deceased, let us forget his few erorrs, and emulate his many virtues. The cup of life is drained, the golden bowl is broken. Our friend has "gone to his reward," in the full flush of life and the pride of manhood. "Heaven is his home."1,2,6,7

Biography* From History of the St. Croix Valley, published in 1909

POWELL, Oliver S. (and NICHOLS family) was born June 19, 1831, in Madrid, N. Y., and moved to Augusta, Ill., in 1843, where he lived eight years. His education was obtained in the district schools. In 1849 he went to Stillwater, Minn., bringing the first threshing machine north of Prairie du Chien. He threshed the first grain in the county in the fall of that year for Mr. Fisk on a farm three miles below Stillwater. In November, 1849, he located in River Falls, pre-empting the south half of the southeast quarter of section 36, town 28, range 19, land lying north of those claimed by his brother Nathaniel, and which afterward became a part of the city of River Falls. In 1852 these brothers built the first sawmill, which was situated just below the Greenwood mill. This was burned in 1876. In 1854 the village, called at that time Kinnickinnic, was platted by the Powell brothers, 200 acres being included in the tract. This plat included the upper waterfalls, which are in the city limits, and were donated to C. B. Cox to induce him to put a flouring mill on that site. The name River Falls dates from the establishment of the first postoffice, in 1854. The first frame building in River Falls was built in 1852, by N. N. and O. L. Powell, and was used two years for a dwelling, and afterwards converted into what was known as the "Old Pioneer Store." "Uncle Charlie Cox" and Osburn Strahl got the lumber out for it, and it was sawed at Mr. Cox's mill, just built in Clifton Hollow. Deacon William Powell and Horace Taylor drew the lumber with ox teams. Nathaniel Powell died February 7, 1862, before the place had much of a start. This left Oliver, the younger brother, alone in charge of the principal affairs of the firm, and as subsequent years proved, he was an important factor in the building up of the place, and the general development of the country round about. Overflowing with energy and good will, he was the head man of the neighborhood. Mr. Powell was a representative in the state assembly in 1870-71-72, and in connection with Prof. A. H. Weld, father of Judge Weld, was largely instrumental in locating the fourth State Normal school here. As a neighbor Mr. Powell was obliging and sympathetic, always rejoicing in the prosperity of his neighbors. He had a helping hand for all. It was natural for him to be on the right side of things. In his convictions he was abiding, sometimes intense, but too broad and liberal to be a crank. His understanding of human nature was unusual, and when he chose to exert his influence, he was a power. His public spirit was his pre-eminent quality. Whenever there was an enterprise afloat looking toward the material or moral good of the place, he never was too busy or too tired to help. With ready hand, open pocket, and dauntless eye, he was ever in the forefront of the effort; and when his useful career was cut short in his cane mill, September 26, 1888, it was a loss. His place has never been filled. Mr. Powell married L. Elmira Nichols, of River Falls, Wis., September 23, 1860. Mrs. Powell was born in Braintree, Vt., January 6, 1841. In 1846 her parents moved to Illinois, and in 1854 came to River Falls. Her education was obtained in the public schools and the historic "Old Academy." From Fifty Years in the Northwest by W.H.C. Folsum, first pubished in 1888:

Oliver S. Powell, thhe youngest son, was born June 19, 1831, and came to Hancock county, Illinois, in 1843, where he lived eight years. He had no great opportunities for gaining an education. He came to Stillwater in 1849, bring with him the first threshing machine north of Prairie du Chien. He threshed the first grain threshed in the county in the fall of that year, for Fiske, on a farm three miles below Stillwater. In November, 1849, he located in River Falls, pre-empting the south half of the southeast quarter of section 36, town 28, range 19, lands lying just north of those claimed by his brother, and which afterward became a part of River Falls. Mr. Powell was a representative in the state assembly in 1870-71-72, and was a county commissioner many years. He was married in 1860 to Elmira Nichols. They have three sons, Harvey C., Newell N. and Lyman T., and four daughters, Lucy M. Sarah H., Amy E., and Miriam.

POWELL (Deacon William) The family is of Welsh descent. The first one coming to this county in 1730. The first family motto was "Better death than dishonor." The Powells were at first Ap Howell, the prefix signifying "son of." They had a crest and coat of arms, and their motto later was, "Fame Survives Fortune." Deacon William Powell, father of the three brothers living in River Falls, was born July 8, 1784, in Charlotte, Vt. He was married to Lucy Newell, of Charlotte, Vt., in March 1804, and moved to Madrid, N.Y., where he lived many years. He was a very active, enterprising gentleman, and took an interest in all that would improve the community in which he lived. He was a member of the Congregational church from early manhood. Mrs. Powell died in March 1843, and he was afterward married to Mrs. Ora Taylor, mother of Mrs. Lyman Powell and Lute and H. A. Taylor, the well-known journalists. In 1849 Mr. Powell came to River Falls, Wis., with his sons Nathaniel and Oliver. He was possessed of great will power, being determined to finish every undertaking which he commenced. At that time the transportation, which was by boat up and down the Mississippi, was very uncertain, and finding he was too late for the last boat of the season, with his son Oliver he made the trip from Prescott, Wis., to Keokuk, Ia., in a skiff. Mr. Powell died November 30, 1865, in River Falls, Wis. Reference: Taken from "History of the St. Croix Valley", published in 1909
